On a recent springtime Sunday in historic Charleston, South Carolina, I introduced myself to Annette Howard and her family. Annette is a longtime teacher who is native to the Charleston area. She belongs to an African American subgroup called the Gullah, who have their own unique culture & Creole language that descended from enslaved West Africans in the Carolina & Georgia coastal region.
We had a candid conversation about the massive number of people relocating to this charming coastal city--particularly from northeastern states like New York and New Jersey--and how their arrival in Charleston and South Carolina in general has impacted the local economy, quality of life, and culture in positive and negative ways. Annette loves her hometown, and she and her aunt proudly describe southern hospitality and manners.
She and her husband, Fred, also address the history of racial segregation in South Carolina, specifically how African Americans, including her parents, were shortchanged adequate educations, among other injustices. Ultimately, as first members of their families to attain higher degrees, as successful career people, and as parents & grandparents of college graduates, she & Fred personify the power of intelligence, discipline, and knowledge.

Please don't ever let the Gullah culture slip away. We are in desperate need of more people with manners and respect for each other. I'm 53, born and raised in a small NC town. Having manners and respect were taught to us from the beginning. I see less and less of people with manners as the years go by.

Did the government come in and rip out your people’s business sections to put in the state and federal highways? I know Annette personally. She's genuinely a kind woman. There is definitely a clash between those of us who are from Charleston and the Northerners who generally bring zero hospitality. So as a result, Charlestoners are becoming more hostile in order to defend/protect ourselves. The traffic is horrendous. It takes me 1 hour 10 minutes to get to a 40 minute destination. I LOVE my city and change is inevitable. But the hospitality that I grew up experiencing in 80's and 90's is slowly disappearing.

They’re not lying about the ma’am and sir thing-it’s not an insult, it’s called “good manners.” I’m in my mid-50s and if I am assisted by a shop clerk in their 20s I will still say “Thank you, ma’am/sir.” I can’t stand hearing kids respond to elders with “What?” or “Huh?” 😐

Respect and matters have largely faded regardless of location, be it North or South. I relocated to Atlanta from the North in the late 80s when I was young, and my expectations of good food, women cooking, matters or southern draw wasn't exactly met. Atlanta was a city of transplants then, as it remains today-it was rare to encounter a Grady Baby as it is today. Like Charleston, transplants have overpopulated Atlanta and implemented their ways ideas, cultures and influences. It's not the same Atlanta of the 1980s and it will never be again. The influx of transplants and gentrification has in fact misplaced Atlanta natives and made them almost invisible in the new Belt Line era.

It’s been butchered out. Disgusting to watch when you know what Charleston used to be. I have zero desire to visit anymore at all. (Nothing but a sea of “me too” ants trying to climb on the same small pile, destroying what drew them to the “arreah” (that’s the way they say it) in the first place. Sickening. I’ll never understand the caveman mentality of moving into an area from an area you helped destroy or make unlivable (you wouldn’t be moving otherwise) and expecting to turn it into what you left behind……amazing the density of some craniums.

I’m from the North and was born in the 60s. I was raised to be respectful of ALL my elders. Children and those in their twenties (not all but a lot) seem to have lost that respect for their elders or were never taught it. The way they talk to their parents, the cursing out in public in front of elders, is so disrespectful and sad. If I talked to my parents like that, just know that I obviously wouldn’t be here typing this right now. 😂🤣 I was afraid to say or do something out in public that I shouldn’t be saying/doing because Mom or Nana would hear about it before I got back home. 💯 I’m 58 now and I’m so very thankful to have grown up when I did. Well I’m from the UK and we spent at least three decades rebuilding after the war. And I know that in America young men in the fifties through to the seventies fought in the Korean and Vietnamese wars you had times of change with the ending of segregation in the southern state and civil rights marches. The generations that young people today dismiss the generations that fought to make the world a better place. My parents aren't from the South, but they were from Oklahoma and I was taught the "sir" and "ma'am" addressing people in businesses even though I was born and raised in California. When I was working in a hotel in California I was called on it more than once by people from the Northeast or Los Angeles. I had one middle aged lady from L.A. that got really indignant when I addressed her as ma'am. She said "Don't call me ma'am! Makes me feel old!". I explained it was just my upbringing as a show of respect. 😆 BTW I love talking with people out in public! It's so much fun and you learn so much, especially when you travel somewhere.

Also, I LOVE South Carolina, especially Myrtle Beach and Charleston, respectively! BUT, it is an OVEN with Mosquitoes in the Summer!!!

Beautiful family with sweet soul. Can see the love between them. The husband manning the swing made me smile. Hugs to these wonderful people.

This was a lovely video to watch. These women are the jewels of the south. And all the comments about people moving in having to adapt to their new environment and RESPECT it as well. It’s just common sense and manners.Thank you for your intake.
