Mulch mulch mulch! I got ours planted in early October, and it put on probably 6-8 inches of growth before winter even hit. After a couple frosts I tossed a bunch of leaves on the bed, right before that big January freeze. It got down to 15 a few times here, and never got out of freezing temps for about a week. The garlic is still going strong, but the cover crop I planted with it did it's job and died off!

Mine is sprouting, I planted in October. In 2022, I planted in October and my garlic did just fine. I'm in the mountains of North Carolina. Our weather has been strange, as it gets warm, then a cold snap comes where we get in the mid 20's for one night. I'm going to cover them next time we get a frost or a freeze. My garlic is already two feet tall. 🤣 I planted 4 weeks before my first frost date, but the weather at the end of October was super hot, and we didn't get frost until late December. A few mild frosts and some snow in January, but then the weather started warming up again to the high 60s all through February and into March, even though my official last frost date is around mid April. I'm just embracing the growth because there's literally nothing else I can do! 🤣

How did it go? It's only Nov 2nd and my softneck in zone 9a is already like 10 inches tall, and it's still in the 70s. Hopefully it works out but I've never grown it. I heard to start it the same time as onions but I guess next year I'll start garlic weeks later.

Here in the North of England we can have some very long cold wet winters. I plant my garlic 1st Oct every year and just leave it alone. I don’t cover the beds, mulch or anything. I get a fantastic harvest every year ❤🇬🇧

Perfect timing because I planted mine in MO in mid October. I planted deep and put straw over and it still poked through in December because of the weird weather we've had. Now it's March and it's sprouting second and third sets of leaves but looks really healthy. So im glad it knows what it's doing better than I do 😂

I have a nice landrace hardneck garlic that came from my grandma’s garden, where it grew prolifically as a volunteer for decades and was rarely disturbed or harvested. I live in Oklahoma, and it grows slowly but continually throughout the winter, and shows no signs of damage until temps reach 15 degrees or so. A couple months ago, we hit -2 degrees, and the garlic was briefly killed to the ground level, but had 6 inches of new leaf growth within two weeks of warming up. I almost never water or feed it, and last year I got about 15 lbs of garlic from very minimal effort. I usually let a few go to “seed” and plant the resulting bulbils in the fall. It’s a great way to produce hundreds of plants as well as revitalizing the garlic strain, even if you end up with a few heads that are a bit smaller than they would otherwise be. Garlic is amazingly hardy.

My biggest issue in TN is getting too much rain which is detrimental to garlic. I’m using big barrel planters and a raised bed this year. I can cover them easier if we are under a deluge.

I live in the low desert of Arizona by Phoenix and my garlic is about a foot and a half maybe a foot and a half tall some of it that I planted a little earlier because we have had a warmer winter with only about one frost and it probably will be ready a little earlier than usual, but it should do OK

I planted in October in Zone 9. I like hard neck which is not for my area but when I plant in October I get 100% crop growth. When my garlic starts growing too early I wait until the leaves are 8 to 10 inches long and I cut them down to around 4 inches. I did this as an experiment and they bounce back without any problem and made huge bulbs. I think I'm on to something here.

I am in Massachusetts and I embrace the growth of my garlic. I plant hard necks in early November, and they start growing before the end of the year. I also plant soft necks. I covered them all with a lot of leaves and then i removed the leaves permanently in late February. The winter is kind of mild this year also, so no worries on my end.

Had one bulb grow larger than the others last winter, so knowing it would die back, I cut the leaves for a salad. That one took an extra month to grow in the spring and it never caught up to the uncut ones that mostly did great.

Our garlic here in Oklahoma is already a good 7-8in above the mulch. Our last average frost is early April, and so far there are no temps lower than 38 on the 10-day forecast. Fingers crossed we are good to go!

My garlic grew to about 4” in late December. Then in January when we had the really cold snap it died off. And this spring with warm weather we’ve had it has not regrown. Do I need to discard it or wait? Thanks for any help.

We don't worry about when it comes up early spring.. It is up now. We pull it when it starts turning brown at the top usually late June or in July. Some if it will grow in spite of what you do. Garlic is very hardy. You can't plant it again until fall anyhow is the way we understand it .

Last year was my first time to try growing garlic. I didn't really know how, but I did anyway😂 My cloves came late in October. I planted as soon as I could. A few days later, we were dropped into -5 to -10° temps, so I grabbed an empty "clear" Rubbermaid tote and turned it upside down over the newly planted garlic. It wasn't big enough to cover all of them, but most. I never thought anything about how soon they sprouted, I was just happy I had saved them! They did very well. I planted a whole lot more this time!

Mine are peeking thru over the chopped leaves and a deep layer of straw i put down when i planted them oct 4th. I just loosely placed some extra straw over them a couple weeks ago... they are doing fine. Zone 5b, we have been in the 50s-70° daytime and into the 20s at night for the last 5 weeks. Ive pulled the cover back and touched the soil, and its still chilly. Theyre happy!

