Two things to watch out for if you are replacing the head gasket on a 4 cylinder Tacoma (mine is the 3RZ-FE engine).

There is no escape, DIY is full of pitfalls but that is how we learn and laugh at the end. Thumbs up to the helper

Set the head onto the block with no gasket, then lift it high enough to slide the head gasket in place and then re-lower the head. Works best with a cherry picker... helps prevent accidents when you initially trying to fit the head into place and damage to the gasket.

Can't really do this if you have studded the block. Enticing a helper with beer and pizza is the next best thing to an engine stand.

TheMrkaninja normally you then thread the studs in after setting the head in place on the dowels... especially if doing a head gasket in frame, all my experience is diesel so little different world but you don’t get enough clearance to set a head in place with studs installed first

The fact that your corner bulb cover is grey instead of yellow is bothering me. But props on getting the engine out back together 👍

When you removing the timing gear off the cam and rest it on the tensioner are you concerned that it will slack on crank gear and be off by a tooth?
@WhatDennisDoes
@WhatDennisDoes 4 жыл бұрын
That was a concern, and in fact I had the gear zip tied to the chain and held up in the air with a bungee cord while I worked on the head for that very reason. However I haven't found any reference of it being a problem. I was careful when I rested it on the tensioner to take slack out of the chain. It didn't stay like that long. One more thing - this is really a two man job. It's just awkward and you need two sets of hands when removing and replacing the head.

what tool are you using to turn the gear at the beginning?

Hey Dennis I love the video, I'm doing the same thing on mine but the service bolt won't go thru both gears, the first one looks off a tooth, also I was told the HG was done on my truck a yrs before I bought it so I'm thinking they didn't do it correctly, any advice?

Did you have the head decked? (machined) The 3RZ engine is a great engine, very dependable and reliable little engine. Hope it’s running well. 👍

Nope, I used sandpaper. The whole thing was a complete DIY job. Check out my other videos if you're interested. It's been over a year and I'm still driving it to work every day. Honestly was only trying to get another 6 months out of it but like you said the 3RZ is solid.

Ok so this is going to be my first time doing anything like this but I want to try. My question is this. Is the service bolt already installed and just needs to be tightened? If not, where do I find one?
@WhatDennisDoes
@WhatDennisDoes 4 жыл бұрын
There's no service bolt, you gotta provide one yourself. In a pinch you can use one off the truck, I think the valve cover bolts are the right size. But it's better to use a new one from the store because it will be clean.

What Dennis Does do you know if there is a tool made specifically for these types of gears
@WhatDennisDoes
@WhatDennisDoes 5 жыл бұрын
@@lucasjohnson5 Google "universal cam gear holder". I don't know if there's a specific tool from Toyota but I think one of those universal tools should work
@coleadero39
@coleadero39 Жыл бұрын
You don't need the tool if you use the service bolt before removing both cam shafts, just set the iming pulley on a cero degrees and you should ok.
