Another word you could use to ask someone to repeat something, that sounds less rude than "que?", is "como?". And also of course in Mexican Spanish, the most common thing to say when you didn't hear or understand clearly what someone said, is "mande".

The first time I had huaraches was in a Mexican restaurant which the owners were from DF the Capitol of Mexico. They looked like a foot, so when I looked up the word huaraches I wasn’t surprised it said “sandals.” In Huatulco, Oaxaca they weren’t as good but I bet in the Capitol of Oaxaca named Oaxaca they are better since I heard the food there is really great! ❤

When I was learning Spanish in college, my professor used to say “¿Repita?” if he didn’t understand what we said. We also learned “¿Cómo?”, which is what I saw in the textbook, “Poco a Poco”.

We usually say "¿cómo?" (meaning 'how?') to mean 'what?' (¿Qué?). You know, it's the short form for "¿cómo dices?" (which's better to translate as 'what do you say/mean?').

They could have asked that because they understood the action, but not the object. For example, if you said "me gusta correr/el helado" (I like running/ice-cream), if I get the first part ("me gusta") but I don't understand what you said afterwards, I would either ask "qué cosa (te gusta)?", and I'm not from Panama. Maybe it's something that they use to say, or maybe it was that kinda confusion, do you remember the context?

I remember a Spanish class many many years ago taught by a Cuban young lady and she taught us that qué sounds rude and is not polite and it is better to use cómo. I'm not sure if that is the way it is now but that has stayed with me all these years, 46 más o menos! So I always use cómo. Is this correct? I remember at that time, mid 70's, when I was in Mexico and tried to speak with a young and apparently a rich spoiled Mexican princess that she didn't understand my poor Spanish skills and kept saying qué in a rude way and looking at her friends and laughing. So qué still seems rude to me.

It depends on the country, I guess. I'm from Venezuela, and we say qué when we don't understand. It's informal, not rude. I guess in a more formal situation I might say perdón, cómo dijiste o puedes repetir, por favor. I had Asturians friends that said cuál instead of qué o cómo
