For this selection of toys from his collection, Tim has chosen toys that operate on a string. Some climb up a string, some descend a string, and some can climb and descend the string!
Firstly there are some examples of what we call the stick and slip mechanism. These toys descend down a string in little steps or jerks, and this gives a pleasing animation effect to the toy.
We also have a wooden ball which descends the string, but under control. You can stop it at any point by increasing the tension on the string.
Next up are a few toys that can climb and descend the string. Generally using a two pulley system tucked away inside.
We have a wooden craft toy that as you alternately make the string tighter and looser, climbs up the string.

I remember as a child we had a toy where, much like the bird on the string, we had a little wood pecker on a wood pole and we'd always watch it go up and down for at least 3 minutes. Then again that may have just been me as my two brothers played with disney stuff and toy guns. I guess that's why I'm the artist of the family.

As he showed the autumn lead and the multiple coins on a string i remembered, that i had a worden top in a Metall rod, that used the same wiggling technic to wander down the rod and peck in it all the way Down. The autumn leaf looks like you can also use a simple Butterfly shape and it will look like flapping it's wings in it's way down.

Tim, pulleys were invented long before the middle ages! The Greeks were the first to document it around 400 BC (about a thousand years before the start of the middle ages) and it was likely invented hundreds or even thousands of years prior, when recorded history was still in its infancy.

8:25 : Instead of waggling, I believe you have to give it a circular movement in order to make the ball go round so the item will climb up the 2 strings. It is a much easier movement and the effect is a bit more visually surprising.
