Reap what you sow is one of my favorite updates to dst. Nerfs to overpowered strategies should happen more, as for many years the 'meta' has been the same stale stuff. Farming is now a viable source of food and I hope this treatment will be done to other aspects of the game. We need more quality of life changes and rebalancing (instead of just reworking every character) to keep the game fresh, which I think this update definitely provided.
@Buglin_Burger78784 жыл бұрын
Some of the nerfs went way too far or not enough, by the time you have a Wickerbottom who can decide "Lets make Horticulture Book." you likely have a berry farm far greater then 10, and would be better off using your map, finding 2 MooseGoose nests, and crying as your realize this book is effectively worthless. (She was OP as heck before, a 20 would be better.) Due to Summer many people Cave/Oasis, the later of which has limited space and doesn't let you farm well. Meanwhile Bunnymen, while still useful, are far more versatile then their Pigmen counterparts. Nothing changed there due to their fast respawn timers. If you wanted to keep them in check... you need to have their timer be FAR LONGER then the Pigmen. Having a 4-5x longer timer would've bee better to keep them in check with their large loot drops but their pool is still versatile enough that they are silly useful.

Always nice to see some good coverage of an update, I like what you did with that television head avatar. Normally I see it in a video and it’s just there to show random facial expressions, but in your case you made it charming and different.
To me it doesn't feel super strong so far. It isn't bad, but it takes quite a bit of time and tending for how much food you get out of it. I don't mind though, I play for fun and don't care what the most efficient way to do things is, and this new system is honestly really cool, it feels fresh and engaging, I like it, farming feels way better now and feels like a good mechanic.

I would like to see a guide or showcase of everything a base needs and where exactly it should an build. I was thinking of making base in caves, but the loading in and from caves takes too long for me to use it regularly, so I almost always base in the oasis desert, because I don't have any prepared setup of ice flingomatic coverage that would protect entirety of my base in any other biome. The annoying thing is when the oasis is too far from everything without wormholes or swamp or pig king nearby. Then I just restart the world and look for a new one until I find a good one... I would love to know how to bypass this habit and make a functional base anywhere in the world. Especially now with the new farming tiles my base usually spreads to more than 1-2 ice flingomatics can cover. I was thinking it would be good to have some universally good base setup with 1, 2 and 3 ice flingomatics. The absolute hardest part for me is where to put firepits so the ice flingomatic doesn't extinguish the flame while also protecting everything around the firepit like crockpots, chests, tent which I want to use at night... I know there is a mod to make ice flingomatic AI smarter, but most servers don't have them and the mod could turn outdated or cause lag/fps drops or something, so I want to be prepared for the worst and learn to play without it rather than rely on it.
@Elijahgoods4 жыл бұрын
Typically this is what people do (more advanced players especially) they’ll mostly base in dragon fly desert, this is for the cactus, tumbleweeds and the dragon fly is close by so it’s easy to solo on day 10-15. Basing around a wormhole is optimal in the dragon fly biome. Normally nobody really builds ice flingos for at least the first few summers. So during summer, it’s best to make another base in the caves where you just live out from that. All you’ll need is a; fridge, bird cage, fire pit, alchemy engine and a few chests. During the summer it’s most efficient to explore all of the ruins and clear it, thats if you didn’t ruins rush. Hope this helps, I’ll gladly follow up with any questions you might have ! edit: I forgot to mention that if you stay in the caves during summer you don’t over heat and nothing in or out of the caves catches on fire, thus why you don’t need flingos.
@Laireso4 жыл бұрын
@@Elijahgoods Yeah but then you need to make another fridges and crockpots and alchemy engine and everything... Usually I don't have that many resources laying around but I guess I could spend Spring in preperations for it. I haven't really made a cave base, because I don't know much about the biomes and where is the best place for building it. Should I explore the entire layout of caves looking for something specific before settling or is it just best to make it right under the staircase which leads to my base on top, even if this place is surrounded by the white spider webs? I know there is the mushroom tree biomes, the lunar tree biome and once I found a bunch of boulders blocking a corridor and golden structures behind it. I haven't really spend much time exploring or watching videoes about caves. I won't do as well probably but once I beat summer I think I will be able to survive a whole year round and I think it will be real fun learning about it all from experience rather than reading them from fandom wiki. Any tips that won't spoil much are welcome though, especially about the cave base.

