Voice of Cards is another good pick for modern JRPGs that don't need a ton of commitment. They're only $30 per game, take 20 hours or less, and they're very lean on what they want from the player. Also, Yoko Taro.

Voice of Cards is honestly a great series of light JRPG's if you need something to just fill the gaps between larger game releases. it also helps that they have genuinely intriguing stories and amazing music. and for being a game told mainly through the medium of cards, the presentation is surprisingly good.

If Xenogears should ever be remade, I think just a remaster would be good enough. I don't know why, but when I played the Live-A-Live demo, the chapter with the small robot in space, it reminded me of a Solaris base. Speaking of FF6, awhile back, Asano said that the CEO of Square Enix asked for a list of games that would work as an HD-2D game, and I can't imagine FF6 not being on that list! I mean.. it's a no-brainer. Whether it will happen or not is another question, and the biggest reason I say this is the existence of the FF Pixel Remaster. An HD-2D remake would essentially replace the the Pixel Remaster, whereas a full 3D remake could exist alongside the Pixel Remaster, very much like how the Trials of Mana remake exists alongside the OG in the Collection of Mana. Regardless, an FF6 remake, if done properly, would be god-tier (FF6 is my favorite game of all time :) ). Also, totally agree with you regarding a Xenogears remake. Would be cool, but Takahashi would have to be involved, because I don't know that I would trust anyone else with the thematic complexity and depth of the game. Of course, with Monolith being owned by Nintendo, that means it would be a Nintendo exclusive game, which would be.. interesting. :D Lastly, one game that desperately needs a remake (or at least an enhanced remaster) is Vagrant Story. Not sure if you played it back in the day, but it's truly one of Square's best and most unique games. And in the 22+ years since its release, nothing has been done with it apart from putting it up on PSN for PS3/Vita. A game this good needs to be accessible to new and old fans alike. I'm crossing my fingers that the Tactics Ogre remaster, followed by the rumoured FF Tactics remaster will lead to the return of Vagrant Story!

@The_Real_DCT

Especially since the prices for some consoles and games are rediculous. Not everyone is going to want to pay say 60 dollars for a Dreamcast or a GameCube, then get a old tube TV or buy a HDMI solution, then pay 80-100 dollars for something like Skies of Arcadia (based on what my copy sold for last year), even worse if it's a game on a even more obscure console like Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn. Yeah it's rediculous to say that certain games shouldn't be remade, remastered or re-released because you can just play the original or emulate. Because shit isn't always cheap as I pointed out and emulation can be hit and miss depending on the system and it's architecture

I've only played Trails In The Sky, so I don't know if this holds for other games in the series, but I see it more as an RPG with a Tactical Battle System than a Tactical RPG. For me a Tactical RPG usually has to involve setpiece battles, and meaningful terrain, not just grid combat. So, enemies placements that are important, differences between hills and forest's, or even just the ability to exploit choke points. I wouldn't consider Live A Live, Agarest War, Enchanted Arms, or Lunar as Tactical RPGs either.

@@Galanthos Totally fair! My hot take is a bit of a stretch. It has the fundamentals of a Tactical rpg. Grid (or space) based combat. Level up mechanics. Though we still call them Tactical.

@@titanforge4317 I can definitely see the argument! It just feels too much like a normal JRPG to me. I would also not sleep on the two South Park games from recent years. The first is a Paper Mario esque style RPG (with more depth), while the second is more of a tactics game, where you have to worry about positioning, enemy knockback, etc. I think the story and paving is much better in the first game, but I actually think the gameplay is better in the second. My wife and I are trying to find something in the vein of the second game, but all we have at the moment is Mario+Rabbids. If you like South Park, Stick of Truth and Fractured But While are not to be missed. I wish we had some more games that had this style of gameplay. Feels like tactics style games are usually only found in some pretty hardcore games.

