It isn't click bait, I do get hit with a winchline. This is also the reason we run synthetic winchlines not cable. I get I was in the wrong, and watching the video I do realize I should have stood somewhere else, but real life doesn't always give you the option in the moment. Please learn from my mistake and watch where you stand when operating or being around a winchline. Also some maintenance on the wrecker, and some fun trash talking about the Tow Truck Olympics. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

After seeing the reports of flooding in Moab my first thoughts were of the Moab Motorsports crew safety. So happy to see a post this morning. Excellent advice on being to close to a winch line. Just don’t do it. Thanks for the Q&A at the end. Love the real life outtakes. Keep being you, that’s why we’re here. 👍

My sentiments too! I saw the news from Moab on KZbin last night, and my immediate reaction was how this was impacting Rory and the lads? Thankfully as it was reported that I saw, there's only been property damage and lot of clearing up to be done. Although this has hit at a bad time commercially for Moab business owners, nobody has been injured. So there's that at least to be grateful for.

@@anotherdave5107 I live in Scotland, Europe, so I only know as much as you do, but I'm sure Moab is upriver on the Colorado River from Lake Mead. So the answer is probably yes, these floods will find their way downstream to replenish the reservoir to some greater or lesser degree. I understand that it only takes a relatively small amount of water to cause flash flooding there, due to the impervious nature of sun baked soil, and the bare rock walls of the river canyons. What you'll need to find out imo, is the balance of how much water is taken by the main regional water consumers, typically agriculture & or manufacturing, from the main Colorado river, how much is also lost by accelerated drought condition evaporation, at or before the Hoover Dam itself? What are the consumer demands from further downstream, contracted by the river's water authorities?

@@edbenson98 I reckon that Rory has negated that possibility by installing synthetic fibre winch cables on all of his recovery vehicles, and uses kinetic recovery ropes that, undamaged, simply do not break, but fail safe. You'll hear all of them saying 'don't run over the rope'. A damaged the tow rope is no longer dependable. Soft shackles by Factor 55 and Yankum Ropes also fail safe, in that they do not carry any mass or energy if they do fail. Rory and his team are particularly circumspect about where and how they attach tow cables and winchlines, to avoid the possibility of parts on the customer vehicle breaking loose, catapaulting back at the recovery vehicle. Zero possibility of any customer being injured. It's their necks reputation and insurance no claims premium they're putting on the line.

It might get abused a lot, like you said, but I don't think there is another off road wrecker that can do what it does. I mean the only thing better would be one of those competition $300k-$500k rock crawlers with rear steering, & a boom on the back with a toolbox, welding machine, & a couple of huge winches. My father ran a wrecking service in the mid 70's. He was an originally an engineer that built over passes for CBI when they started building the interstates in the early 50's. He was born in 1930. For extra money his brothers & father would haul grain in the summer- time for extra money. This was in the 60's. My dad had one 3 or 5 ton gasoline powered grain truck. My uncle Noe the oldest & wealthiest 3 or 4 trucks. My other two uncles Gilbert & Joel had 2 each. By the time 1974 rolled around all big grain trucks where sitting in a field on my uncle Noe's land. So in like 1977 my dad had two 3/4 ton square body Chevy trucks, one was a 67 4x4 long bed 4 speed, it was green & white. Then he had 69 Chevy 3/4 ton short bed 2 wheel drive automatic. So he started a wrecker service. I remember him taking big axles off the grain trucks. I remember 1 of the grain trucks had a 427 truck engine with a huge 2 barrel carb. Dad put that in the 67 chevy 4x4 long bed truck, he also took a dually axle from one of the grain trucks, & put in on the back of the 67, & he moved his back axle to the front of the truck. Then he found an old wrecker & bought the rear off the back with all the hydraulic stuff & the boom. He took the long bed off. He now had a monster of a truck. This was in Brownsville Texas. He would haul vehicles that where down in the river or close to it for his friend that was a border patrol. His 69 3/4 ton Chevy shortbed, he Franken- steined also. He took the bed off & made a flatbed. Dad didn't have a lot of money, but was very smart hombre, & a mean mexican he would say, but he was actually Basque from Spain, that is where his bloodline came from. He put a dually axle under the short bed, it had 396 from my brothers old Camaro. He then put a big four speed tranny that had granny gear low plus 3 more forward speeds. He built his own boom, & the winch was on a small shrimp boat. It was still a huge hydrauluc winch for a truck. These trucks couldn't go over big boulders like your does, but nonetheless, they were work horses. I would go stay with my dad every summer. My brother Matt dropped out of the 8th grade & started junking vehicles with dad, but dad had a legitimate wrecker service, & when he was called to an accident or a truck needed to be towed out of the river dad would go. I would usually go with him unless it was a really bad wreck then he would tell me to stay home, my older brother would go. So needless to say when I first saw your offroad wrecker, I thought of my dad. He died in 2014 on Halloween, he was 84 yrs young, & lived a life most men couldn't do in 5 lifetimes. I really appreciate you & Matt's videos. Peace & Love.

