@@JM-lh8rl no to become a doctor in a lot of countries you FIRST need an undergraduate degree. Which means you get a university degree first. THEN you can apply for med school and try to get in. I have Crohn’s disease and had chronic flare ups from 2nd grade-7th grade, I was malnourished and throwing up every night, and had horrible diarrhea. My mom blamed random shit like my ADHD medicine, picky eating and staying up too late so it took super long to even get tested. I was iron deficient and my doctor thought I had an eating disorder. My dad got to the point where he would make me go to school even when I was sick and would tell me to wake up every night to throw up so I wouldn’t accidentally throw up on the carpet. It was so bad, I literally can’t remember anything except my disease for most of my childhood. When I wasn’t getting sick, I was being force fed food because my parents were just doing their best to help me not die from malnutrition. Luckily I got diagnosed in 7th grade and I have been doing great since then! I’m sharing this story because I think Crohn’s disease is very overlooked by a lot of people, there is a lot of misinformation in the world, and it usually goes undiagnosed for a very long time.

While "just studying" (reading, rewriting, flashcards etc.) was what I mainly did in Biomed, Maths FORCES me to think actively as we have weekly assignments neccessary for being allowed to the final exam. I personally think career paths such as medicine require a lot more discipline, while others like maths require more focus and interest (Not offending). I got decent grades, but I would have preferred to study all year. The problem with that was that as soon as I started to invest my time in studying, I got worse at getting my homework done. Since homework was more urgent, I decided that the only thing to do was focus on doing my homework, and wait until days before the exam to study. The bit about alcohol has fourth and probably more insidious negative outcome - developing alcoholism. Which can start from "social drinking" or "stress relief." There's a certain point where it will be a problem, and it's important to be mindful of that. I do believe the first red flag on the road to alcoholism is not being constantly blackout drunk or hungover (it's just the most obvious red flag)... but the moment your drinking to cope with stress becomes a pattern. And given family history, it's enough to make me a teetotaler, in all honesty.

So I studied only biology and chemistry. I got into medschool but the las year was so hard for me... probably harder than first year of medschool. The problem was that I wasn't used to studying that much. I had no techniques, it was hard to focus and only during the first year of medicine I learnt how to learn. If you had a pre-existing infection with Campylobacter (for example) and psychological stress caused a reduction in the migratory motor complex this could have increase the levels of the toxins and antibodies which pushed over the threshold necessary to be considered Chrone's Disease. That is just one model of how such a thing could happen. But, I wouldn't necessarily emphasize the stress component if that had any role at all.

Thank you for the video. Really heart-felt some of the points. But I was wondering how you made through college with all those mistakes? Like...wouldn't someone be dead due to so much stress, sleep-deprivation, and self-injuries?

I am kind of worried now too because I am trying to major in Pre-med to be a dentist, but I always get myself into a ton of stress just because of a tiny event that happened.

it is always good to finish medical school before you have these realizations.

you are lucky. i was taken via ambulance after found blacked out in my dorm room in a pile of my own puke - thank GOD it was early morning and she heard me thud to the ground. first i had to be carried to the health services by the university security; i had bled so bad internally that my bp was just crashing. at the health center, the nurse confirmed i was bleeding out the ... part you don't want to be bleeding from and called an ambulance. despite being taken to the hospital via ambulance FROM university health services, nearly every teacher kicked me out of their classes (this was a little more than halfway into the semester). i can't write more than that yet because i have developed such horrible CPTSD after being bullied as a young child which exploded when i started to become so ill ... the things people said and did to me were not only unethical but absolute HELL. to be kicked out of class because i was hospitalized BY DIRECTION OF THE SCHOOL for a week (i did lose consciousness in the ambulance bc my bp just crashed due to the internal bleeding). i would never wish the things i have had done and saiid to me on anyone. i didn't realize it would be such a long and incredibly arduous decade before things started to improve .... but yeah. you're very lucky in that regard. you were given a choice; i was not. and the disability services at the school wouldn't even help me ... yeah, i have to stop because i'm going to start triggering myself.... you are, however ... on a slightly different note ... also very fortunate because one of my good friends with crohn's has been so ill and she is so young. she has literally failed EVERY SINGLE DRUG USED TO TREAT HER DISEASE ... when i last talked with her, she was trying to work with the doctors in hopes of reversing the emergency colostomy they had to do on her 2+ years ago. when that was performed / leading up to that, she caught SO MANY nosocomial infections including GI CMV. as a result of the severity of her disease and her options for treatment very literally running out, she was committed to an inpatient mental facility. although i have never done that, i can understand how that can happen. i had run out of options aside from thalidomide (who wants to take thalidomide?!?!) until the il-6 inhibitors came along and saved my life and actually restored some of my vision. i am still on a LOT of medication. at any rate, you were somehow very fortunate not to land in my friend's position; she is now waiting to see what the biopsy results showed because the doctors were afraid to reverse the aforementioned procedure because of the massive scarring the internal lesions / ulcers had left. i pray for her every day (and i am not particularly religious, but spiritually, i do). my classmates in university always said stuff like "i'll sleep when i'm dead!" i think largely as a means of displacing the knowledge that they had to work 20/24 hours a day EVERY DAY into something that "made sense." my answer to these people was "yeah, but if you're so exhausted you can't enjoy anything ... what's the point??" this was before i got SICK SICK. again, i would really like to know how you could work so hard throughout school and after and not have crohn's keep you - at best - in hospital for 6+ months.... and again, hahahaha! oh my GOD this was not my college experience. back in ye olden days we had really unhealthy but delicious places in the school basement so we could sneak off and grab some greasy fries or whatever else while we were working straight through the night ... and this was sophomore year. again ... i think i must have some kind of extraordinary and very unusual university experience???? i still am not very good at studying because if i re-copy notes i have already written, i have a 99%+ chance of remembering it. still, if you have to spend 20 hours for a few days writing code, read 500-800 pages a day FOR ONE LITERATURE CLASS, etc., there is NO WAY you can get through without sleep deprivation! i know it was the kind of "personal joke" that cs majors wouldn't leave the computer labs for weeks so they ordered pizza ... and as sad as that is, it was very true. okay, one more QUICK question (i promise!) - how do you SCHEDULE in advance when you have NO IDEA how you're going to feel when you wake up?!?! anyone with serious systemic chronic illness knows the "spoon theory" (thus my name here and elsewhere!); and you have no idea even if you slept straight through for 10 hours if you're even going to be able to get out of bed or not. add in seizures (aaaah, seizures! and things like GI problems and other euro-problems ...) ... just ... HOW?!?!?! i can tentatively make appts but anyone with whom i am making appointments is well aware that there is a fairly good chance that i will have to reschedule. that's just how life with severe autoimmune and auto-inflammatory illnesses are! so please ... HOW HOW HOW?!?!