i like the new update, but the farming system is way overcomplicated and time consuming. yeah you can completely ignore it and just wait for the crops to grow, but that's no different from the last system, save for the price you pay for actually planting the seeds. if you don't wanna ignore it and actually tend to your crops to farm specific seeds or aim for the big crops, it'll take so much time it ends up just not being worth it. that's really the only gripe i have with it, it's too time consuming. otherwise, i love the new system.
@anderrivverwind92674 жыл бұрын
I kinda get what you're saying but other than the time spent planning out your crops, getting Giant Crops is super easy and doesn't take much work. Just plant em in the right season, balanced correctly, with exactly 9 plants per plot. Then water them every so often and blow a Beefalo horn each growth stage and that's it. Takes about 10 seconds each stage.
@LumpkinBoi4 жыл бұрын
@@anderrivverwind9267 yeah but it's too time consuming still. after everything's grown, you still have to hammer every crop, then till each spot, then plant each seed, then water it again. and that's only one plot, what if you have four or more, that even more time spent. i think there should be more ways to automate everything, or at the very least make everything a little faster. i like the idea of the music intruments tending to every crop at once, or a machine that tills the soil for you.
@joelalejandro6154 жыл бұрын
@@LumpkinBoi Honestly for solo i just make two mega crop harvests at once, visit my pig farm once and im done for the rest of the season. Honestly these changes are all great and i am Wickerbottom main, i have no issues with the nerf as long as klei is careful with the character refresh that will happen in the future. I mostly enjoy Wickebottom for her versatility and how many ways she has to influence the game. On another note i don't think you answered the question of "are the reap what you sow farms viable?" that was in the title, this update was very welcome especially for new players this is great but they are not efficient food source at all. Instead of lichen because of horticulture changes, now beeboxes are the best food source. Farms are great if you have Warly or if you are able to swap to Warly at celestial portal and just get his great recipes and just bundle wrap stacks of them. This is purely talking about efficiency, as i said before i think farming update is great and even if you don't want to use it as your primary food source, it can still be used if you just collect seeds all around when you travel and just plant them, it is not a bad idea and it is probably even viable to do early on.

I hadn't played for a while and came back unknowingly after this update and I have to say it was incredibly frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the wacky and often nonsensical style of Don't Starve, but it gives new players literally no way of knowing that's what they need when half the name is wrong and the other half is a made up word and you can't tell by looking at it; you have no idea of the function of it before you make and use it. At least "farm plot" tells you what it does. Then you have to do fairly standard stuff like watering and fertilising and using a hoe and shovel which are pretty intuitive. Seems fine. But wait, here's a completely nonsensical hat that you apparently should be using despite no indication of it, which requires a bucket of poop which for some unknown reason requires an alchemy engine to make. How hard is it to make a bucket and fill it with poop? I'm all for a more engaging system with a lot of depth, but unless it's a lategame system it needs to be accessible to new players. It's good once you understand it, but the game gives no indication of how to make a farm, and you wouldn't know you'd need a garden rigamajig if it slapped you in the face. I had to google to try to figure it out, and if a player cannot figure a system out ingame then you've failed a fundamental step of game design. I think it'd be fairly easy to fix as well: name the garden rigamajig to something that makes more sense like "farming rigamajig" or "farm plot generator", then have a broken one spawn near the spawn portal with a couple barren plots already there so a new player will come across it and see "ohh so this thing made these plots", and that way new players can understand how to start farming without having to be directly told.

In the Waterlogged beta the rigamajig has been renamed to 'digamajig,' which will make it slightly more obvious to new players. But yeah, agreed, Don't Starve Together sucks at this in particular, Klei seems to have forgotten about the new player process. Playing through a lot of the late game content on stream, I was basically clueless and did have to rely on chat or the wiki to figure out what the hell I was supposed to be doing, lol

I just got DST and I won’t lie when I say that I’m terrified of new farming. Cause the idea of weeds ruining my hard work when my play style in general is “explore + constant torch” Is there any suggestions you can give to a dumbass newbie

Honestly, this was one of my favorite updates by far but i kinda dislike how it makes winter be a viable season for farming with aspargus fern and stuff, i just think that you really shouldn't be able to grow anything at all in winter, i always felt that winter was meant to throw you off and get you out of your confort zone, making the player have to hunt instead of farming, i think that this will overall make everything easier. which isn't a problem but still... I actually like them nerfing wickerbottom too, i feel like she was too OP anyway before this.

Now all you Wurt, Warly, and Wormwood haters can finally shut up about these characters being hard, Just kidding. But being serious, im glad this update basically kinda buffed these characters because i think that warly, wurt, and wormwood were characters that kinda alot of crap on them.

Awful to join a server after the update and see a quirky survival horror game become an imagined fantasy of facebook farmville devs. The only intrigue it gives is the challenge of ignoring farming altogether and surviving on a diet of meat/ growables available in the wild.

The video felt like two minutes. My only complaint is it was to short. I do think you could have put more info in it. Compared to your other videos it felt a little less of a conversation and argument and more like a summery of one.

Farms are resource... intensive? For using common materials and the excessive amount of poop by finding some beefalo. In return you could turn seeds which offer 4 hunger into things which offer 25+ hunger as opposed to them just being seeds. They are just as self sustaining for a large server size... given you have more people gathering materials/finding seeds. You praised the new farms for this... but completely shut down the new farms. Okay, so lets talk about the nerfs then. So farms can produce LARGE AMOUNTS of food. ...okay what do we need to nerf to keep this viable? Making ANYTHING worse when it has such a high potential benefit is pointless. Without Wickerbottom... I can still pass the nuances of Reap What you Sow... by not participating. Remember that thing about being able to just leave seeds there and ignore it as well? You know what you can do if you're making applied Horticulture now? Just get a few more berry bushes. It is quicker to go out and find 10 plants most of the time then make that book. While I do agree she needed a nerf as growing 50+ berries in one use of a book is pretty huge... 10 is pitiful and small as a simple MooseGoose Nest has 5 and some frogs and some fish.
