I just amend the soil on the top of whatever container I want to plant. I don't dump it all out. Haven't had a problem so far doing it that way. We have raised beds in the garden & along the house on one side. And several large containers to plant in. Last year I planted 4 tomato plants in the containers. I had a beautiful harvest. I added marigold plants by them & it kept the bugs away. Wonderful. Lorraine

Zone 4 in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Windy? Yes!! We're used to warming westerly winds coming from the coast and over the mountains, but this year the wind has been crazy! Not sure what's going on but batten down the hatches! Linda, we're about the same age, so I really appreciate seeing your garden tips, tricks and hacks to make gardening easier. I have some very large containers and will be planting them up in about a month or so and will definitely assemble a mobile potting station in my wheelbarrow. Thanks for the inspiring videos!

I now live in Edmond,OK. Zone 7a. The winds are strong and constant. I am learning that I will need to water just planted shrubs every other day to get them established. The winds are going to be the catalyst for removing grass lawn and replacing with turf and hardy shrubs and perennials. I love the combination of in ground plantings and containers in the garden. Your eye for design is evident and so inspirational.

I use my son’s old wagon that I used to pull him around as a toddler. All of my garden equipment, like tools, Espoma fertilizers, compost, and potting soil goes in there. I have a bad back so gardening is a challenge. It works really well. My husband switches out what I need so I don’t have to lift. I heavily landscaped my entire acre property. My hobby is awful for my back, but you learn to adapt. I love gardening and not even rods and screws can stop me lol.

Also I use an old wagon with rebuilt sides for hauling all that’s needed. Plus it is just a best go to if you don’t have wheel barrel. We also do routine walk about in my two big old barns. Today for example, we found an antique mirror that after we clean it will set up on a half barrel that we planted elephant ears in. Can’t wait to see.

Hi Linda, I am in zone 6 and woke up to snow this morning. Thankfully, it didn't accumulate and cause any harm to my perennial flowers and shrubs. I have always replaced my potting mix every year until last year I used the old potting mix combined with new to plant my David Austin rose tree just like you demonstrated and it was the prettiest of all my roses that were grown in new soil. I am a believer and I appreciate all your unbiased tips and tricks. I am looking forward to seeing your beautiful garden this season.

Zone 10a, San Francisco Bay area. I have gophers so most of my planting is in containers plus I'm handicapped and it makes it much easier for me to garden. I find grouping my containers really helps and I use an umbrella when the temps get too hot. It was 89 yesterday! It will be 76 today. Love your videos and can't wait until I get your book next week, yippee!

Yes Linda, live in country about 75 SW of OKC. Winter wheat on north and south side of my old farm house. Winds are really bad. North or south. With gust of up to 40-50 lately. I just wish we were getting more rain. Expanding flower gardens, with help of my confidant and best friend for many years. We’re trying each day to plant, transplant, propagate from other roses, especially. But you are right about these winds are very physically draining. We, not young anymore for sure, finding ourselves taking more breaks. But at the same time while we’re sitting we look around. Decide to do something different than originally planned. Trying to get more flowers planted from seed. Container gardening last year was our main thing from seed. Learned from your videos and a few others of doing things easier, and making sure we take the time to sit and enjoy the one rose bush divided from a container last year. We have nine more rose bushes to get in. But we have learned that preparation ahead and setting up where the winds aren’t knocking us over. Lol. Anyway a new thing for us is the rose bush cuttings she brought today, we’re soaking them tonight and then we are using cinnamon in a dampened paper towel for propagation and digging holes filling with just potting mix with some gravel for drainage. No we won’t see blooms this year. But boy next year will be awesome. Okay I am done. I just watched this video of container geraniums you had and already got more ideas. So Thank You. I love watching your videos because I am in Oklahoma and I feel I’m getting more of a better understanding about planting in our part of the country as opposed to NE or NW part of these United States.