Great story, brings tears over memories with my dad. He passed 7 years and a day ago. His Frankensteining wasn't as hardcore as y'all's stories, but we did have many times four wheeling in the "RC", or, Lena, as he called her. RC for, Ramcharger, a '74 he bought new back in Cleveland, where were originally from. We visited Arizona for the second time in it before we moved to Apache Junction, Arizona in '77. He swapped out the stock 318 for a modded 440, welded up his own bumpers front and rear, roll bar, and a bunch of other necessities, and custom painted metallic blue, with "Me and My RC (a spin on an old Royal Crown Cola commercial jingle), with Ram after the R and Charger after the C on the tailgate (pretty clever). Yanked out the rear seat and put in shag, swapped out the axles for something more HD. He could take off the entire roof, (the only year without the front door frame around the windows) and our family would go on treks all over Arizona while the four of us kids literally bounced around in the back - no seats, no seatbelts, lol. The locals would gather at the nearby Salt River and challenge each other up Competition Hill, or my brother and I would help hook up vehicles stuck in the nearby flooded washes during monsoon season. My mom also won first place in the local mud drags in that thing way back in the early eighties. I remember dad waking me up at midnight as a little boy back in Cleveland so that I could keep him company while he plowed parking lots and such for extra money, and we'd go have a donut and hot chocolate afterward. Or when the Brooklyn Zoo area flooded and we went out rescuing stranded people in it He was a drag racing greaser in his earlier years who loved doo-wop and classic country. Cars, trucks, guns, the outdoors and music - that was our lives - and church, after things changed from earlier, darker years. My brother and I used to work in his small auto body shop during the summers, sanding, grinding, masking, disassembling, while he barked orders, between friends stopping by to chat about everything cars, seeing what project Bob Temple was perfecting. He won AAA show car awards for paint, body, and restoration all along the west coast. My mom did the art work and cut out the stencils by hand for the murals. We lived on a rural dirt road, mostly bikers and snowbirds, and people like us - little money, but lots of friends and good times, an earlier Arizona where everything was cleaner and freer, and wide open. A feral, humble, rough, but organic and tribal existence, I wouldn't change a thing. He had us shooting his 44 Magnum Blackhawk and 30 odd 6 as early as third grade, and my mom worked some of the most undesirable jobs to help support our family of six to stay fed and clothed in our little makeshift cinder block, flat-roofed home across the street from horse boarding neighbors. His health and mobility began to wane in his late sixties after a major head-on collision out in the cotton farming region of Queen Creek after one of his off-roading excursions in the San Tans, then the medication made it even more difficult to complete the new Ramcharger build he'd been working on for years, pulling most of the good, salvageable parts from the wreckage of the RC, which my brothers and I helped chip-in on once in a while, especially my brother, Chris. This one was a '75 he'd obtained from his old friend, Terry, whom he used to work with at his welding shop, where they'd also collaborated together to be the first ones to bring the Super Swamper tires to market in AZ. My brother, Chris, has the truck now, bigger and badder, and orange, with Super Swampers and the original 440 and bumpers and such from the RC. 'Sure wish dad could've taken it out before cancer took him out, but I don't think that's even an issue in heaven now.

Now that is a quotable quote, that needs a sign at the beginning of every trail. As for the scammers, it has happened to me here, Mischief Maker TV, etc. I just report the posts to youtube and they are removed.

