As a HKer, To be fair, the HK Bus driver didn't scam you, its common local knowledge you can always pay extra but Buses don't give out changes. Every place has its own set of rules and custom, HK & Mainland, although both are part of China but operation by own set of rules. Yes it take som adjusting to, but its quite normal when you think about it, one is a former British colony still following Commonwealth set of rules, one is a Socialist country.

That would have happened in Canada too. In Toronto, the buses don't make change. If all you have is a $20 bill, then that's what you pay for the $3.40 fare.

Try not to be too obsessed with the possibility of being scammed. It happens everywhere. I live in Canada and have a Canadian accent but have been scammed a number of times. I was scammed by a number of movers -- an Indian, two black guys, a Russian, a Belarusian and other Eastern Europeans. Once by a Japanese woman who owns a booth selling knickknacks. Another time by a white fellow at a trade show. It doesn't feel good, but it's part of life.

While the bus system not giving changes is not a scam, but definitely abuse of its monopoly power. OMG, in Canada, taxis make change but our public buses don't. The drivers of buses don't carry around change. It's not part of their duties to handle the fares. The onus is on the passenger to have the right fare. What do you want from the bus driver? Do you want him to let you on for free? If he does that, other passengers will do the same thing to get away with not paying fares. And no, it's not a scam. I have no idea why the vloggers say that they were scammed by the bus driver. I noticed that in several videos, they believed that they got scammed, and it didn't appear that way to me. They seem obsessed, and so I just wanted to let them know that they shouldn't be so paranoid. It's not a big deal too if it's a small amount.

Many years ago, I took a bus in mainland China, and the same thing happened to me. The bus driver would help me collect the fare from the passengers who got on the bus behind me until he made up for my change. The services in all walks of life in mainland China make you feel more humane, and everyone will take care of his customers when encountering problems, even if there is no obligation for him to do so.

The last thing that you need to worry about is going from Shenzhen to Hong Kong then to HK airport. There are many options. If it is over crowded once you cross the land border, the easiest way is to hop on a taxi. It will take you around HKD 300 but it will ensure you to get there on time. Don't take public transportation if you are under a tight schedule. For money, you can exchange RMB to HKD at some small exchange offices either on mainland side or Hong Kong side.

You did not get scammed by the bus driver. In Hong Kong you must pay the exact change when you take the bus. Most people in HK use the Octopus prepaid cards HK Alipay where they deduct from the card. Once your card runs low you can top up at any convenience store or at any train / metro station unless your card is linked to a credit card. Just wanted to make it clear you did not get scammed. You were just unlucky you didn’t know how things worked in Hong Kong but I can understand your frustration especially when you need to catch a flight. Hope that doesn’t deter you from visiting Hong Kong in the near future as Hong Kong is a beautiful International city.

As a local, you should ask us. usually we took the MPV car from Shenzhen to HK airport directly, the car just cross the bridge between Shenzhen and Hongkong, It takes less 1.5 hours from Shenzhen bay to HK airport. another way is taking boat from Shenzhen shekou ferry to HK airport directly. BTW. when you go to the scenic spots of Sanya Hainan province, be careful to these scammers, usually we don't have scammers in mainland China. but Sanya is a little bit different. especially when you eat the seafood, the price may be pretty high than your expectation.

What you should have done was to walk over to HK from Futian to the corresponding Lok Ma Chau Station in HK. Then get out station, and hail a cab for Tsing YI Airport Express Station and take the airport express to the airport. If you want to splurge, take it all the way to the airport. Golden Week Travel (especially if you are foreigner) expects lots of delay. Like yyou said, better avoid it.

Hey, the gates in HONG KONG MTR stations accepts Visa card and Alipay actually you don’t need to buy tickets from ticket machine. The bus in Hong Kong also equipped with Visa card reader

I also went to HK from Shenzhen on the Golden Week in China and book my ticket from trip like 1 or 2 days before and get instant confirmation. I think "real" reservation is 7 days before. Lots of chaos indeed but, yeah I just change some cash before at Shenzhen before taking my train. They don't seems to use a lot Alipay there and i also tried to activate Alipay but it seems that it doesn't working well. Queing for 20-30 for the octopus pass or something like that to have unlimited public transport for 1 day. Conclusion : really need to avoid golden week in China since Chinese has these 2 weeks off, 1.5 billions people is very vey huge (one in chinese new year and the second from 1st october which his national day to 6-7 october).