When I plant something large in a pot and in the yard, I cut most of the bottom out of the pot. This allows for better draining and when you water, the water goes directly to the plant and does not spread out like it would if planting in the soil. This came from a famous garden designer and landscaper in England. I also will cut the off a few inches of the bottom of the black pots a plant comes in, put the plant back with much of the root ball exposed. I then plant the whole thing in the garden. Love the idea of the bags.

Linda, I am in zone 8a (Eastern Virginia). We have had extreme winds as well. This is the first year I can remember waking up to broken pots and patio items tipped over. I do a great deal of container potting on my patio and you have been so helpful with this. Several years ago, I began trying to fill most of my pots with perennials and/or evergreens and this has been very helpful. I save a few for pretty annuals as well. Sending you sunshine from VA❣️

Linda, I'm in Zone 4b Minnesota cold spring and very windy our gardens are starting to wake up. I adopted the wheelbarrow soil mixer a few years back when my containers became to large and help was not always availab!e. Another tip is a two wheel dolly to move the containers no more lifting for me.

Grow bags, I love them!!! I planted my extra tomato plants in the 10 gal last year and they did better than the ones in the raised bed. I also planted Okra, potatoes, and peas in them. They did fabulous. But you gave me an idea with my potted flowers I love! Use the smaller grow bags in the containers and I can move them if need be. Also I load up my gorilla cart my son got me for Mother’s Day with all my supplies to garden. Thanks Linda!

I have one of the heavy duty wagons that doesn’t tip over. A tip for unloading a big bag of soil is to use a quart sized kettle or a pitcher as a dipper to move product from one point to another. Don’t lift those heavy bags and mess up your back. Thanks for tip about the plant bags.

I love dahlias in pots and use a tomato cage for support! You cut off the long pieces that are designed to go into the ground, bend them in half to make a stake. Place the cage upside down with the largest hoop on the soil and then secure the cage with the hook! I also use this for my big dahlia bed, it work fabulously 💚

Yesterday, Saturday in zone 9b it was extremely windy and chilly. Many times it gets chilly around Easter but the wind was a lot. Regardless, it was a beautiful 71 degrees. Wish I had room to store a wheelbarrow, but the planting bag is something I can use. TY 🤗

Zone 9b central Florida and extremely windy and gusty today but as another fellow Floridian commented it was a great gardening day with the low temps, low humidity and blue sky. From the comments it seems much of the country is experiencing high winds. I personally like it as I tend to "glow" easily when working in the garden (let's just say it like it is, I sweat just walking out the door most days, lol) So the breeze/wind is welcomed by me, but the plants do suffer. Great video and I too reuse my soil, amending it just as you do. Those "tips, tricks and hacks" are all good labor and money saving ideas. I have never had any issues reusing soil and luckily I do not deal with many pests or diseases. Thanks Linda and Stewart!!

I live in Southwest Michigan, I also use the old soil and the new with the vermiculite, but I put in cow manure not a whole lot just to get the plants started they feed all summer long. None of my plants never burn from using the fertilizer. Thank you for all your tips enjoy your show.

I also do that with the cow manure and it saves me from having to administer anything else throughout the season although we do have a short growing season here it really does make a difference in color and size of flowers and vegetables. ✌️❤️🦋🌱🍃

I live in Colorado 5b where the winds have been 50+ this past week. It’s supposed to drop to 29 tonight. I bring a few annuals indoors at night but the rest are perennials and just getting started. Since moving to town, my whole garden is in pots. My tip would be to buy big enough pots. Don’t skimp on size as it will make a big difference in how well your plants do.

Took me a few years to learn that I need to mobile garden lol My pots kept getting bigger and more kept showing up each year! I couldn't love this video enough, I am in zone 3, winds have been horribly extreme and cold this year. I load up my wheel barrow and move around the garden planting pots on site, our growing season is very short and zone hardy perennials are limited in the Canadian Prairies so I love to use containers to plant things that are not so hardy and/or native here.

