Pants is also common in Northwest England. In the U.S., “jam” typically has fruit pulp in it, while “jelly” is made using fruit juice.

I have two things to add as supplemental information. In America, we use jelly, jam and preserves depending on how it was made. Jelly is made from fruit juices only. Jam is made from mashed fruit and may contain some pulp or solid bits still. And preserves are made from whole pieces of fruit, like Blackberry preserves will still have the little seeds because it was made with the full berries. The second is that Soccer was originally an English term, but after a while the term Football, or Footie, became more popular and the UK decided that anyone who used the original Soccer was wrong.

If I remember the derivation, "soccer ' comes from 'association football', slangified to 'asoccer', then to 'soccer'.

Yes, I have, but it was more about my pronunciation. I asked this construction worker in London where the tube was. I pronounced it tu:b, and he immediately goes 'you mean tju:b, it's tju:b.. you said tu:b'. I'll never forget :D

Fun fact, in Canada you can purchase French Fries from a Chip Wagon. You can also purchase Fish and Chips. We also have the American usage of Chips and there is a brand of potato snack called crisps. Likewise, we use both trousers and pants as well as theatre and cinema. We're very confused people.

I’m from Canada, but I consume enough British media to be aware of and used to most of the vocabulary differences. I still have to consider the context every time I hear the word “football” though 😅

In southern Ontario there is a substantial number of people who refer to Association Football as Football. Some will get quite offended at the name Soccer. Considering the number of American Football fans it can get quite confusing. You really have to know who you are talking to. We have a lot of European immigrants.

We usually call it a "Movie Theater" a theater by itself would also typically refer to a place to see a live performance. Also can we both just say Gelatin and end the confusion.

A really great video. I learned British English at school, and now I live in the United States. The most striking difference to me is the signage for Restroom(toilets); in the US, it's "restroom" or "bathroom," whereas in the UK, the signage is "toilet." In the US, "toilet" only refers to the fixture itself. It's really interesting.

I came from the Instant English Channel and I'm an INSTANT subscriber. You and Lucy are my favourite English teachers on KZbin. I really like your accent, quite more English than other British teachers. Very Londoner. I miss my old days back in London :_)

I think that's 'cellotape', from 'cellophane tape', to distinguish it from the other forms of tape that had opaque backing.

We have jelly and jam, and they are two different things. So what do you call what Americans call Jam? Americans got the word Soccer fromthe Brits. Soccer was british slang for Association Football and Rugger is a player of Rugby Football. Soccer is not an American created word it was created by Brits. Then they abandoned soccer for Football to fit in with the rest of Europe and South America. . To fit in they should spell it Futbol like the rest of the world that calls it their biggest game.

You're pronouncing vocabulary properly which is something Americans do, but the English usually don't. Interesting? 🙂