Hong Kong’s laws are very sound and drivers will not dare to lie to you. The Hong Kong bus driver didn't have a door to open the box, it was company policy. But he didn't know that the box couldn't accept cash, which was puzzling. It doesn’t matter if it’s 100 Hong Kong dollars or not.Just think of it as a life experience. Don't take it to heart.

You should goto Lo Wu port to Hong Kong , less people at Lo Wu port，no queuing. And you can take the metro at Lo Wu to the Hong Kong airport, change lines 3 times. Another way is to take a fast ferry from Shenzhen to the Hong Kong airport.

As a HK local, It's really strange that trip messed up your tickets, the tickets should have been confirmed as soon as you have bought them. Would have been a breeze indeed to take the train to HK and then transfer to the airport express to hk airport. Def got some bad luck travelling in the busiest time, the HK public transport system is very reliant on the Octopus card to travel around. Yeah no change for cash is the default for everything except ticket machines.

As a regular visitor to Hong Kong I feel much of your drama was due to lack of preparation. Its easy to get an Octopus card amd then no need for waiting at ticket machines or having correct change. Octopus cards can even be used to pay for things in many shops and eateries in Hong Kong. Btw, I have been in HK during Golden Week and CNY and have never experienced the issues that you did. Yes its a lot more busy but as with any travel preparation is key.

I've been there during Golden Week and CNY, two of the busiest times to visit. The crowds are to be expected at those times. In Hong Kong, the handiest item to have is an Octopus card, which is available as a digital download for iPhone users (even visitors).

You are in luck. As a Japanese person, I visited China during the Chinese New Year and it was hell. I visited the world heritage site of Huangshan and was stuck on the side of a cliff and stood there for 3 hours. Some people who had reached their limit of patience started rock climbing and went over my feet, which was almost like suicide. I definitely recommend you to avoid China's long holidays when traveling.😂

While the train cancellation issue was out of your control some things were such as not doing your research about payment options in HK and paying bus drivers with exact amount particularly when you didn't have internet or an Octopus card and especially during golden week. You should probably add some subtitles in to say the bus driver wasn't scamming you. Hectic travel days are no fun but you look back now and laugh how crazy it was. If the same situation happened to me in Shenzhen, I would go directly to Shekou Port and take a one-hour boat ride directly to Hong Kong Airport, or go to the West Port and take a bus directly to Hong Kong airport. Haha unfortunately mate, we had to reset the visa - nothing was cheaper. This was the most expensive way to travel, but you get a 30 day visa exemption when coming from OUTSIDE of China and only a handful of countries fly to Hainan directly - one of them being HK so yeah! Golden Week though 😂👏🏻

I wouldn't call that a scam, more of an inconvenience. You can't expect everywhere to have change. I would carry change around just in case for this very reason. That's why I never use cash anymore. I hate cash, it's so inconvenient. Hong Kong back in the day use to be better than China. But now it's reversed. Mainland China is better than Hong Kong. Hopefully, over time HK will become more like the mainland.

The bus driver didn't scam you because he couldn't get the money in the box. When you showed the 100 dollar note to the driver, he expected you to ask other passengers for change before putting the bus fare in the box.

Bro. No public transport system in the world gives you change I'm sure... If it does I'm sure it's a rarity... I'd be a bit cautious about making such an assertion as it really brings out unfounded negative connotations (as a content influencer you'll know this is quite dangerous and not good for your channel either) and it's just quite lucky that everyone in the comments section have sense enough to correct you.

Hong Kong is an ex-British colony so it is more backward and unsafe and stuck up. Of course, Hong Kong can also be a vibrant city and it has delicious food but it is now lagging behind China in many ways.

Another great video Pat and Giulia. I've been waiting for you to get to HK. As mentioned in many posts here, exchange your RMB for $HK, as you did, and buy two Octopus cards. On the Honkers side just load it up at a MTR machine and use the card like an Oyster card. Bonus, you can use it to buy food, buses, the train and seven eleven. You'll get no change to worry about and life will be easier. You're possibly home in Fulham now so maybe for next time. It's also a shame you didn't get the time to explore. HK is a high trust territory, unlike the UK today. People do miss us running the show there, especially the oldies. You missed Macau too. That's on another level and is reached by bus or boat from HK. I could go on ...

As a HKer, To be fair, the HK Bus driver didn't scam you, its common local knowledge you can always pay extra but Buses don't give out changes. Every place has its own set of rules and custom, HK & Mainland, although both are part of China but operation by own set of rules. Yes it take som adjusting to, but its quite normal when you think about it, one is a former British colony still following Commonwealth set of rules, one is a Socialist country.