(7B) Beginner/budget friendly tip for people who may not be comfortable with buying soil and have a nursery plant. Just keep the plant in your nursery container and pop it into the pretty one. I do this with many plants inside and out. Like Linda said, it makes it easy to transition during shifts of season/weather. You may want to make sure it isn't root bound though & has at least some soil to grow into. May inhibit some growth.

Well, I have my coffee in hand and headed back to bed to "lounge" a bit and enjoy this vlog! Container gardening will be at the top of my list once we move! This summer, I told myself to just start with containers and get a "feel" for what types of gardens I would like in the future. I am definitely going to look for those great potting bags. Here in Kentucky, we have experienced a more windy springtime too! At this point, however, I wouldn't say we have experienced much springtime!! Our weather has been ALL OVER THE PLACE and we are getting quite weary!! One day will be close to 70 and then, the next day the temp will drop and we will have sleet and snow...GADS!! We are zone 6 here. Actually, I looked it up and we have 2 zones, A and B. I live in a little town close to Lexington called Versailles ( home of Woodford Reserve Bourbon!!..lol) and we are zone 6b. The 2 zones have to do with weather variation. Anywho, I cannot wait to have warm, CONSISTANT weather and be settled in our home so I can get outside and enjoy some much-needed GARDENING TIME! I am in Malakwa BC and it is always very windy here in the West Kootenai Eagle Valley. That said it is so much windier this year already. It is still cold is here. Zone 5b-6a. May 24th is our last official frost date but we had frost June 4th last year and I had to call up all my reserve plants. Last year I invested in a huge Garden Cart. Solid bodied with 4 air filled 12" tires. I love it! I usually add my spent soil to my compost pile. Makes great brown matter with dried grasses. I did just start a strawberry garden reconfiguration. Back breaking labour but it is half done in 2 days, so I should be finished in another 2 days.

I also reuse my old potting soil. I have too many pots and a small budget. I also mix my own soilless mix using everything you use plus sand and vermiculite but I make my own fertilizer to add. Have livestock on my land and use fermented weed tea. There are instructions all over the internet on this. Love the tip on planting bags in big pots for easy removal when needed. As always love to watch you and Stewart. You make a wonderful team here.

I’m in zone 7a just like the person in Connecticut it is crazy windy here and raining most days. I know I should never complain about rain yet when it isn’t it is so windy! I too find the wind exhausting! Years ago after working a midnight shift I found an old radio flyer wagon in the garbage! I pulled over and put it in my car. This became my “wheel barrow “ and hand truck! I still love it!

Great show Linda! I live in southern Minnesota. Zone 4 and we've had so much wind this winter. Snow on the ground yesterday. Great tips today. A local garden center told me to be "ruthless" with my geraniums. On the first day of spring they said to cut them back 2/3 and they will bush out when they are moved outside in the spring.

I too use a wheelbarrow or a galvanized bucket to dump potting soil and mix in homemade compost or Land and Sea compost. I usually take out about half of the old potting soil and it either goes in my compost or to fill in low areas in my yard. I fill I with new mix. Lots of wind in Texas; we are under Red Flag warnings due to lack of rain and high winds. Everything dries out really fast and there’s a high fire danger. Thanks for the tips.

First, as usual you’re beautiful! Second I have huge concrete pots, you can’t move them so we do the same, we bring our wheelbarrow potting soil and fertilizer to them. Just bought two topiaries and Linda the prices are so high but they’re so beautiful.. unfortunately two of my topiaries didn’t weather well so going to replace them too. Tomorrow my husband and I are going to a quaint little nursery about a hour away, you would love this place, it has so many beautiful plants plus a little store full of goodies, candies, home accessories and the best milkshakes I’ve ever had.

