Traction (sand boards) like max trax are an incredible and light weight recovery tool for extracting vehicles from mud and sand. They can also be used to level your trailer depending on the wheelbase.

Not going to be negative. My Dad added 4 large spotlights on the underside of thr trailer. Makes backing up or dark areas easier to park in. As for the cabinets, we use hair ties to bungee the cabinet doors together for travels days. He even added some hooks inside the cabinets to attach bungee to keep the cabinets closed. Never had a problem after that.

Imagine buying a 35’ boat made with staples and pressboard and under-spec tubing. You’d sink before you untied from the dock. Or a $100k boat whose value depreciates 60% the first two years. Build quality determines value? Who knew?!
@NoOrdinaryPath2 жыл бұрын
This little (big) travel trailer served us well during four years of full timing with a family of 5. We paid 28K in cash and still got 10K in trade value when we upgraded 4 years later. Yes it depreciated but we did not have a mortgage or car payments during that time. That 18k we spent across 48 months comes to an average of $375 per month. Not bad for housing. Plus it took us thousands of miles all over the country. Feels like a win to me.

Be careful turning your trailer to sharp, the heavier it is the more likely your axles are to twist in two different directions breaking leaf springs and brackets or possibly blowing a tire. I almost learned the hard way before someone showed me what my tires were doing doing sharp turns.

One of the coolest things we have seen camping was the first time we camped at Payne’s Prarie state park here in Florida. We were camping for the weekend with my in-laws in their 5th wheel. Being retired they went early in the day and checked both us and them into our site. My wife and I got away from work late so by the time we got underway it was already dark. If not for going with my in-laws we probably would have cancelled. The entire drive to camp we were concerned about setting up in the dark. We arrived at the park found our way to our site. As we came around the last corner we realized there was a bright light. My in-laws and the camp hosts had turned on every light they could find and had built a roaring camp fire. That well lit camp site that nite was one of the best thing we have ever seen camping.

Pro Tip: Learned this from one of the RV Facebook forums I'm a member of. When screws won't hold things like a door in, add toothpicks to the screw hole and then add the screw back. This helps give the screw more meat to bite into and hold securely.

Don't feel bad. Anyone who does more than sit on the couch has mishaps. We have been RVing for 14 years, so we have experience, however, on a rushed trip back to Texas when my husband's mother passed away a two second mistake caused a major problem. We pulled over for lunch onto a center median parking area on Main St. In a small town. When we were leaving, we heard a bad scrap and clunk. The center median was decorated with cute little streetlights on posts that dangled into the street area about 10 ft tall. The motorhome had scrapped across the protruding arm of the light and sliced a large gash completely through the exterior fiberglass all the way to the aluminum framing. Thankfully we were only 3 hours from home. Unbelievably, the gash was contained inside of a horizontal maroon stripe which I had repainted 2 years earlier. We sanded down the rough edges and filled the gash with fiberglass fibered bondo. I still had the maroon paint, so I repainted the stripe. The damage is almost invisible. Live and learn how to repair! Ya'll are gaining a tremendous amount of problem solving experience.

Looks like you were not the only ones that hit the mud pit! Glad all was well. Great atgitude! I am new to your tube. What rig do you call home? How long is it? How are the kids handling it? Do you weary of moving? We are going to full time for a number of reasons. I am older with an adult son who has Downs. He is not too thrilled about leaving our little cabin in the woods but i cannot live this very rugged life any more, and people here have changed so much the last 4 years that it seems that i never knew them. It is dangerous. However, I am concerned about getting a large enough trailer to make it home for us. How do you park something so large, and where can you go? How do you get fuel (crunch)? Liks you, places we planned to stop had been closed, or the rules had change! We parked overnight in a few store lots where it seemed safe, and rest stops, but a few places did not feel safe at all. One time, i remember a terrible fearful, chill hit me for no good reason. It just felt like death! I was way too tired to be driving, but i knew instantly that we had to leave! The next stop, i could not go on. The sign said no overnighting, but i did not care if they hauled me to jail, as long as they did not wake me up. I knew we were safe and slept like a rock! But we barely fit with a 25 ft, how will we with a 40 ft? And the bed situation for permanent nomad life ...is a foldout couch fair to my beloved son? He is my son, but the trailers are designed for couples or couples with small children or grand children. I keep asking for twin beds so we do not need a mid room. He cannot use a bunk. I cannot, either!I found only one fifth wheel that i would want to spend my remaining years in but it only has one bedroom. Being in my dog years i want to make good memories with my son, and find a back up plan for when i am not able to care for him. It happens to everyone eventually. I have much to enjoy and a whole lot to look forward to. Our little trailer is much easier than this cabin. The rvs they have now are so luxurious even with things falling apart on occasion. I almost feel guilty when i think of those with nothing at all. Hey, repairs happen in homes, too. Big ones and small. The trailer was really great when we could use it, but yeh, we spent the whole summer taking it in for repairs and never got to use it until September! Then it snowed 8-9 "! In September! But you know we had some weird stuff happen and being alone, i got worried, but i wasn't alone, really and everything worked out in spite of me getting a little panic attack! God is SO Good! Well, blessings and Happy New Year! Thanks for the vid!
@NoOrdinaryPath4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks so much for watching our video. There are so many designs and floor plans out there. You just have to find the one that best fits your needs. Even in a travel trailer like ours, you could make the bunk room into a bedroom with a queen bed with a little tweaking. You'll get the best bang for the buck if you find a good solid used rig and do a little renovating to make it how you like it. As for length, we generally do not have a difficult time finding places to stay. We are 37 feet long. While we love to boondock, there are times we stay at a park instead. So if there isn't a free place to park nearby we usually turn to our Passport America membership for half price campgrounds or find a state park. I hope that helps a little. Best wishes to you as you set out on this adventure.

