I'm certain Konami is doing this to capitalise off the hype surrounding Eiyuden has been getting, but at the same time this could really help Eiyuden. Say the remasters come out before Eiyuden and people really enjoy the games they;d be more willing to give Eiyuden a chance.. Or if Konami really screw up the remasters, Eiyuden is there for people who were disappointed.

Maybe we can help Murayama become so successful that he can just buy the Suikoden ip from Konami if he wants and make an actual Suikoden VI, or pick up where he left off after 3. To me, this isn't a bad thing. Sure, I think it's pretty undeniable that this is a response to Eiyuden's success, but that's just how things wrok. Businesses react, and honestly, I'm happy this happened. That just means more to enjoy. I never wanted Eiyuden to fill the hole of Suikoden, but become its own entity that reminds me of Suikoden, still hoping the series would return. I dunno, I just can't be upset this is happening. More of good things is never going to be a bad thing to me. Also, Konami has shown interest in Suikoden for years. Their 50th anniversary artwork, that one survey they did YEARS AGO asking fans what franchises fans are interested in, the Konami shop with Suikoden merch; this reveal was far, far from a surprise to me. To me, it's inevitable that things come back. Everything comes back. If Monster Ranchaer came back, I was pretty damn sure Suikoden would too. I would have been shocked of it didn't. Also, Junko Kawano came back. I just don't think it's as malicious as some make it seem. Competition will only further a medium as beloved as gaming. And I can't see this hurting either side at all. Eiyuden was already a success, and I'm sure it'll continue to be.

I appreciate you spitballing some things on this subject because there is a lot to say about this remaster and Eiyuden's eventual release. I'm not a big fan of Konami anymore but they use to be absolutely amazing from a game creation standpoint. Suikoden is definitely being revived due to the AMAZING kickstarter for Eiyuden. Konami had to have looked at that and saw dollar signs in their eyes immediately. I do believe the Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters will be a staging ground for Konami as to what to do with the franchise. I'd bet they sell really well considering how beloved the games are (well, most of them anyway). If that in fact does happen, I'm hoping they consider a Suikoden 6, though they would have score a major coup by getting Muriyama and Kiwano back if they wanted to do it right. Eiyuden is gonna do great, it looks so fun and beautiful but I do wonder exactly when the Suikoden remaster drops. If its before Eiyuden that could actually help Eiyuden sell even more copies. Thanks again Derek 🙂

I agree. But either way I’m glad it’s happening. While it’s almost a sure thing that this collection would not be happening without the success of the Eyuden Chronicle campaign, it now opens the door for countless new people to discover suikoden. And whatever feeling the original creators have, I have to believe they recognize and are happy that their work has a new chance to touch people.

I think Konami is trying to turn a new leaf while at the same time make money off old IP. I'm not even mad because these classics should be remade and experienced by a new generation while at the same time affordable for people that dont want to spend absurd money on a physical copy. I'm hopeful that with sales from this and TMNT will keep them on this path of remakes and remasters, as well as rebooting entire franchises. I'd love to play a new Silent Hill on the ps5.

If people don’t have to pay over $300 for Suikoden 2 or over $100 for Suikoden 1 and this makes these classics widely available for generations of gamers then I don’t see the issue personally as it just means we get the classics and a new indie game by the original so that’s just more choice. Companies do this all the time so it’s not something I’m surprised by Konami doing this but at the same time Konami has BEEN rereleasing their bigger titles from Contra to Castlevania to even Silent Hill so it only made sense for them to rerelease Suikoden.

I had the same thoughts about the timing of it. I fell in love with the Suikoden series and had been hoping that it will be revived and continued. I am glad, excited, and conflicted when I saw the remaster announcement in TGS. Konami could be testing the waters and see how the remastered version will be received. What I hear from a friend is that the dev team has been really passionate and hyped about these remasters, posting daily updates and showing their enthusiasm. What I think happened is that this particular dev team has been pitching this for a while and they saw an opportunity with the release of eiyuden. I agree with this opinion and I had the same reaction when I first heard of the remasters, yeah, Konami's reasons for accepting the pitch are absolutely dubious, but my friend convinced me this is absolutely worth a look still. I can dissociate the dev team from the money driven decision of the execs. Am a superfan of suikoden 2, it's my favorite jrpg of all time and probably my favorite game. Still more hyped for eiyuden tho. ;)

Loved hearing your views on this, and I also enjoyed going over all your Suikoden reviews ^^ From the POV of someone who hadn't got into the series but had heard of it online over the years, and after seeing the remaster announcement has decided to play through the games, I'm actually very happy to see such a series maybe have a mini-revival! Even if it's just bringing all the Suikoden games (and maybe the PSP one translated!) to modern consoles and bringing in both old and new fans! The timing is definitely dodgy though and everyone is right to still side-eye Konami, though I suppose this is the perfect timing for them (but I hope everyone who plays Suikoden and loves it will also support Eiyuden Chronicle, I know I will) due to what you said about them using the kickstarter success as a way to have someone else gauge interest for them... but if the end result is fans getting Suikoden back and potentially bringing the series much more attention again/a brand new Suikoden if sales for the remasters go well (even if it doesn't hit the highs of the previous games as I've seen people concerned about, I'd rather an uncertain future than no games ever), it's the best result imo. Subbed!

