I agree, too many guitar lessons online are so concerned with CAGED shapes and chord tones (which are cool and important), but I think the player watching can get overloaded with all of that stuff. Most of the rock/blues stuff we all like is going to be much simpler, ie. Pentatonic based. You dont need to be fluent in every shape, just a good pentatonic skeleton and the knowledge of the intervals around the scale degrees can get you far.

Hey Harold, I actually just think back when I started playing guitar and what things I wanted to learn. And that’s how I get the topics for my lessons. Nothing very complicated or deep theory. I started playing in my mid teens, about 55 years ago and thanks to your lessons, along with a couple of others on the web, I've learned more technique and style in the past couple of years than over the previous 50+! Rusty, your laid back style of teaching is amazingly informative while at the same time being just pure fun. This lesson is just another fine example of that. My almost 71 year old fingers are now doing things I never dreamed they could do 4-5 years ago. Even if I only master 40-50% of your lessons, the improvements in my playing are pure joy. If I could bundle myself, along with you and your instruction videos into a time machine and go back to my early, Beatles induced desire to play, my career path may have been very different! Keep up the great flow of inspiring lessons. I know that, at my age, I'll never become a world class guitarist, but I'm sure going to have fun trying 😂!!

I try to practice playing along with the backing track every day. I can play for 15 to 20 minutes without stopping, using arpeggios, chord tones, and all sorts of techniques. When I get tired, I take a break on the pentatonic scale. Sometimes, it sounds like real music, which is a shame, because it doesn't happen as often as I would like.

Hi Rusty. I always enjoy your approach to demonstrating these concepts. When choosing a pentatonic scale to work with a certain key you may want to mention that a player can use both the major pentatonic and it's relative minor pentatonic scale and vice versa. E.g. In your first key in this lesson you demonstrate your point with a Bm chord and the corresponding minor pentatonic i.e. B minor pentatonic. Your subscribers may benefit from knowing that D major pentaonic works just as well. Thanks again.

I don’t think at all , I use my ear … that’s the trick , great you mentioned this here and I think you’re the only one bringing this up in a tutorial 😊 and when you play by ear you play by heart there’s no knowledge in between …. Which makes the solo really stand out because of its emotional quality … the problem with most guitarplayers especially beginners is that they have a problem of letting go of the theory and solely trust on their instincts

My piano teacher loaned me his guitar to play harmonics since it was easier than my ukulele. But after two minutes I had to stop since I've got shoulder problems. He realised that the uke is perfect for me. I also found out that I won't be able to vibrato. So I'll learn other techniques. I'm still practicing my circle of fifths progression to learn the fretboard in G, and will switch to E minor as soon as I've got the major scale better integrated. I actually don't like tabs and am transcribing into notation. But I'm throwing in your little tricks with triads and pentatonics into the progression, and I'm super chuffed with my progress. Merci beaucoup for all your help.

@@rustysguitar1 I do make a pedal that is very similar to how a klon sounds, very "transparent" and touch sensitive, but the circuit itself is absolutely nothing like a klon. What's the best way I can contact you?

@@rustysguitar1 awesome- I threw the circuit together last night, and I'll hit you up as soon as the artwork is finished. All of my pedals have hand painted graphics done by my wife. I married well lol

Rusty let me start out by saying that I love your channel immensely. I have learned to solo using your lessons and watch and add a like to all of them. I really have enjoyed a few videos that you have done like shoock me all night long and sweet home. It kind of put you in the mind of an artist and what they think we they write or play a solo. I would really love to see you break down one of Aerosmith Joe Perry since he uses the Pentatonic a lot when soloing. One in particular is the solo for Crazy. It seems like he changes positions with the chords. Would be a great song to break down for beginners learning to solo as well as just a killer solo. Seems to me and I may be wrong that he uses the major as well as the minor Pentatonic. Would love your take on it. God bless and keep up the amazing work you do.

I plug my guitar, microphone, and the earphone jack of the computer into a mixer. Then I take those outputs go into my interface. Which goes directly into my iPhone for recording. But this also works for practice. I have a headphone jack in my interface. Thanks for checking out the video.👍

I’m glad you like the lessons! Most of my videos cover that topic. You can use groups of notes within the Pentatonic scale or you can use arpeggios and triads over the chords. But watch and listen to the players that you like. Talk to you soon.👍

Will playing the A minor extended scale still work for the progressions when you're playing the E and F chords or do you have to play those pentatonic scales. I was not sure if you make the changes. Thanks.
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 2 ай бұрын
If you’re improvising over a backing track, that’s in the key of A minor, the A minor Pentatonic scale will work over all of the chords in that progression. Like I said, in the video, I use one main scale over the entire progression. Thanks for checking out the video.👍

Hey Robert, I use a small mixer that I plug in my guitar, microphone and backing track from the computer. Then that goes directly into my interface, which goes into my iPhone for recording. Using a small mixer allows you to use multiple inputs. Then I just plug into the headphone jack of my interface. Thanks so much for checking out my Lesson👍
