As you mentioned, recording voice can definitely be effective for correcting as well as understanding our mistakes. When I listen to my voice, I understand that sometimes I use fillers a lot or I speak too slowly.

Absolutely! Listening to yourself can be a bit embarrassing sometimes (I don’t really like watching my own videos haha) but it’s necessary to see your own performance and how you can do better.

Hi Lucien! First of all, thank you for the valuable information. Greatly appreciated. A question towards filler words. What I do is to incorporate a pause (half a second) to structure my response instead of using „ums“ etc. However, everytime I get scolded by the TOEFL E-Rater on the official website because of this circumstance. The detailed insights section states, that I am not fluent in my response. At least, this is what the E-Rater says. So, I am curious how it will be on test day in 17 days. I am confident with the templates and the structure of my response, but I start getting a little nervous about the E-Rater. If I may, could you provide me any advice? Kind regards, Pascal

Hi Pascal, you shouldn’t worry TOO much about filler words or pauses but at the same time the best way of reducing them is to just keep practising and see if you can find a friend to act as an audience for you and give you timed conditions. It’s such a cliche but practice really does make perfect. Best of luck on your test!
