My issues with my 2006 330i (all happened between 90-120K miles): 1) Cracked head bolt (!!!) causing a massive oil leak. Bad metallurgy or factory torque setting. 2) 3 cracked bolts on the oil pan, causing another leak. Another factory defect. Big $$ labor cost. 3) Cracked bolt on the tensioner. 3) Valve cover leak. 4) 3 failed ignition coils . 5) Failed AC compressor .

Thats a bit weird. On the forums in my country the N52 is being hated because of the excessive oil consumption and the vanos issues. N53 seems to fix the issue with the oil consumption. Yes, you have the issues with the injectors and hpfp but it seems better overall.

@gilgonzalez59023 жыл бұрын
@@kevinlowry7608 with the 335 you have to be careful because the N54 was not very reliable and neither was the first year of the N55 (2011) so if its not a 2012 and up 335 then id go for the 328 which is EXTREMELY reliable albeit less powerful than the 335.

I have a 525i LCI with an N53, i've never driven one with an N52, but my car has been extremely reliable ever since i bought it in february. Cahnged the oil and filters myself, used Shell Helix 5W-30 and i only fill it up with V-Power. Hasn't missed a beat! Best car i've ever had.
@xcofcd4 жыл бұрын
Shell Helix is a good oil but I'd always use a 0W40 or 5W40 and change it every 10-15,000km. To say it very simple the ...W30 oils all have a purposely reduced shear stability by specification. The focus of all these W30 and W20 oils is fuel efficiency over wear protection. Also they have special additives to make the oil "thinner". These additives break over time in the engine and leave sludge behind. That's why you never see an engine that was driven with W30 longlife oil and longlife change intervals that doesn't have brown sludge in the engine.
@Makjeh4 жыл бұрын
I've now driven 10,000km with this oil so i'm going to change it very soon anyway, and because the cold winter is coming up (it gets very very cold where i live) i don't really want to go for a thicker oil for the winter, but i might try it next summer, i know that 5w40 works just fine with this engine too.

My son got an 08 328i with the 6 spd manual for $3,500 about 6 months ago. 180k miles, but Super clean inside and out, black on black with window tint. Great service records (all common failure points done), well maintained, 2 owner car, clean Carfax. He had to jump all over the listing, responded within hours and after we bought it the guy said he had multiple others who wanted it. I think he got a great deal, because I keep an eye on the market as I’m thinking about a 335i with the N54 as a fun car (I daily a 4Runner) and I don’t see anything near that price on E90/N52’s that isn’t beat up. Got an OBD2 scanner w/BMW software that has come in handy. So far have done the battery and starter; transmission and diff fluid changes. Had bolts come loose on the power steering pulley which caused the serpentine belt to rub/tear and proceeded to rip the wiring on the radiator fan, he caught it before it completely shredded the belt though (and potentially avoided the ensuing engine grenading). DIY on all those maintenance/repairs so about $600 (thanks FCP Euro), instead of several thousand $ at a shop. He also put on angel eye headlamp units and blacked out grill and side markers, which makes it look even sharper. Power isn’t crazy but it’s fine for having fun on the backroads. Handles great for spirited driving (compared to domestic/Japanese sedans in that price range). It’s not N54/55 power/fun/modability, but the N52 appears to be a very solid/reliable engine for fun daily driving and not nearly as much maintenance needed as the turbo engines. A lot of car for the money, as long as you’re willing to DIY most maintenance and repairs. Bilstein B8’s and lowering springs might be the next project.

BMW ancillary components fail from the N52 era cars but the engine itself is solid. 106k miles and still feels and sounds silky smooth and pulls strong. Match a manual with an automatic differential and the gearing is also spot on.

Of course I love the N54 but the 328xi with the N52 was my first experience with BMW and that engine and car is what made my love for BMW concrete. LOVE these engines! (Also I got an rx7 fb and are currently measuring the engine bay to see how much I'd have to cut to fit an N52 out of a 330i into the rx7. Call it an impure build but the n52 is not much heavier than a 12A and it produces much more power, much more reliably than a 12A. That's if it'll fit lol)

5 years ago a friend had twins, that meant 2nd and 3rd infant seats in the car. Didn’t work in his 2005 325xi 6-speed manual built in Munich and adapted for US. So I bought it off him for $8k with 85k miles on it. It’s at 145k mi today. Love this car, sooooo fun to drive!

I'm in love with my N52. 2006 330i. $4700 for the car + $1500 in parts and a few weekends of my time and this thing surprised the hell out of me! So fun to drive around as a daily and not a single leak after a gasket and fluid refresh. With proper maintenance I don't think this thing will ever give up. 170,000 miles on the clock and I'd cruise this thing cross country and not think twice about it.

Mine E60 N52 engine 2007, 100.000 Kms, no problems at all except at 85.000 Kms a long start and unstable idle for a few minutes only during the first start in the morning, after checking fuel rail press drop and fuel injectors for static leaks I removed and cleaned both vanos solenoids, it improved around 80%, I replaced both solenoids (BMW genuine not cheap Chinese parts) and the problems went away. No oil leaks at all, very happy with this engine.

had a big scare in my n52 yesterday, Just took the ramp onto the motorway and accelerated up to red-line and then Poof Engine stalled, Power steering gone, Hazards and SES light on. pulled over and checked for Smoke or oil and it looked good, Started back up no problems and no strange sounds. Went home and checked INPA, No Codes....!. Been driving it around today pushing red-line and no stalls. Gonna change the oil and check for flakes and do an ignition service as well as change intake filter. Keeping my fingers crossed its not the fuel pump or something internal.

Philaroo Happened to me recently too, although I got CEL showing misfire. For me it was dirty oil after changing the CCVV that clogged the vanos and non return valves. I gave those a clean and put new oil in and now she feels sharp and sprightly again.

Having owned a 330Ci MY2000 from 53000km to 100,000km I found that I was getting MANY issues that should NEVER happen on a properly designed product. Plastics failing on the engine, seals failing, bearings failing, sensors failing, endless issues and this was on a perfect car that had been if anything over-serviced. Beware. There is a reason why you can buy a low mileage EURO car for almost pocket-money. Sure it was a superb car, the best of over 40 I have owned (which included an 8 year old Rolls Royce). But you have to prepared for continual maintenance - OK if you can do it yourself, they are great to work on and parts are very reasonably priced. But if you have to pay a workshop to do this work they are really un-affordable to many people.

All myself (thanks to KZbin). Now I'm sitting at 153k. Never had any issues aside for a new Valve Cover, Plugs and Coils. But that's normal maintenance. I'm happy with mine too.

@@McDeathCraft that's the potential beginning of all the classic stuff. All the ones I looked at had ofhg leaks (real bad, intake manifold SOAKED), power steering res leak, vcg leak, soaked vanos, super loud lifter ticks, rough idles, misfires at cold start, one already had lower oil pan gasket leak (apparently real common), coolant system issues, (water pump, thermostat, flange), the crank pulley/harmonic balancer I think was gonna fly off 1 I saw lol. Super long crank on cold start. Battery cable recalls, blower motor wiring recalls (on some). Dr Dean here goes over all this & more...he's got EVERYTHING spelled out on this engine on this channel. That's personally all the stuff I saw on examples around 70k mi.
