Excellent video, all true, thank you. For those who have asked about the cost of kerosene, the heat content of K-1 kerosene is about 135,000 BTUs per gallon. This means that 1 gallon of kerosene is roughly equivalent to 39.5 kWh of electricity, when both are used for heat. Kerosene was very expensive during the 2022-23 winter, due to shortages and other factors, but even at $6 per gallon, which was the typical cost in my area, kerosene is the same price as electricity at about 15 cents per kilowatt hour, which is still less than many people now pay for their electricity. If kerosene drops to $5 per gallon, a more typical price over the last few winters, it is then in parity with electricity at about 12.5 cents per kilowatt hour. The other really good thing about kerosene heaters is that you get so much more heat from them. A 23,000 BTU kerosene heater produces more heat than 4 plug-in 1500 W electric heaters. I also think kerosene heaters can be safer than electric heaters, especially in an old house, where the wiring might not be adequate. Just always remember these safety rules: Never refuel the heater while it is operating. Shut it off and let it cool first. Never store your kerosene inside the house. Take the heater outside to refuel it after it has cooled off. Never attempt to carry the kerosene heater around while it is operating.

My parents had a kero heater back when I was a kid (it was a Sears branded unit, so probably something like a Toyotomi, or Toyostove something like that), and as the years went by I got back into them. My current Dyna Glo has to be pushing 17 years old. Only thing I ever did to it was dry burn once a week and yearly wick replacements. This thing gets used nonstop too! From November to normally the beginning of March it's running 24/7. It's nice getting up at 3am to hit the bathroom and having a nice warm house to walk around in, even when we're in the negatives here in PA.

I collect antique kerosene lamps, both flat wick, English double wick and the Rayo central draft round wicks. I am amazed in the wintertime how much heat they give off in addition to a very pleasant light that even allows one to read with the proper shades. if you use the high-quality KI heater fuel there is no odor no smoke and I never have to clan the chimneys if the wicks are properly adjusted. In a power out situation four of these lamps in any room would keep you from freezing!

I'm trying to use this as my primary heat source. I am in Georgia and the winters are getting colder and colder. My bill was $350 when we got to 3 degrees, because my heat pump could not keep up. If you run it at certain times it cost more, and I work from home. I saw on Reddit a near by gas station carries kerosene for $7 a gallon and Walmart has k1 for $12 a gallon. Have to calculate how long I can run it daily without breaking the bank.

Sending a great big shout out to my North American brethren from Holly old Blighty! Particularly y’all from Texas (being half Texan myself). I’ve watched plenty of prepper channels for many years- the info has been invaluable. Living on a boat in England- I’m not entirely off grid but for me, a paraffin stove is the cheapest and most efficient way to heat my home , particularly with the cost of things going up. Wouldn’t have thought of it thought without channels such as yours. Also gives a small sense of security- knowing that I am in control of my heating once I’ve purchased my litres of paraffin and stored it. God bless you guys

I remember in the 90s my parents would always light up the kerosene heaters during the winter. It was always a treat to come home from sledding, and warm up by the stove with while watching the snow fall some more. And to your point of cooking on the heaters - my mom would occasionally make hot chocolate for us on it after we came back from our sledding adventures or shoveling the sidewalks and driveway. Lot of good memories.....

Thank you for mentioning venting a window and a CO detector. In more modern efficient homes this is important. Also K-1 Kerosene is the only type of fuel for unvented heaters. Yes ultra low sulfur diesel will burn but has additional oils in the fuel that will shorten the wicks life. The Kerosene used should have less than 400PPM (or 0.04% by weight) sulfur to reduce sulfur dioxide output. If you can find it at a local gas station, ultra low sulfur Kerosene with 15 ppm sulfur or less is the way to go. Dry burn your wick every 4 or 5 tanks of use and change out the wick every year with a good quality wick from Miles Stair wick shop and you should be good to go :-) They're great for just as you both described. Good video.

I'm a first time kerosene burner with the Dyna Glo 10,000btu heater. I recently moved into an older (vacant for the past 5-6 yrs.) farmhouse with baseboard heaters as my heat source. It took a week to fill holes, insulate around both door casings and overall weatherization. I used spray foam insulation and dense car seat foam. Well, I just got my first electric bill and it's outrageous 🤯! I do not like the fact that me, my clothing and home will smell like kerosene. Nor for my concern for my indoor animals. I understand they're safe, but, can't help my concerns with them and their air quality. It's been indoors for an hour now. I'll shut it down overnight and hopefully it'll do okay for us. Happy New Year everyone!

Great video... what is the monthly cost of kerosene you use to run your heater... kerosene at the pumps here is $6.78 a gallon as of December 1, at tractor supply it’s $58 for 5 gallons... I get 11-12 hours per full tank with my 1.9 gallon heater.. I worked in a non heated house and my cost in kerosene was about $45 dollars a week, in two weeks I spent near $100 in kerosene... naturally I added it to the project cost

@SixthDayRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Haha never! Always happy to help! Additive and stabilizer are often the same thing. You have to make sure it's specific to kerosene. Only real reason to use it is if you have an open container that sits for multiple years. Kerosene is so stable it's unlikely you'll ever need it. Some folks add some just because it makes them more comfortable with long term storage. I've heard stories of folks using kerosene, untreated, that's over 15 years old with no issues.

This is frustrating to me, since I just bought the same heater that you have. The first night I used it, I developed a bad headache… I guess my question is, why do you say kerosene is a safe and stable fuel, when so many other sources claim the opposite? We think it's great because it is. Education is very important when using any type of heating device. The reason his smells so bad is because he's not using the recommended type of fuel. The proper, recommended fuel is 1-k kerosene which is orderless and very clean. If you were in a bind and needed to use alternative fuels there's nothing wrong with that either just make sure to ventilate your space. I'd rather smell a little fuel than allow my family to freeze. Cheers and I hope you stay safe and warm!

Been there. Done that. Garbage heat. I don't care how efficiently it burns you better enjoy the taste of it on your dishes. And you'll really appreciate it when you start cleaning walks, ceilings, floors, etc.

We burn 1 in the hunting camp bunk room. Never had any issues with carbon monoxide. 12 guys farting all night was the problem.