I can understand why you'd be conflicted. My advice to anyone is play both, but if you can only pay for one make it Eiyuden. Do just remember that it's incredibly difficult to quit a company job in Japan. All major companies (and most of the smaller ones) only ever hire fresh graduates - quitting means risking literally never ever getting another job. So it's possible not all the workers are on board. I felt the same way with The Cowabunga Collection. On one hand I was excited because these are games from my childhood and it really looked like they were treating the games respectfully. But at the same time, we had Shredders Revenge, rather than a remaster, more of a love letter to those games, and I had to think, okay is this just a great year for the Turtles? Or is the CC cashing in on the love and effort of the SR team? Ultimately, for Suikoden, I hope this is Konami seeing the interest that Eiyuden has drummed up for that style of game and using the 1+2 Remaster as a test to see if there truly is a market for it. I’m sure both will succeed, and hopefully this leads to remasters of the other games, or perhaps a new entry in the series.

For some reason, I am willing to give them a shot and support this as much as I can. A lot of people have dismissed Konami a long time ago, but by supporting projects and releases like this, they may reconsider and rebuild their dev studios. It reminds me of when they allowed the export of the newer white Dance Dance Revolution Ace machines from Japan and even licensed western music to sweeten their worldwide release. If this continues, Konami will soon be in the same position as Square Enix (releasing underrated remasters but also has a CEO that’s all in on NFTs, plus the Balan Wonderworld kerfuffle). And hopefully move past them, but that’s a pipe dream.

And I don't see the problem with that, it is a company, and that's a strategy business. As a company you must make use of the better strategy to earn profit, a company that generates jobs, and people work...precisely for a payment, and that strategy at least tries to ensure the possibility of success of their product, in this case, Suikoden Remasters. I don't see Konami using the "hype" of Eiyuden any different than Eiyuden riding on the Suikoden nostalgia and name to sell, otherwise they wouldn't be reminding you in every trailer and corner that the game is made by the Suikoden team, or that it is a Suikoden Spiritual Successor. The remasters possibly wouldn't have happened without Eiyuden (possibly), but neither Eiyuden would have happened without Suikoden in the first place.

If people support squares shotty remasters, this should be a no Brainer because they actually put effort into them.

I've never played Suikoden but if a company decided to finally remaster one of my old favorites that I had been waiting ages for...I wouldn't consider it the ideal time to punish them for their past sins. Unless perhaps the og creator came out and said that he didn't like it or that they were bastardizing his work or something. Or maybe they'd be happy that a whole new generation gets to play them. Dunno but I can see why you'd feel conflicted about it.

Hello there! In my own humble opinion, I like the Suikoden series but not Konami, I mean not anymore after letting us hang for more than a decade or two. Is this their redemption arc from them? Maybe, but I will not bank on them until I see a solid performance. Are they capitalizing on the success of Eiyuden Chronicle's kickstarter...80-90% probably yes! I will be getting the Suikoden HD remaster just because I just love this series. As to whether I will support Konami in the future after the release of Suikoden remaster remains to be seen. Also, one of the interviews during TGS, they mentioned that they are interested in doing another Suikoden in the future...I am a skeptical as to this will be the case because the "support" they mention is banking on the success of this remaster...so that's a big question mark for me. But on a positive note, I'm not quite sure if I heard or read it right somewhere but the one in-charge for this remaster was the one in-charge for Suikoden 5(?). If that is the case, I think the remaster will be in good hands...well maybe ^__^;; As for Eiyuden Chronicles, I backed this game last 2020 and the recent trailer has hyped me for next year's release! Will totally support Rabbit and Bear for Eiyuden!

I don't think it's fair to judge the employees who have stayed with Konami through years. In Japan it isn't as easy for people to switch employers as in the US, it's generally looked down upon and seen as a reflection of your work ethics and commitment when you do so other companies aren't inclined to just hire you. Unless you have the resources to go solo it's usually career suicide. Also Konami is definitely not strapped for cash but they're absolutely riding the Eyuden Chronicles wave. With that said, I think these remakes look amazing and meticulously well made, they didn't take the HD2D gimmicky route but instead fully reworked the backgrounds to match the Suikoden style so the sprites fit in perfectly.

I am a little perplexed as to why Konami is labeling the games as "remasters" when one looks at comparison videos, it shows clearly that 99% of the games graphics are completely re-rendered and re-drawn, thus this seems to me more of *REMAKE* of Genso Suikoden I & II; a "remaster" tends to be just a upscale with minor graphical clean-up, maybe a few Quality of Life features added... Like SquareEnix's Legend of Mana recent re-release is an *HD Remaster* but it's environs haven't been re-rendered, and Chrono Cross was a HD remaster, and only the polygonal characters were re-rendered, but like 98% of the game is the same as the original... yes Konami is bringing back Suikoden for profit, that much is obvious....

