My buddy (a fellow mechanic) moved to Texas and a month later flew back to pick up his Acura TLX that wasn't selling for what he wanted out of it, and drove it back to Texas. I'm a Jeep junkie and would live my life offroad if I could, on his way he swung thru moab and sent me pictures and videos of his Acura TLX "offroading" in moab. I told him to swing by moab motorsports and check out Trailmater. Well Rory wasn't there and he told me it was a bust. Until he found Rory and Trailmater on the side of the road! I can't wait for my moab trip Sept 2023. I'm so fuckin stoked!

Your reasoning for the difference in wreckers is quite valid. Mater, is meant to be a back in the ROUGH rescue truck, and serious trail repairs. Blue, is for more local, not so rough rescues, and is more street friendly. You and the guys just keep up the good work.

Towing skills are definitely in your favor for the tow truck Olympics. People need to understand that every different style of tow truck is designed for a different reason. You have designed your tow trucks for the type of towing that you do. I'm thinking about building a off-road tow truck for the trails and mud here on the east coast

I'm sure the Olympics will be a lot of fun and hopefully showcase each trucks strength and crew abilities. Thanks Rory for the descriptions of your trucks differences. The modifications on each are designed for their purposes. Every time you explain a different specification on Trail Mater it really shows your knowledge of the recoveries you deal with. Great stuff!

I started off (and still am) a HUGE fan of Matt's Off Road Recovery - and have only recently become a HUGE fan of trailmater. In the short time though that Rory has been posting videos - I keep looking forward to new content because... 1.) Driving off-road in a WRECKER - with no doors - filming with one hand while steering - and shifting with the other 2.) Multiple off-road welding, repairs and parts swapping on recovered vehicles 3.) a LOT of breathtaking scenery, editing and all-around great videography 4.) The ability to not only trailer a vehicle out, but also suspend one from a boom - and then drive over very challenging terrain while SIMULTANEOUSLY remote-extending and retracting the cable in and out so the recovered vehicle doesn't smash into his tow-rig. 5.) His rig is loaded with a shit-ton of things categorized under the heading: "It's far better to have THIS and not need it - then to need THIS and not have it" These are but a FEW of the reasons why 'I' think his channel has grown quickly and why 'I' think it'll be very tough for most to challenge him in an extreme recovery situation - - much less hope to beat him in any 'Olympic' type event. That's my 2¢

A note to Mr Mike . On those emergency brake cables, I would soak in diesel fuel . Worked like a charm for me I lived in an area where there was a lot of road salt used . Just thought I would throw in My 2 cents . Back in the seventy I had an old 65 Ford truck one ton . The previous owner had installed what was I think called a micro lock . Step on the brakes flip a smaller lever and release the pedal and all four brakes are locked . Providing all of your brakes are good . It worked great Check it out . Have a great day boys , stay safe . Terry

Between You, Matt and Paul, each of you have a little different kind of terrain that you are dealing with the most. Pretty sure you guys will all have a blast at the competition!

Cool video. I enjoy shop videos. Anyone who questions your truck setup obviously doesn’t have your experience doing extreme off road recovery. It’s one thing to pull a stuck vehicle out. But to recover a broken vehicle and haul it out of an extreme off road situation is an entirely different need. Trailmater works great because no doubt it has evolved over time and modified to do what it does really well. But the important factor that makes it work great is the guy in the drivers seat. You make the truck work because you know it’s capability and you know your area well. Now but the average weekend off roader in your truck and it would probably not be successful

With all due respect to your experience, you will continue to shred shackle bushes on your leaf springs if you tighten them while the vehicle is hanging in the air like you appeared to do this time. The truck should be lowered to the ground and resting on it's own weight before tightening the bolts up on the shackles. Since they sit that way a vast majority of the time the bushes should last a lot longer instead of torqued/tensioned in the air where they never sit very long. Thanks for a great channel, I love watching the landscapes you drive through.
@derekpirie9188
@derekpirie9188 2 жыл бұрын
Fully agree on that one. When Pick Up vehicles are built, they are assembled upside down , the rear spring shackles are only tightened when a jig clamps the axle down to ride height. I spent 36 yrs in an Automotive factory. That being said, Rory's Trailmater cannot be beaten. If it breaks, it can be fixed.

