In all seriousness, I ignored my depression for years because I thought it was normal, because people with the same mindset of Prince Ea kept telling me that it was normal, it would go away, “why are you letting this get to you”, etc. It DESTROYED my mental health. Not to mention I had undiagnosed ADHD, and had people telling me I was slow, lazy, and dumb. People who thought like Prince Ea made IRREVERSIBLE damages to my mental health. I think Prince Ea was trying to say that people who suffer from depression shouldn't define themselves by the condition, since that will only worsen the problem. Instead they should try to view themselves in ways that will give them strength to combat their depression. He wasn't trying to deny the legitimacy of the suffering. He was trying to give advice that would possibly help people ease their suffering.

Well i not sure how to explain this in words, but alas i will try! Basically major depression is characterised by a negative self image, low mood, lack of motivation and energy (basic characteristics mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)). Also many people with this disorder suffer from insomnia just to add that lovely cherry on top of the depression ice cream sundae. So to tell someone who suffers from this disorder to view themselves in a better way is not possible. That is why we spend so much money on therapy and medication therapy for people who suffer from this disorder. If you could get over depression by simply changing your view of yourself it would not be a disorder. At the end of the day, depression and many other mental illnesses, are caused by a neurotransmitter imbalance (possible as a result of genetics) and/or environment. Or in simple terms, someone suffering from major depressive disorder doesn't have enough happy chemical in their brain and has probably had something within their life to trigger the first major depressive episode.

as someone with adhd it just makes me disappointed that now because of him someone could tell me "oh bro just put your phone down thatll fix it" , and even then him talking only about impulsivity and attention span is no where near what adhd is actually like for someone, because of your impulsiveness you arent accepted normally and end up isolating yourself, people consistantly tell you "its not that hard to remember something" because adhd makes it hard for someone to do a constructed set of tasks with no specific explinations, and you have to find ways to make yourself work which for me i couldnt even find something that worked until this year, and if you dont work you become unmotivated and start hating yourself which altogether leads up to another mental illness to put in the pile. its frustrating that so many people have misconceptions of these disabilities just because you cant see them and they dont understand. I don't think he's comparing the relative damage heart attacks and depression cause, but more the control those afflicted with those illnesses have. You can't just "wish" depression away. It's take months, years and even decades of therapy, medication, and development of coping mechanisms. Even then your depression is never really "cured" in the sense of a common cold. It's more like diabetes where you have to have constant vigilance in keeping depression at bay. (Note I'm referring to clinical depressive disorders, and not situational grief or the mood depression).

The DSM-IV (The manual generally used by psychiatrists) separated it into ADHD-H (Hyperactive), ADHD-PI (Predominantly Inattentive - the kind it sounds like you might have been diagnosed with) and ADHD-C (Combined form of the other two.) It's an incredibly complex subject that changes over time, but from the research I did, it seems like "ADD" isn't used these days.

+Boyinaband The slash in AD/HD is meant to represent the "major Attention Deficiet" and "major Hyperactivity) types. Generally people with AD/HD will lean towards one of those types... To describe it very simpley and possibly poorly. It is definitely a very complex disorder with strong genetic links that we can actually prove exists especially when examining areas of the brain.

It's simply not used much to the point it seems non-existent. Since they are what I like to call "brotherly disorders" it is much simpler to say one term rather than use both. I still use "A.D.D." when talking about it in my family, but I use it and "A.D/H.D." interchangeably when talking about with peers and strangers that I might happen to strike up a conversation with.

ADD is a completely legit syndrome in Sweden. And it's exactly like OP described, ADHD without the hyperactivity. It's more normal in girls and not as noticeable as ADHD and definitely not as well-known. I guess it's different in every country.