My thoughts exactly! At first glance it feels like a mere cashgrab from Konami, realizing the huge success Eiyuden had as a kickstarter campaign. On the other hand I hold a tiny hope, that both the remaster of Suikoden 1+2 AND Eiyuden can be successful which MIGHT lead to Konami hiring Rabbit&Bear Studios to do the next Suikoden Series entry.. slim hope but MAN I would be amazed!

I can't wait for both. I backed Eiyuden on Kickstarter and Suikoden is my favorite series ever. The original Suikoden was THE reason I bought a PS1 back when I was in high school. I still own all of my physical copies of the Suikoden games. I am so excited for next year, it will be amazing for Suikoden fans. I have no doubt that people who would buy Eiyuden would simply buy the remasters along with it, I don't think it would still a single actual purchase from Eiyuden. It will probably be the opposite, new people will try Suikoden and fall in love, and then find out about Eiyuden.

Cash grab or not, Suikoden is a beloved cult classic JRPG series that has been missed by fans for so long and deserves to be experienced all over again. If there's one thing that F@$knami has been doing right lately, it's remastering old games. Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Castlevania Requiem, Contra Anniversary Collection & most recently Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection have all been amazing fun quality compilations and hopefully Suikoden 1 & 2 will be no different. Fans who love Suikoden will still check out Eiyuden Chronicles and also fans who play & enjoy Eiyuden will in turn be curious to check out the original that inspired it Suikoden. There's an interview with Koji Igarashi(creator of Castlevanias after SOTN) where he states that he became known as the guy who "Creates games with very little money" within Konami, he also said that symphony of the night was created at the best of times with a team of 19 people at most. There's a lot of evidence of crunch with the silent hill franchise, as well as with Metal Gear Solid, so yeah I totally agree that Konami have mostly been a piece of shit to their artists. Its a pretty tough spot as a consumer because I truly am excited for this remaster, but to a point it's almost like supporting Blizzard after all the shit they've gone through with bad stuff from the higher ups, my good side says don't support them, fuck em and pirate the game, but my bad side says "bUy teH c0llectoRz EditioNnnnn 0n pr3order!". I'm kinda the same. I'm wondering if this will (now that Konami is doing the remasters) spark Sony to make remasters for Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts, after doing exactly the same to Wild Bunch Studios and Yukikaze. The trend of telling developers no, they go to make their own thing, make remasters to capitalise on their success without them being a part of it. I really hope that won't be the case.

Konami's re-releases have been pretty solid lately, unlike square. As far as the Kojima-Konami feud goes, its all dickish-developer vs. asinine-publisher and I couldn't have cared less about the blood feud those two had. If I had worked with Hideo Kojima's ego for decades there would come a time in which I would be done with his bullshit too. This video is way to "Won't someone think of the indie devs?!" They're going to be okay, they have Microsoft money and they own the IP they're making, not a publisher. I get it, its fun to trash Konami because some things that their CEO said that damaged their brand considerably, we all do it. However, there is nothing wrong with them having their eyes opened by the Market. They saw Castlevania was popular on Netflix... BAM! Castlevania games get re-released. Contra's having an anniversary coming up? Re-release Contra. Eiyuden Chronicles becomes the 3rd highest kickstarted videogame of all time? We should remaster our Suikoden games while the hype is there, they might even sell better as re-releases than they did as new releases! Kojima said he hates re-releases and remasters? Fuck that asshole, remake or remaster all his games and take his name off the covers just to trigger that egomaniac!

If you have a strong emotional attachment to a game it can be hard to see it treated as a commodity by cynical finance and marketing people who're only seeing bottom lines. I think it's true though that whenever something becomes successful and starts generating enough money, it inevitably ends up "corrupted" in the sense that there's suddenly so much money involved you can't really afford to consider any other aspect. In other words they would never remaster a game simply because it would be the right thing to do out of respect for the fans or the ip. Releasing this in the wake of the Eiyuden hype is just a smarter move than trying to get people hyped for a Suikoden remaster on its own. Perhaps these releases can feed off each other, meaning more people will play the Suikoden remasters because of Eiyuden and vice versa. One thing I'm wondering about though is how many will be newcomers and how many will be old fans. As an old Suikoden fan who started out with Suikoden 1 back in 1997, it's easy to get the impression that no one cares about Suikoden except fans who have followed the franchise since the beginning.

You support companies as bad or worse than Konami. I agree with your points, but thanks to capitalism all of these companies are tearing there way through artistic projects to turn a profit all while underpaying, overworking and in some cases literally abusing their workers. Yeah, I agree. The remasters look great so far, and the Suikoden Revival Movement worked so hard for this moment.... but Konami ignored us until Murayama, Kawano et al did the heavy lifting to restart our dreams. Was on a gaming site the other day that had the Suikoden and Eiyuden news side by side, and was shocked to see more comments on the Suikoden article. Maybe just a reflection of their readers, or the unexpected nature of the announcement evoked more comments. But it made me a little sad. Konami did hire Kawano to do the art, and have her appear on their panel, so maybe they anticipated sentiment like yours and are trying to head it off. But for that matter, I'm not Suikoden's story could be properly continued (no more prequels and side stories please!) without the original creators - and even if they parted amicably, would they even want to be under Konami again after the last several decades? I dunno...