This is incorrect for the style of bushings being used. I agree 100% when using OEM style bushings . They are a Molded bushing , the center sleeve and outer shell is bonded together , the rubber twists with movement. He is installing a 3 piece bushing. A sleeve, bushing and outer shell . The sleeve is crushed between the brackets and allows the bushings to rotate inside the outer shell . So and OEM Style should be tighten while on the ground so it's in a neutral position, while the 3 piece bushing can be installed anyway and once lowered will rotate to it's neutral state. The 3 piece is used becouse of this to reduce binding of the bushing while in motion.
@1ltlbrnc
@1ltlbrnc 2 жыл бұрын
With a stock style bonded rubber bushing you would be correct. But this setup is a multi piece with a greased (wet) style sleeve design that is supposed to spin inside the bushing. If he ran bonded rubber with the stress and flex he put to the suspension, they would shred themselves. You saw what happened to the impregnated (not wet) bushings he removed. On a street vehicle those are supposed to be long life replacements!

Shawn and Mike seem to work well with each other 👍 AND seeing Lilly hanging out with you once in awhile, well, that is icing on the cake with a cherry 🍒 on top. You're going to laugh, everyone at work did... I did the same exact rigged setup for a cable 2 weeks ago as a throttle cable in my Comanche when it snapped. I ran to a bike shop and grabbed a bicycle brake cable. I split the sheath, used the oem cable on the throttle body side, threaded the bicycle cable on the pedal side, and I used two cable stops as clamps in the center. It was tight, I could feel the engine vibrations in the pedal, but did she get me home and back to work the next day.... F to the yes. The correct cable came in the 2nd day. Edit: ****Each truck has it pros and cons for the job and terrain it was built to work in.****

I don’t know why the info about the Tow Truck Olympics is being so closely held. You definitely MUST be there as well as some others that we don’t yet see much about them towing. I think a lot will depend on whether or not there are classifications such as: • Heavy Wreckers • Trail Rated Wreckers • Highway Towing Rigs Or not. If there is you will be the favorite in S some of them. Whatever!! It will still be a lot of FUN!! Great as always to see you and your team in action!!

I am looking forward to seeing the rules the Olympic committee will present. Thanks for sharing the features of your recovery vehicles. Every feature has its placement calculated to maximize its effectiveness for getting the job done. Even the "Victory Dew" needs a cup holder to proudly display the accomplishment it represents. Lilly is a brave girl and trusts her dad completely.

your rigs. your shop. your business Rory! the sheer pleasure of following along your shop and off-road recoveries keeps coming back. Oh and I'd totally support and subscribe to a Trail Mater 2 non family friendly channel as well.

Rory, I agree with you. The Olympics is about getting together with good friends, and having fun, not about winning. Well, maybe a little about showing off you and your vehicle's recovery skills. 😉

In the oilfield in the sixties on, we had line locks on our trucks. You press on the brakes, throw a lever and locked all hydraulic brakes. This works great and no problems.

Thanks for explaining the difference in the two trucks. That part about the Boom going forward on the Blue truck made sense. I have seen it happen on Oilfield Trucks where someone forgot to secure the Gin Poles to the bed of the truck before driving. As far as the Wrecker Olympics, since one size does not fir all, there should be separate competitions pertaining to what the wrecker is designed to do. From what I've seen, nobody really has the experience or a real off road wrecker that can compete with your knowledge and Trail Maters ability when it comes to off road recovery. I'm sure Matt has something figured out that will make it fair and entertaining. Good Luck !

Rory thank you for explaining the difference I was wondering about that. I will say when it comes to the tow truck Olympics that a lot of people have said and I am one of those people that they are betting on you and TrailMater. I thought you had an interesting braking system for TrailMater and it worked well I thought. I am sure it will be better now. Keep up the great work