We are in Zone 5b, in Maine. What I was taught, recommended to do, is to watch the Long range forecast and plant 2-3 weeks before 1st hard frost. This gives them time to set down roots before they are frozen in place for the winter. Covered with 6-8"s of straw. We also soak the cloves in a liquid solution of water, liquid seaweed, and baking soda for 3-4hrs. Allegedly that helps keep the cloves from rotting in the ground. I've never lost a single one so, if it ain't broken don't fix it. We leave the straw on until the leaves start poking up through it and then only about 3/4's of the straw comes off leaving a layer of an inch or two of mulch for the season. Never have to weed. We plant 162 cloves each year, and harvest 162 every year 2nd week of July. We've also never had a single one germinate, sprout in the fall. And yes, the weather has been way passed weird here, actually 2nd year in a row. Avg snow fall is around 68"s. This year 27"s so far. When checking for soil temp we use an insta read thermometer. If I can't stick it into the ground, it's still frozen. If it does insert I take a reading. I always plant by soil temp. Checking it daily. Today, all our beds are reading between 46 to 52 degrees. Except one. My Garlic bed covered in straw, is still frozen! Like you said, as long as they are happy, I let my Garlic do, what it knows how to do best. 😄 Good Luck this year.

I started my garlic in a plate of water on Nov 17th. Planted them a few days to a week later. Some are currently about 12" tall and we're looking at a low of 28 tonight. Hopefully it's the last freeze. I'm thinking about putting a few clear totes over some of the taller ones and just see what happens with any I don't get covered. Last year's super harsh colds took out everything, including the wild onions in the yard that I'd never seen die before.

In 7A, I’ve been growing hard-neck garlic for a dozen years, and over the years have slowly moved my planting date from mid-September to late October. I used to see the garlic sprout before Winter, but even then it was never a real issue in the final product. I keep a couple of inches of mulch on top of garlic from Day 1 to Harvest. Mulch is your friend. The mulch also helps with deterring squirrels, but for extra protection, I tack a layer of bird netting over the top of the bed that I only remove in early Spring when the garlic growth starts and when I transplant my lettuce between the garlic rows. I’ll use row covers on cold nights, but it’s really just for the lettuce.

Here in Ohio my garlic sprouted late November. With temps in the 60’s during the day and lows in mid 40’s for a couple weeks they’ve really had a growth spurt. I’ve been planting in mid-late November and usually get them sprouting late December/early January. I’ve only grown it two years in a row to be fair. Also, NW Oregon has a lot of cold, but not a lot of very cold. So, mostly above freezing and very wet. Winter Cutworms were trying to eat mine at one point.

I planted mine in November I have elephant garlic German Hardy Korean garlic chesno red hard necks. A few of sprouted it's 50° here in Wisconsin and it was upwards of 60 to 63 ° about 3 days last week. I have about 50 cloves planted I'm going to have a ton.

I have some sprouting but not as tall as yours, and some has not sprouted yet. I felt around in the soil and some is actually bulbing up already, so that is probably a good sign that the energy is going into the bottom rather than the tops. Maybe I'll even get an earlier harvest than I thought! My next door neighbor has garlic that is definitely too tall. She pulled one out of the ground and hers looks more like a bunching onion. My last frost date is April 1st and it has been in the 40s and 50s at night; so far no freezes. The only thin I'm a little concerned about is that there are still some days that it rains alot. My garlic is in grow bags so it does drain easily but I do have to fluff up the soil a bit after a rain so it doesn't get too packed. we've actually had a few hot days already. I hope it doesn't get too hot too fast. Last summer it was impossible to grow much because of the heat and humidity.

I started mine in October and one of my varieties is taking off like a rocket. It's probably 8 or more inches tall and it's gotten down to 26 a few times the last week with no issues. My least cold hardy variety just started popping up about a week ago so they are still small. They'll all be fine.

Thank you for this!! I tried my hand at garlic for the first time this fall. I'm in west MI and we had very little snow or rain and I was concerned that they wouldn't even grow. I had topped the bed with about 7 inches of straw. I went to check on the 2 weeks ago and green was popping out everywhere!! So now, after watching this, and seeing you have no straw on them, should I take that straw off them? I can put compose soil on them, as you said in your video but still not sure if I should take the straw off.

Berkshires, Massachusetts. Planted 90 garlic in late October. Sprouted w/ vigor in mid December. No idea where winter went this year. We panicked and was told to cover w/ leaves. They were 12 inches high. I covered and it was too dense. Removed the layers of leaves to find white/yellow wet destruction. I am not sure if they will come back. I am going to turn the bed and direct sow brussels. Carrots for the second area, but will wait a couple of weeks to see what happens Is there any hope for the garlic? So, bummed, but learned to leave alone of try straw coverage. This winter was so mild that they may have done okay. Sad. Peace

I planted garlic for the first time in December and they pretty much started growing right away. The winter has been so mild here (MI) that mine are already getting pretty big. This was just garlic I bought at the grocery store and one of the plants did die of frost but for the most part they’re looking great. I’m kinda shocked that mine are actually quite a bit bigger than yours here. The weird thing though is the ones I planted in ground are doing great but the ones I planted in a large container on my porch just will not sprout no matter what. Maybe they have less protection from cold?

HELP!!!! Some of my garlic is 24 inch high. My garlic greens on the garlic is more than 12 inches long in some of them! We are suppose to have a 29 degrees night in the 10 day forecast the rest is in the 40s but usually in April hits us with another freeze! What can I do? I was thinking in cutting the greens to about 6 inches long but i have no idea! I don't think that a 29 degrees for 2 or 3 hours at night will kill it but what do you suggest ? @emilypark7550 It'll come up. In the colder zones (3 + 4), the garlic doesn't show up until mid to late April, especially if you've laid down a nice layer of mulch/straw. I've grown it for years, and at least 90% make it.