Some good oldschool tactical RPG's that in my opinion are some of the best. I highly recommend the Arc of lad series, the first game is real short, but the second game is a direct sequel which is an actual full on JRPG with explorable dungeons,towns,bounty quests and so much more. Not just a great tactics game, it's actually probably one of the best JRPGs on the PS1 imo. The rest of the series past the 2nd game also stays on the line between regular JRPG and tactics game. A lot of people didn't enjoy the third one probably since it has a super generic fantasy story, but I thought it was really fun. What I liked about it is you just get a small 5 man tactical party team and that is it, just like a standard RPG party. The PS2 game is also really really good, and I can not recommend it enough. All these games can be bought on PS4 I am pretty sure under classics. The other tactics game I highly recommend is Vandal Hearts on PS1, just the first game though. It is a super standard tactics game, but it's a lot of fun and is one of my favorite.I don't mind the tactics games everyone else recommends, but to me, they are just so much of the same. Oh, political battles of army vs army with a ton of units you just don't really give a crap about. But these games I recommended are much more simple and straight to the point that feel like a regular RPG story turned into tactics games. Trust me as a fellow sometimes simple is better kind of JRPG lover you will like these games that will not feel like a giant commitment and more like "oh this is like playing lunar, Grandia, or any other old school regular RPG for the first time"!

For the most part, I'm fine with older sprite-based IPs coming back through a remake/remastered. If done well, they serve as a good way to introduce a new audience to them. And at worst, well, the originals will always still be there. But lately, I've been coming at an impasse over the style of how most of those remakes/remasters look. I guess to latch onto an early point you touched on...I still feel very mixed about the whole HD-2D sprites personally. I understand why people like them, or at least I think I do, but something about how they look just doesn't seem right to me and I'm having difficulty understanding why exactly. At first I thought it was just the overbearing use of bloom and other VFX but even without those, they still look off. Maybe it's the proportions relative to the details, since many are still very SD, or maybe it's something regarding the animations...I'm not sure. Either way, my inane opinions aside, as long as the IP continues to prosper and grow, it's all good. Anyways, skipping ahead, SRPGs. Not a genre for everyone but I very much love them. Probably my most played subgenre of RPG aside from traditional RPGs. There's a surprising amount of variety among them, even if a large chunk fall into the category of being "FF Tactics" clones, so hopefully you find something that jells with you. If nothing else, it's a popping subgenre even now so you'll likely never be short on choices to pick from. Heck, I'm still sitting on a couple I've been meaning to get around to.

I agree for the most part but as a table top player, does it not bother you that people with a clearly ulterior motive have come in and co-opted the hobby with their own agenda, trying to force stupid changes like the recent claim that some Simian race was a racist representation of people of color when it clearly was not. Or the completely foolish combat wheelchair? It completely assumes that people who are disabled can't make a character with mobility or want to play a disabled character in the game to mirror real life. These sorts of changes only serve to stifle creativity and not advance the medium.
@Galanthos
@Galanthos 2 жыл бұрын
@Geoffrey Chauvin This kind of thing doesn't bother me at all. Tabletop games, to me, have always been an intensely personal affair, and ignoring 90% of what "the industry" is doing to focus on what's happening at my home table has always been the way of things. I don't see what the ulterior motive behind pointing out racist tropes or inclusive fiction is. Like, it is helpful to know that a Dwarven preoccupation for gold is a Jewish stereotype, not because "Hey, no more dwarves," but to understand why certain things about dwarves are the way they are so that you can make intelligent decisions about how you want your dwarves to be. And the rules don't say "Hey, if you're in a wheelchair you have to play a battle wheelchair character," but having an option where a player can create a character more closely resembling themselves IF THAT IS SOMETHING THEY WANT TO DO is great. Maybe a battle wheelchair is silly, but, I mean, is it really sillier than Gnomish Power Armor made out of old barrels and steam engines? Or outer space Football Hooligans whose cars go faster when they paint them red? Or Spelljammer? I don't see theae things as "ulterior motives." These are just motives. People want to play games they want to play, and if the game doesn't have something they want to play, they try and make that thing. That's how games get made. And you can always say "Sorry, at my table we don't have the Battle Wheelchair because it does not fit in to the theme of our game. Also, we think these monkey guys are cool, so we still use them."

@@geoffreychauvin1474 Main reason the medium was failing for a bit. Now we have wonderful options to pick from by people who have a passion for the hobby and don't force crap from real life cults into the game. It is objectively harder to play a game of D&D now without bigots outing themselves by claiming orcs represent black people when the setting has actual black people than it used to be. Nothing says "I'm a racist" like someone claiming a monster represents a real life race. Luckily we have many options now that don't place this kind of woke garbage in the book and take up 2-20 pages with dumb crap in an attempt to hide their own bigotry by projecting it onto society.

