You Marcus Pix & Camera Conspiracies are all you need for actually useful information - one of the best takeaways from you all is - most channels are trying to sell you something and you absolutely do not need the newest kit for impressive results

The 28-300mm L lens matched to a 70d or one of the 5DS is the way to go. 28-300mm L lens always flies under the radar. Keep up the good work.

Great episode very interesting. My ears pricked up when I heard the camera, ' The Canon T90'. It was my first real ‘pro camera’ back in college/uni. I had it paired with a 28mm f/2.8 FD, 50mm f/1.8 FD, and 135mm f/2.8 FD lens. It was manual focus and the last manual body before the EOS line and autofocus hit the market. I call it a pro camera because when I started my photo assisting journey, I saw Manchester fashion photographers using it for mail-order catalogue shoots which was huge in Manchester in the 90's.

I love the look and form factor of the T90 and keep one around to shoot a roll every so often. Can't go wrong with FD lenses.

1:01:45 That's been me for the first +/- twenty-three years of my career (1988-2011). I had no idea what other photographers were up to or how they did things, and purposefully so. I believe it enhanced my originality. Now of course, with hindsight, I should have paid more attention to keep abreast of the curve. Btw - I remember Both Alex and Shaun from the early conscript days in while I was serving in the SANDF publication named Paratus.

I do rather enjoy buying used gear on mpb. Nikon is pretty cheap, and the dslr sensors were always way ahead of their time. My D810, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.4, 24-70, 70-200, and 150-600 all combined were only a little over 2500 in total

There are a zillion photography channels that tell me "These are the only two lenses you need" and other utter flim-flam. So here we have two teachers who tell us things of value that can actually improve our photography which is double the pleasure. There is a very sad phenomenon wherein people are told that if they buy these pieces of very expensive kit, they will be better photographers (and they believe it). Utter fabrication, of course. To understand the how and why of better lighting, or the how and why of better composition, etc., those are things of genuine value. Now, I do want to learn about new technical things. But most of the time I simply realize that those things won't help one lick. I still use my 5Ds and have no compulsion to move to mirrorless because (for what I do) there is literally zero benefit. I had a GAS phase where I bought a ton of stuff, and it did have some value in that I figured out what I liked and what I did not like. But it would have been much better if I had learned early on what is really important and what is fluff.

You heard it here first folks, get a Fuji and you'll be signed by an agent! 😅 On a more serious note, during the AI discussion I think Alex got very close to making this point but perhaps just didn't find the words for it: Even for the hobbyists AI can be perceived as chipping away at people's sense of importance. Of course learning the skill is very rewarding in itself, but feeling that you're being told by the world that this particular skill is no longer needed or important does not feel great. You can still do it, but now it's a weird outdated hobby, and therefore it would not necessarily reflect well on you as a person, if you care about that sort of stuff at least, which I suspect most people do :)

Using the exchange rate of today (8 JAN 2025) and the highest prices available, that same kit costs 2,952 pounds on the US version of the mpb site.

AI is good for a draft, the 80%, etc. This is true for common and wide spread knowledge (the AI is trained with). For special things AI stammer around and tells fairy tales like a student in an exam, not knowing the thing. This applies for text, data and logically for anything else like e.g. pictures. Worse with more and more AI 'posted' and used again to train AI, we will see self-reinforcement effects.

This time was such an unpleasant sound (fatiguing). Lots of high frequencies clipping or noise or compression especially on Scott’s mike/line. Put some foam on those mikes or something please. Ironic outcome with so much tech/gear/ talk
@djtoman6875
@djtoman6875 16 сағат бұрын
I suspect that's an outcome of the true nature of the Rode Podmic, which has an accentuated high end that can be fatiguing to listen to after some time. And you're right, a foam pop filter would help a little bit with that. Rode has an updated USB/XLR combo version of the Podmic (Podmic USB) that sounds quite a bit better, and they've made the WS14 pop filter that helps make it look and sound better than the original Podmic available separately. It even comes in many colors.
