The way to avoid getting hit by the Flytrap is to simply stand just barely in range. For some reason they don’t attack immediately once you’re in range. So instead, you wait until they attack, and react just in time and step out of range. Then it’s just an easy one-hit-one-kite until they die.

Gnat mounds respawn, and you can mine them for flint. I suggest buying tools from the shop if needed before you gather a good collection of flint.