Yes, Linda, it has been very windy here, too….zone 6 New England. Last month we had brutal winds, and while not as bad so far this month, it is still more windy than normal. We are getting a lot of rain as well. I bought a large gorilla cart a several years ago to move things around in my yard. I absolutely love it….and it dumps. I always mix my soil in it. I load it with with everything I need and pull it to the area where I’m working. I use a large trug for my weed and debris, a small one for my tools, and a seat on wheels (can’t get on my knees anymore). I buy large bags of assorted fertilizers and put them in small containers….grated cheese, laundry scent beads, any plastic container that works and label them. This way I can pour out some fertilizer where I’m working and not have to bring the bags with me. I also bought large plastic trash cans on wheels with covers for yard debris. Then I can just pull them over to compost or out to the street for yard waste pickup. I don’t like those awful paper bags. They fall apart when they get wet and make a mess. I’m a big fan of wheels. At 77 with knee, back, and foot issues I’ve had to find different ways to garden.

I do love your videos. I also mix my potting soil (some old and new), compost, worm castings and perhaps a sample or two of organic fertilizer from a local nursery into my pots. Wheelbarrows are the best potting benches I've owned.

Years ago I bought my wheelbarrow from a neighbor who was moving - $3 !!! I live in an urban setting and use it all the time during all seasons. Had to laugh - I too use the wheelbarrow like a large 'mixing bowl'.

Zone 5b. It’s been crazy windy here! I have been gardening in fabric containers for several years now. It’s been a game changer. I haven’t been able to figure out how to overwinter them though. Our winters can be moist and the fabric can get moldy when stored in the garage.

zone 6b in the Ozarks. yes! we have had 50 to 60 mph winds! it even snowed a bit today. I use my gator to pull around my soil, amendments, rake, plants, watering can etc. BUT, I usually forget something and have to go back. lol. it sure makes it easier though.

I am in zone 7B in Alabama and the wind has been really bad and cold. Tonight and tomorrow night should be our last frost. I like your card idea to move soil around. Thank you so much!

Texas 8b. I would say, buy a decent, but not pricey potting mix and then add your own specialities to it. Such as perlite or peat moss for a loftier mix, fertilizer that might be specific to what you're planting, lime/sulfer, etc. I have noticed the last year, formulations for potting mixes seem heavier (more like compost), so I have been adding a few things to customize as needed. The wind here has been bad as well. Even worse with it being so dry. I have had so many times outside where I had debris fly in my eye. The wind really wears you down and dehydrates you more.

LOVE the fabric container idea! I’ve used those cardboard rose (?) containers for portability as I usually just pot shrubs and perennials any more, but this would be even better, and more roomy, and yes, would be perfect for your QVC baskets!! 🥳🥳. What a fabulous idea! Do they last more than one planting season? So excited about this little cool trick! 💜💜

I live just a few miles due north of Cincinnati OH, and we are in zone 6a. The winds here have been absolutely crazy! I quite often open my patio door in the morning and find pots blown over, sometimes rolling around in the wind. And forget your hairdo, because it's going to be more in your face than on your head!😁

I live south east of Dallas and our winds have been horrendous this spring. Ready for these March ( it is April after all) winds to STOP. Beats you to pieces just doing regular chores. However, the early morning hours are calm so that's when I get things done. Love your videos and have learned so much from you over the seasons. Keep up the great work. Thank you 😊

The best present my husband bought me was my little trolley and like you I can move around the garden and mixing soils to match the plants. Love the geraniums, I’ve just cut mine back and they come back for a lovely autumn and winter show. I hate the wind too 🇦🇺 cheers Bronwyn

I count myself lucky whenever something I've bought survives long enough to get into the ground... haha! So when something dies I generally take the plant out of the pot and then dump the potting mix into a great big tub. Then I stir it up and try to get it back to useful texture. And I amend it with some kind of fertilizer and perlite. Then It goes into the ground with a little gravel when I'm planting something new in the ground. My biggest tip to "brown thumbers" like me, If something survives... buy it again and again. It not only makes the garden more matchy matchy, it almost guarantees that it will survive again... BTW I garden in central valley California... zone 11? Hot in summer, already hot now in April and very little rain. Good luck 😜

I pur compost in the bottom of very large planters. And mixing just a little soil. Yes it fills space in the bottom but is also adds value in to the soil as the roots grow down and in pots that won't always be topped over the year. I really don't like moving large pots and this seem to help keep them fresh.
