I often feel this is a parody of motorhome/van life. Who wears a straw hat to Lapland and "stocks up on snack foods"?! Janine constantly wears her ‘big’ coat even in a supposedly warm car and I doubt she’ll cope in the Arctic circle if she thinks the UK is cold….

Every Canadian has a 'go bag' in the trunk (or boot to you Brits) for winter driving. It usually contains a first aid kit, windshield wiper fluid, fuel line antifreeze, ice scraper, booster cable, small folding shovel, reflective vest, survivor candle with matches (provides warmth if you get stranded and lose power - also don't run your diesel heater/engine if car is buried in snow!), traction mats if you get stuck, a heat reflective thermal blanket, some food and water. Main thing to remember.....be aware of icy roads; if you hit black ice don't panic - don't slam the brakes, that just makes it worse. Otherwise, I'm sure you'll be fine! I lived in NWT where we got -40C with a -50 windchill. Main thing - wrap up your face and make sure you have something covering your mouth so you don't freeze your lungs. ;)

Check your hydraulic fluids! The coldest weather I have experienced was on a skiing trip in the Alps, about 30 years ago, during a particularly cold snap. The outdoor temperature went to colder than -25°C. The hydraulic fluid in our bus froze, or at least became very thick - like your solid olive oil. The brakes “failed on” and our bus shuddered to a halt and all the hydraulically controlled doors flew open! Fortunately for us there were two crucial people on the bus: - a bus mechanic who knew his way around the systems of our bus - a heavy drinker who had stocked up on vodka on the way through duty free Our bus mechanic used the vodka as an expensive anti-freeze additive to the various hydraulic fluids. It was enough to get the brakes off and to get the doors to close while we edged our way to the next service station. So check that your brake fluid and any other hydraulic fluids are the low temperature type or have been sufficiently doped with a suitable anti-freeze.
@QB2ERS
@QB2ERS 7 күн бұрын
Brake hydraulic fluid is hydroscopic, so unless renewed now and then can maybe absorb enough water to become slush in sub zero temps.

Janine I was thinking about you, I hope you've had a go at driving that vehicle and know all the things you need to know ,as in anything happens to Liam like flu, broken arm etc. you have to be able to take over. I'm only thinking this because I don't like driving in France, my partner does it all, including cleaning n lighting the log fire. which is very stupid of me as I would have to take over,but I'm not in the wilds of Lapland. Anyway I don't want to spoil your adventure, I just hope you are prepared for any eventuality, but I'm sure you are. Take lots of care both of you and have lots of fun ❤❤❤❤

Back in ‘50’s and ‘60’s taking your empty pop bottles back to the shop you got some money back, and as for milk. Well, you would wash your empty bottles, put them outside the front door and the milkman would collect them and then replace them with full bottles of milk. Those were the days!😀😀😀

@ I also remember the Corona pop lorry coming round and one penny chews and all those gloriously wonderful sweets that came in little paper bags. I had to laugh at the mash potato pot and Liam talking about one moment it was powder and the next it was mash. I remember instant mash potato either made from powder or granules. So, yes, I am old in years but still a child in my head and there is nothing wrong in that.

I lived near a small dairy growing up in the 60's... The milk was in bottles and delivered to the door by horse and cart early in the morning.. You could hear and see the empty bottles rattling along on a conveyor belt on metal rollers, as they went through the washing process, from the gate of the dairy.. and the hooter for the workers to start work, break for lunch, and finish work in the evening, could be heard all over the district and was the ' clock' for everyone in the area! As kids who loved horses, if you got up early and went to the beautifully kept stable yard, the milkman would let you help with the horse backing the milk cart into it's parking space under cover and undo the traces and lead the horse into the stable block to his stable .. there was a big farrier shed and the farrier would let you sit on an upturned bucket at the door and watch him shoe the horses... I loved the smell and sound of his hammering and sight of the hot shoes coming out of the fire.. The dairy owner was very good to the horses, they were well cared for and rotated ' holidays' in the fields he had beside the small dairy.. One day someone broke in in the night and let all the horses out of their stalls and all us kids helped search for them around the roads. Fortunately all were found and none were injured. The dairy owner told us kids to come back a few days later at a certain time and when we did he gave us each a photo of his winner of the best horse and cart from the big national show and some sweets and fizzy drinks.. We felt super important! The dairy and the horses are now long gone, along with the hooter... Only the little shop the dairy had, now a small local shop, and the football club the dairy owner started for the dairy workers remain... the rest of the land all built over with houses and a road running through... But the great memories - and the photograph of his prizewinning horse and cart - 😊remain and are still with me! 🥰

