I haven't really heard about the Idea of VALVe selling the game. That would be downright insane, given how much of a cultural influence it has had on gaming and VALVe's reputation. Definitely more likely for them to ship development. I've heard a lot more discussion about shipping development to another studio similar to how VALVe handles CSGO. In CSGO's case, the studio "Hidden Path" does the development while valve does promotions and possibly manages major content updates. Why valve doesn't do the same for TF2 is anyone's guess. Personally, I think the TF2 community would react differently depending on what studio was handed the rights to TF2 development. The two most popular choices, IIRC, are Hidden Path (developers for CSGO) and Bad Robot (They created the passtime gamemode).

Oh my god mom i'm in a youtube bideo!1!1!!1 In all seriousness though, I don't really think anybody would be qualified to do something with TF2, with the exception of perhaps the community (but even then, it doesn't take too many really stupid ideas to ruin the game, and there's plenty of bad takes out there when it comes to TF2). Simply put, Valve has a very particular way they design games, and the way their studio is run. There's a very high chance that anything added to the game by any other studio wouldn't feel like TF2, wouldn't feel like Source. Of course this very particular way they design games is one of the factors causing the game to have gone many years without any major updates, but while this is inherently a bad thing, obviously, the fact is the current TF2 is well playable, and there isn't too many things that completely break the balance of the game (with some notable exceptions...) Not to mention in more recent times bugfixes for the things that do actually cause issues have been made, and even things like vscripting breathing new life into the map-making community. Personally, I don't think TF2 necessarily NEEDS a new major update. New weapons, content, and all that would be incredibly nice, and it would bring in more players, but the game is still doing just fine even without it. And plenty of mods, servers, and maps still bring in fresh new ideas in the form of community content. I think the current focus on fixing and bringing out more, better development tools for the community to have more freedom to create their own content is the right move, especially if they cannot allocate enough resources for a full-fledged update.

Valve won't sell TF2 not because Valve doesn't trust anyone we already know that. It is because Valve still makes a huge amount of money from the game via the Mann Co. store or more specifically keys and tickets. They don't have to touch the game in any major way besides bug fixing and seasonal updates because Valve knows (and correctly knows) that people will dump money into the chance of getting a rare quality hat with a cool effect.

Yeah, I would’ve touched on that subject more if I had more to add to it, but ended up scrapping because I couldn’t fit it into the script properly

I think a smaller studio would do, with the income that TF2 generates, it's easy to see that company growing, yet keeping its morals. If I had to pick a group of people to sell it to... It'd come down to either Re-Logic or Amper Software. Re-Logic is great with community contact and working with old engines, while Amper is already very familiar with TF2 and how it's made (since they are making the TFS2 project).

although i completely agree, re-logic is always going to be busy with their terraria (i swear to god they might never stop)

Good video, it would be interesting if valve did sell tf2, but they likely won't because they make too much money off of it.

I think that Valve could contract work on the game to another company; they've done it before when they had Bad Robot develop passtime. I think that Valve could easily contract out TF2 work to smaller developers and give them a list of things that need to be done like updates and such. although, with how many leaks they've experienced I doubt they are very excited to hand over the source code to yet another company. Still, it's an option that I really like. Because of how Valve works there is very little incentive for Valve employees themselves to work on the game instead of the many other cool projects they have going on. However, a small company would very happily take some money from Valve in order to work on the game. I still think this is less likely because "why pay another company to develop our game when we have very talented and highly paid developers here," but that logic requires those developers to actually be working on the game, but they rarely are. For all I know they could have 50 developers working on TF2 tirelessly and we have a major update coming out this year. I highly doubt that, but that is to say that I do not know what is going on inside of Valve. Based on the content we have gotten in recent years that doesn't seem likely, but we can never know for certain what happens. One day the old developers could decide that they all want to hop back in their office and make major content for TF2 again for old time's sake, but I wouldn't blame them if they don't do that. I definitely do not want TF2 to be sold to another company because they could very easily ruin game and not listen to the fanbase. I would honestly rather the game never get another update again than for that to happen. If the game is sold then Valve would have no more creative control over the game and would be able to do nothing if the new owners decide to completely ruin the game, the current state of the game seems preferable to that. It is also likely that the game could lose its Steam integration, which is a big driving force for TF2's popularity and its trading scene. However, there is the small chance that if Valve sold the game the new guys could never go rogue and could keep the game just the way the fans like it. I would love that but the risk is pretty high. I prefer them contracting work instead of selling the game because if they contract out the work they retain full control of the game. It is highly likely that a new company would try to squeeze as much money out of the game as possible and introduce some of the worst crap possible like games as a service, pay to win mechanics, etc.

Valve is not selling this game until everyone leaves the game since right now people are still buying keys and cosmetics from tf2 which just makes tf2 a money fishing game. ive been in many games with barely any players and saw insanely stupid costly cosmetics .

i really dont like the idea of tf2 being owned by another company. another developer working on it under valve is what i would like to see, if valve won't work on it themselves
