Oxygen itself does not burn. It causes other things to burn. When the bullet penetrates the tank, the intense heat causes the steel to burn in a similar manner to an oxy-acetylene cutting torch.

I’ve been retired for quite a while now, but I used to work at a power plant somewhere along the Mississippi River. We made a launcher with a pipe just big enough for the O2 cylinders to fit in with a piece at bottom welded on so just the valve was exposed. We could adjust the angles of the pipe for different elevation. This contraption was six stories which would’ve been around maybe twelve to fifteen normal stories high. It faced towards the river and depending on the river level it could be all water or marsh. When we would get bored we would drop a cylinder in and take a long handle maul and pop the valve off and off she went. We’d pick targets floating down the river and surprisingly we were fairly accurate. It’s no telling the number of cylinders we shot. I miss those hard days at work.

Where i stay, about 15 years ago there was an old guy who knocked scrap metal for a living. An unscrupulous scrapyard used to come and drop off gas cylinders of all different types and contents, some full some empty some in between.. Lpg, oxygen hydrogen xenon argon nitrous carbo dioxide you name it, and in every available capacity. Even two huge one ton chlorine ones. He had approximately 60 laying around his small two room house. Over a period of maybe 30 years there was maybe a thousand or so.. packed deep under the ampunt of time's accumulated garbage thrown just down the slope to a distance of maybe a hundred metres or so. Nobody knew that they were there. Anyway, some ofthe locals decided to burn the bush out to clear to plant vegetable gardens. The wind picked up and the fire turned burning wildly out of control up the hill igniting the years of garbage.. the flames were maybe 100 to 200 feet high. I could feel the heat from almost 400 meters away. Then the first cylinder exploded deep under the garbage. About ten minutes later another. Then the fire pulled up higher towards his house. Something else caught light and made almost white flames and a huge pillar cloud of thick white smoke. I sped over that direction in my car to go find him and bring him to my house. When i got closer i could hear cylinders creaking from the heat. Me and my mate grabbed him and rushed back. Then the next couple of cylinders went up blowing bush and flaming garbage all over. I called the fire dept. The fire car came out to assess the situation. I told him about all the cylinders and he looked at me incredulously asking how i know all this. My dad used to work for a large industrial gas manufacturer and i knew. He wanted to get close and i told him to keep quiet and listen. Just then a cylinder popped the valve of and took off like a corkscrew missile almost a kilometer and we heard it ring like a bell as it bounced around when it hit the ground that far away. About 50 meters from his house is a smal double story house and some of the locals were all excited and shouting Happy Diwali! Happy Diwali! We were shouting back in their dialect to get back from the windows and far away from the area. Bang. Bang. Bangbang bang then BANG clang clang and the sound of shattering glass. It went very quiet. (Next day i went to see. The bottom blew off of a cylinder opening up like a flower and like a ninja throwing star cut through 4 bars 12mm steel burglar proofing and embedded itself in the wall. Cutting one person across the upper arm to the bone.) The fire department used almost 2 and a half million litres of water to try put the fire out. In the time they were there, approximately 40 to 50 cylinders exploded. The fire burnt underground for almost 18 months after that with the occasional muffled bangs under the the still smouldering garbage. Pressure vessels are not toys...

The investigation determined that what happened was a new worker was directed to clean the gauges for an oxygen tank. The metal became the fuel. The tank was full of oxygen. Always exercise caution around oxygen tanks, if something puts enough energy into the metal to make it even spark with a puncture, the oxygen will keep the metal melting which turns into the fuel for the reaction, in this case spontaneous oxidization, or rusting, which can be exothermic in this instance.

I was handling a refrigerant bottle just like this but s little bigger. Also very flammable. We were carrying it down a ladder well (steeper than stairs) when he yells. I was at the bottom. I looked up and saw he was no longer holding the bottle. It was like a cartoon. I just thought oh crap, and the bottle began falling down the steps with me behind it. I could've let it pass me and slam into a metal wall at the bottom. But, you know, flammable. And people were around. Including a young guy who just got married to his pregnant gf. So I stayed under it and used my body as cushion when it slammed into the wall. I hit the wall, slammed my head. The bottle, going full force, slammed into my leg just above the knee, then slammed me right back into the wall. Yea, I ended up in the ER. Not a good few months afterward either.

A coworker I knew operated a plasma cutting machine sometimes cooled with LOX. He used to smoke near it. I told him it was dangerous, that the LOX could explode. He said, "No, it can't. You need fuel. LOX is an accelerant." I said, "Exactly." There's no fuel here, either, and look what happened. Explosion. Checkmate, Mike.
@saucerset12
@saucerset12 7 ай бұрын
Release of pressure is the explosion. Fire is from the spark of the bullet hitting the metal, and the gaseous oxygen fuels the fire. LOX itself is not explosive. I used to work with LOX storage tanks (repair, draining, filling, ect). In this case, the spark from the bullet is the 'fuel' and the oxygen just accelerates it. The fire extinguishes itself after the initial 'blast' because there was no more fuel to be burned so it was straight O2 coming out. Plus, these aren't LOX tanks. They are straight gaseous tanks.

@@DustinKeating-yk3vq it depends on the gun and the round, longer barrels usually equal higher velocity and penetration, since the round has more time to gain speed from the gas pushing it before exiting the rifling and hitting the air resistance, of course you can only add so much length before it starts to be a detriment, but i'm not wrong to say a longer barrel on the AK might help give it more oomph, i'm just not an AK or 7.62 expert, i just know a shortened AK when i see it