@@Galanthos maybe it's not so much in tabletop bc it's small groups of close knit friends playing but at least from the standpoint of video games, I have basically checked out of being part of any online gaming community because no one ever gate kept out people who didn't want to play the games as they were but wanted to come in and dictate what the game should be to suit them. I honestly preferred when gaming was a niche hobby and not the huge industry it has become for just this reason.

For me it's Legend of Legaia, as Hidenori Shibao has long since passed away and it just wouldn't be the same without him. A remaster or remake would simply be a bastardization of the original product. Final Fantasy IX already has been ported to PC (people argue against me that it was not remastered-- I distinctly remember the trailers for the PC port calling it a remaster, then they dropped that term somewhere along the line) which is fine albeit with many flaws, but I would hate to see it remade. I love FFIX the most out of every FF, and I just do not want to see it remade because I don't trust Squeenix at all. Anyway I'm happy to see some serious talk about indie rpgs from outside the indie dev community. Indies really do seem to be moving ahead of AAA developers, don't they?

Same on Xenogears, but I have an additional reason: the main thing people say they'd like to see in a remake is for the game to be complete, but I couldn't disagree more. The story is about feeling incomplete and the game itself ending up that way really made it hit home. If Disc 2 was any way other than it is I honestly don't think I'd have liked the game as much. Also, Xeno isn't just Takahashi's. His wife Soraya Saga was just as fundamental to it, Xenogears (and saga) are equally hers. Unfortunately, most people seem to only know her as "Takahashi's wife" and not the person who conceptualized about half of the game.

An easy tactical Jrpg id recommend is the Disgaea 1 Remake. Its a great game with a solid, albeit silly story with a fantastic cast. 40-60h for the main game & so much more end game if you want to do it. I agree that indie game have been crushing it the past several years, really really fun, unique games coming out, almost too many.

With these old games getting remakes, I wish there would always be a port/remaster of the original available on same platform. Sometimes, more often than not, the remakes butcher the look and feel of the original! Even with HD-2D, I think it's no replacement of the classic pixel art, as nice as it looks.

Remasters are a double edged sword in bringing new attention to old series and taking away resources for sequels. Eiyuden vs Suikoden will be an interesting comparison on that score. Also the best rpg for someone not wanting a commitment has to be legend of the seven stars. It's brief and much friendlier than most rpgs if you're new to the genre.

The problem with Tactics games, for me, is that hardly anyone even makes them anymore. And, even the people that do make them, put them on a shoestring budget. Add on top of that, the fact that so many of them just use a "Visual Novel scene -> Battle -> Visual Novel scene -> Battle" cycle, with no exploration whatsoever. If there were more of them, with a higher budget, and that played like any other full RPG outside of battle, it would be my favorite genre.

I would love to see a Xenogears/Saga remaster. In fact, it's my most desired continuation... want so badly to see the rest of that story told. Though I hope it wouldn't be censored beyond recognition for modern sensibilities (heck, some scenes in Xenosaga already were, and incredibly stupidly.) And agreed that indies are the ones pushing innovation. And for that matter crowd funding... although there are disaster stories, there is a huge list of incredible games only made possible by that.

Liked it as a kid but boy o boy replaying it as a adult is way more awesome because the story is really something (I am a FF6 guy but the story in Tactics wayy more solid) and you can read lots of lore somewhere in the game (dont remember the name of the place though) that as a kid you dont really care but taking the time to read it is just a great thing to day if you want to know more about the 50 years war and all that !

I'm fine with remastering games, as long as the original is still available as well, preferably in the same package. Most of the games getting this kind of consideration are super tiny games for platforms which are already well emulated. Part of what makes a remaster/remake interesting is the contrast with the original work. Take that away, and you're removing both the history and any way to truly understand what's going on with the game. And definitely give Shining Force II a go. It's like the first game, but much more polished. I would also recommend the Disgaea games. They're just lighthearted anime goofy fun, and you don't need to do anything beyond the main story.