I’m so pleased you’re getting that pre heater fixed, I was worried about that. When we went to Sweden we drove in on a Saturday night, exhausted, went to the BnB we were staying at, ate the few things we had in the car for tea and on Sunday morning walked the 100/150mts to the Aldi a few doors down. It was closed, the whole town closed on Sunday, we couldn’t find food or drinks anywhere. Someone finally told us about the “old town” where there were a few cafes open. So weird but so pretty. Oh guys now so very real, I’m so excited but again so scared. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. See you next week, I can’t wait. 🥰

I even once declined a lovely invitation to Lapland in the summer, because living in Belgium, I find that the summer months here have the only bearable climate! So thumbs up for the both of you for getting so far out of your comfort zone and not letting yourselves discourage by some of the paternalistic comments, no doubt with good intentions but it's nevertheless a bit dumb to insinuate that 2 experienced travellers aren't capable to adjust their clothes when feeling cold or haven't got a plan B. @ Well my niece is just over 6”1 but until her we are all quite average height really. I’m 5’6 and my sisters are around the same. So it’s missed a couple of generations for defo. Anyway hope you’re staying warm guys. It’s cold enough here now so I can only imagine what it’s like where you two are. Wrap up warm! Big hugs 🤗

Janine really ought to take her coat off in the vehicle, otherwise she'll not feel the benefit of her coat, because its going to be so much colder than you can imagine. Also not a good idea to let your diesel run out for your heater, and possibly keep a spare tank. Please start wearing more layers. You need to really take stock of what you have and do not have. Proper first aid kit, wool socks, extra water/ fuel, etc.

It's a shame everything is such a steep learning curve everyday. Surely, a little bit more research and spending time thinking and planning wouldn't go amiss? Plus, as others have mentioned, you need to wear far more thin layers made of natural fibres that wick away moisture from your skin than just one or two thick bulky layers. Perhaps check out some mountaineering or arctic camping/survival vlogs for tips on how to prepare and what to wear?

You can leave the truma on 40° water only, won't dump then,but anyway at very low temperatures if the heater is left off all your victuals will likely freeze plus your water even inside the unit.

So nice that you stayed for a while in my city Halmstad. Imagine if we had bumped into each other on the street. But I don't understand why you choose to drive through Norway to get to Finland. It takes much longer and is significantly more expensive. Drive along the coast in Sweden instead. The roads are good and free to drive on. Much cheaper food and diesel.

Good to see you are having fun. In Norway you can get the mash you had but it comes in packets- some you add millk, others it comes with. I like this as a quick warm up with dried fried onions. Some other typical foods you might be interested in - Flatbread - often had with the kind of hash you had. Waffles - who doesn't love a waffle. Red cabbage - which can be bought in boil in the bag servings, as can swede. At christmas - julegrøt (christmas porridge) and multekrem (to die for) are worth trying, as typical treats- if, of course, your diet permits. Tofu is about £8 for a slab in supermarkets but often if you find a small international shop it (and other veg) is cheaper. Can't wait to see your next upload.

What are you, the man police? You don’t actually know what Janine does. I believe she does a lot of the filming and all the editing, it’s a huge amount of work, and it’s what keeps people watching this excellent Vlog. Also, asking her to stay awake when Liam does is not sensible advice from a safety point of view. It’s better that at one person is well rested, in case emergency situations arise. Then at least one person has a clear head, rather than both being sleep deprived .

You guys need to start using Google translate. You just put it on your phone, then you point the camera at anything and it will tell you what it says in English, changing in real time as you point at different things. No more mystery about mashed potato pots or what Norwegian ferry doors say. I was just in Japan and it was so useful, we could look at all the food in the brilliant convenience stores and work out exactly what it was. So we never had to eat cow tongue or chicken gizzard LOL.

I've just watched the video and I think it was brilliant. They are doing something they've always wanted to and for all those watching and making negative comments, just remember they have chosen to take us along so if you can't say anything nice then just shut up and say nothing. Remember negative comments can have a detrimental effect on people and if enough is said they may stop making videos and quit vlogging their adventures. To the person who commented on Janine staying awake, why say things like that? If someone is tired then they should just sleep and not feel bad about it. The bottom line is if it's negative just say nothing
@AnneRogersPhoto
@AnneRogersPhoto 5 күн бұрын
Most (not all 🙄) of the negative comments are not from people being spiteful but from those who are genuinely concerned that L&J aren't properly prepared, and are worried for their safety. Given their frequent refusal to listen to people who have done this type of travelling before, and also ignoring people who actually LIVE in the regions they're proposing to go to, or just brushing off their helpful comments and suggestions, it doesn't seem unreasonable that people are concerned. There are negative comments which are just people being horrible and I agree that the posters of them should just shut up, but there are also those comments which are trying to help L&J avoid getting into what could be a life-threatening disastrous situation.