I'm paranoid about dropping my trailer wheels into a ditch in the dark like this, so I installed LED floodlights on the frame about 4 feet in front of the front trailer wheels. It is activated by a (amazon) wireless switch from the cab. They illuminate all 4 tires and the terrain 4 feet in front and I can tell from the side mirrors what I need to miss. Similar to "docking lights" on the big class A's. Also have similar set-up mounted on bottom of rear bumper facing backwards that will light up a campsite I'm backing into like daylight, also activated with wireless switch (have to order one with different frequency). I was immediately concerned about filling your brake drums with that sludgy mud and aggregate. Has that created problems?

Hey can you post a link to the lights you used and how you did it ? Thanks :)
@jimcollins80974 жыл бұрын
Did that 4 years ago and don't have a link. They are 6" x 6" with a 9 led array. You want a lot of light but in a floodlight array, not spotlite. They are aimed down about 30 degrees so they won't blind anyone. This isn't right forum for a step by step but I'll give you the 2 things I tried several ways: 1. Light is mounted so top of light is even with bottom of frame, but on the outside of frame maybe 4" over. You want to see outside of tires, not inside. 2. I tried to mount the trailer half of the wireless switch down near the lights but switch in the cab would not activated it every time. Finally mounted it as high and forward as I could which was top shelf of one of the closets on either side of bed. Our trailer is stick/tin and it works every time there. Switch in the cab is mounted on the sun visor. Wireless switches come in different amp ratings, so get one heavy enough for your lights or else use a relay. I picked up the hot wire from my front stabilizer.

Getting your rig stuck like that is not much fun. Been there, done that and got the T shirt. We were fortunate we didn’t damage anything as well as least we think we didn’t. While getting a wheel alignment done the technician advised that the passenger side sees the most wear and tear from road hazards because of short turns, road debris on the road sides , broke pavement on the roads edge etc. You might want to keep a close eye for abnormal tire wear over the next while just in case you tweaked that axle.

A coal pile in the dark can be almost like a cave, when they shut the lights out. Can't see squat. Even with head lights pointed at where you need to go. Backing up is a nightmare. Laying lights on the ground to mark out your path works wonders. Really nice when backing into a camp site. Just lay the light on ground where you want your left side of the bumper to be. But apart from that we let her off. She is excellent at "healing" (staying by us) and enjoys the freedom. We boondock for this very reason. There were no other dogs around and not many people for that matter at the car wash.

Thanks for sharing the difficult along with the mediocre times and fun stuff! I’m not sure I would have the composure to pick up a camera during such a challenging - so hats off to you. I would add that another confounding factor is that the visibility - tinted windows or not - is not greatest immediately to the front and right out of any of the 2500,3500-F250 to F450 tow vehicles compared even to a 1/2 ton pickup. But agree having the combo of heavier, more powerful with 4x4 is what got you out of that tough place. Question though: you have the advantage of a chase vehicle... why are you not using that to check out boondocking sites in the dark before fully committing and pulling the rig in?

Wow, a little over the top with the reaction. I’d hate to see what happens when a true stressor is introduced.
@budirwin98254 жыл бұрын
That's a fact. Screaming omg is very lame.

Well, when you’re in the middle of nowhere, it’s dark, you have 3 kids to feed and get to bed and you see your HOME tipped off in a mud hole and think it might tip over.......it’s probably a little more stressful than sitting in your lazy-boy watching this unfold 🤷🏼♀️

Emotions can make things dramatically worse, especially from my long haired roommate. Anyone that says they don't make mistakes is a liar. No injury? no big deal either.

G.O.A.L., get out and look, you have to have a goal, & windows roll down just saying.

No kidding Adam. I love the tent on bright days and typically do roll them down when parking and backing but this was just rolling up to the site. A stupid mistake but one I'll learn from.

From what I can tell from you guys you spend more money trying to be cheap charlie then it would cost just getting full hook up camp ground. Also everyone of those broke springs is because you still havent learned how to drive after three yrs. Might consider paying for a lesson on how to do right turns you need it bad.
@NoOrdinaryPath4 жыл бұрын
Okay, Brian. Well, we avoid campgrounds on purpose because we like boondocking better not because it's cheaper.