I don't know who's going to be there I don't know when or where but I'm definitely looking forward to the tow truck Olympics I have seen several other channels that either building a truck or has a truck I think they're going to have a real hard time dealing with Trail Mater the way that truck is set up and the experience in the skill of Rory is hard to beat

Rory, you sir have THE OG Off-road towtruck, you have already won in my opinion. Matt and Paul both have new rigs, untried but both will have potential, but until they have hundreds if not thousands of recoveries under their belts, they will not be in your class of off-road towtrucks. This means no disrespect to either of them they are obviously very good at off-road recoveries, and super nice guys, but you sir have THE Off-Road Tow Truck! The Off-Road Tow Truck Olympics will be fun to watch just the same. Cheers from downtown Tokyo!

"If you have to tell everybody you are the best, you probably are not" Rory, your discipline at holding your tongue back from what you really want to say is very impressive. I'm sure editing helps a lot. It's obvious (to me) that your abilities, especially, in the Moab trails are unsurpassed. I love Matt and Paul also, you guys are all capable of dealing with sketchy situations. Paul's build is going end up like Trail Mater in proportions. Matt's Heavy Wrecker looks like it will work for what he deals with mostly but I'm not sure it would fair well in something like the Escalator. I could be wrong. I hope the Tow Truck Olympics turns out to be more of a fun competition. I'm sure it will be as I don't see the three of you getting into a pissing match. LOL

It'll be interesting to see what crawls out of the garages and shops for this "olympics" thing and how open to competitors it will be. Will it just be a group of friends having some fun or an all comers competition showcasing vehicle abilities and talent. Glad you guys weathered the storms. A lot more water on the trails. If people see those scammer bot things in the comments, report and remove them. Kind of a fun game of whack-a-mole.

Hey guys, I don't often comment on any of these videos that I watch, as I don't want to waste your time, but from all of the videos that I've watched, and I'll tell you that there's been many, and you Rory, your awesome crew, and in particular Trail Mater, from what I've seen, as far as hard core off road recovery goes, nothing comes close to you guys. I've been with you all from the start, watched your recoveries, and Trail Mater does it all with ease. I live in Western Australia, and our terrain doesn't even come close to what you have there, which is another reason why I love watching your videos. Keep up the good work okay. 😁😂

I started watching Matt's channel and have since found Paul's and your channel through association. IMO the "Tow truck Olympics" was intended to be fun between friends and has since blown up with every youtuber that has a wrecker getting butt hurt if they did not get an invite. You three in particular are very good at problem solving and more importantly solving the problem with what you have available. Matt's "world biggest off-road wrecker" is just another tool in his bag to make recoveries in his area, to supplement the other vehicles in his fleet. Paul's wrecker is an upgraded version of "Grandpa Sherm's"(his deceased father) tow truck that was used to move junk vehicles and casual off-road recoveries. While I think Matt's wrecker is very cool and will have a place, it would be almost impossible to compete against your wrecker doing what you do, because it is proven technology that has been adapted over years to fulfill your needs. They have both joked about competing for second place and definitely respect your skills and knowledge. I would suspect there will be some trail recovery, but wouldn't be shocked to see a fair amount of sand related recoveries, since that is his bread and butter. Either way it should be friends getting together having a laugh, learning what their rigs excel and what should be their next youtube build. LOL

Rory w/ Trail Mater is the OffRoad Recovery Master period! Fab Rats come in on a distant second of true tow truck hauling a rig out.....i haven't seen Matts Offroad recovery actually tow a vehicle out...they get to some crazy places and PULL - recover things out, that's not the same as a true tow truck, so to see him with his new actual tow truck will be something to watch! Rory has the understanding of lifted weight swinging around and how NOT to cause more damage, we'll see if the others can follow suite....LOL! Should be a blast to watch for sure!

I completely agree! The more people talk about it the less they know or have. When I moved furniture for a living and people would talk about how they had 20+ years of experience yet couldn't do certain things, I would always ask them if that is 20 years of experience, or one-year repeated 20 times. ;-}}

As always it was a pleasure watching and thanks for putting these videos together. You cracked me up when the steering wheel locked up most people would loose it out there on the trail but not you. You just pull out the misc. tool bag and tear into it and are back on the trail. Yeah my money is on you at The Tow Truck Olympics most everyone as you pointed out don't have the seat time like you guys do with the heavy wreckers. Yeah there are a few that have them but not on the trails you all are going to be on. 🍻
