CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason) welcomes the Breakfast Club to detention, but is insulted by Bender (Judd Nelson).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

It just dawned on me that the seating arrangements are a reflection on where the five characters are in the social hierarchy. Brian sits at a desk alone because he is the Geek, Allison sits alone at her desk because she is the Quiet Lonely Girl and Bender sits on his own because he is the Rebel who doesn't need any student's approval or friendship. Claire and Andrew sit at the same desk because they're pretty much in the same social circle.

gees with an E Not particularly because even though Brian is a geek, he seems to still belong to a social group of ‘geeks’ (even if they are ostracized by other social groups including the popular kids). Brian ‘does not belong’ with Claire, Andrew and Bender in the social hierarchy and I would argue that Allison ‘does not belong’ with Brian either (at the beginning of the film). Allison seems to be a lonely person who has no friends and belongs to no group. So she is one rung further down the social chain than Brian and therefore it wouldn’t make sense for her to sit with Brian. And this is further reflected in the way the other three characters acknowledge Brian in the first half even if Bender teases him whereas they all ignore Allison for the most part except for the ‘Ha’ moment and her biting her nails loudly. I probably should have clarified this in my above comment.

I don’t think there is any movie that describes being a teenager better than The Breakfast Club. What’s even more poignant about it is that most of what teenagers dealt with in the 80s is still applicable to the teenagers of the 21st century; it shows me how timeless this movie is. Nothing could ever top this film.

I read alot of comments where people were talking about a remake of this. I believe one reason why it hasn't is because u just don't mess with perfection. John Hughes was an absolute visionary genius. And as far as I know none of his movies have been remade. Sure materialistic things've changed. Hair, fashion, music & technology. But the teenage angst & social issues they cover in this movie are still SO relevant today. My 24 year old niece saw this & loved it. And she fully got everything they were talking about.

Hollywood producers better not do a remake of a highschool movie which represents the 1980s young generation when guys like me grew up, or it's going to fail. If they want to do another one then they should come up with an entirely new highschool movie and completely different plot, story and characters which best represent the culture and young generations of today in this 21st century. And they shouldn't call it "The Breakfast Club 2" but use a different, new and suitable title. They can, however, make some nostalgic reference to this movie, like a quote or something.

"Does Barry Manilow know that you wear his wardrobe?" This line is interesting, because in the german dub Bender asked if Phil Collins knows if he wears his Wardrobe. I guess people here in Germany know Phil Collins more then Barry Manilow.

@supercyberfunk
@supercyberfunk 9 жыл бұрын
***** No, but she was already referencing German dub, so I already assumed Sparkledash1 wasn't German... unless, of course she IS German, but was also addressing people who aren't, then... you know what? I don't know what the hell she is trying to convey! Everything's texted, so certain inflections in dialogue are left out and meaning is often misinterpreted.

Even though I hate movie remakes, this one is actually one that they could remake for today, because things have changed a lot. Or they could make a sequel where the five kids are all grown up and now their kids are in detention. No, that's dumb on second thought. Remake.
