I bought one and it came with short sticks, and not very many of them. I can order more, or I can use wooden BBQ skewers! I also use it more for stacking my mail or handy stuff on the arm of my sofa, like keeping the DP diamond holders box - that I use to keep my daily pills in - upright (like stacked mail) right where I'll see them and remember to take them! 😆 I also keep hair bands handy on the skewers, as well as a small bag of crochet/stitch markers. It's such a useful item, even if I don't use it for it's original intended use! Lol

I make large plushies with chenille yarn, and I will say that the light-up hook does wonders for me. I have the same one, and I use it when I'm in the car or at night when I don't have good lighting. The smaller sizes bend fairly easily since they can't be made of more sturdy material, but the larger ones work perfectly.

For the few that do not mind a diy for cushion grips. I use super soft air dry dough. It takes a bit to dry out. I mold it around the grip area and let it dry for a bit before I mold it by holding it. Let it dry overnight, and you've got a custom molded grip. It works great for hooks that have some sort of handle too.

My mother had something called a honeycomb to keep the yarn tangle free and pet proof. She had about 4 of them, which really helped when she was doing a fairisle jumper. The biggest ball of yarn they could take was a 500g. I've not seen anything like them today, so I had to improvise. I picked up a large food container from Poundland ($1 store in America) and made a small hole in the top to feed the the yarn through and I now use that for that when knitting or crocheting, it's very useful.

As a broke crocheter I end up diying a lot of things and I found a super cheap and easy way to keep my yarn balls separated and away from pets is by using an empty coffee container. Wash them out really well and cut a hole in the lid, put in a grommet so your yarn doesn’t drag and that’s it. The only problem I’ve had with this is with really chunky yarns

I love❤ my blocking boards for my squares. My husband has made me 4 of them (so far) - different sizes! He used peg board, drilled out the holes to fit wooden dowels, made a frame around the edges and attached a back to it. I put my squares in water, gently squeeze out the water, wrap them in a towel for a few minutes, then put them on my boards. I stand the boards up (they’re about 24” high) and lean them up against a wall so that the wet yarn doesn’t touch the pegboard. They’re not expensive to make and I have them all different widths to accommodate different sizes of squares. Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎉

I agree that compression gloves do help immensely. However the ones you show do nothing for me because it is my thumbs and fingers that need the support. I have the exact same lighted crochet hook kit and I LOVE IT! I paid $15 for them. I used them to crochet in the dark traveling across country. I used them everyday day with DK and Worsted yarn. Cotton, Wool, and Acrylic yarns for almost 4 months everyday! The hooks are still in great shape! The kit was so handy and if I dropped a hook while traveling it was easy to retrieve, no hook lost in the crannies of the seat or floor board. While I do have the neck light you showed, I can never get it to sit properly to shine where I need it and after a while it starts to bother my neck, so I only use it for repairs on my sewing machines. I guess what works for one doesn't work for everyone.

I saw your video where you were testing Red Heart dish scrubby yarn...the one with all the small yarn side lines...not the Red Heart sparkle dish scrubby yarn. I am so glad to hear that you found working with that particular yarn was nearly impossible to find your stitches. The attempt I made looked like a hit mess with no definition of stitches or rows. I just gave up. By the way, I have been crocheting for more than 45 years & I also have been knitting for even longer. I enjoy leaning new skills in both crochet & in knitting. Great advice... However, the light up crochet hooks - I've had for years and I love mine, especially when working with #123, weight yarn. My hand doesn't cramp when I get lost in my projects. But I do agree with how delicate they can be if work by someone who gets frustrated, easily. Thankfully, I haven't broken any heads - this the same with a resi/plastic set I bought at Walmart.

I have a set of lighted crochet hooks, which were gifted to me. I have used them a lot, with and without the light. I found the set handy to pack when I want to crochet on the road, but don't have a set project. Also, I crocheted a very large side to side vest using them. I find the handle comfortable, and I have not had one of the tips break so far. I agree, it does feel "cheap" but it has stood the test of time under fairly heavy use. It did bother my husband at night when he was driving, as it flashed in his peripheral vision as I crocheted in the dark. Fixed that by changing my position slightly, and shielding it with my work.

I was interested in your review of the Lion Brand compression hand support gloves for knitters/crocheters. I have not tried them myself. But I did have serious arthritis pain in my hands. I stopped for several years doing crochet and finally knitting also as my hands just got that bad. It was not just my hands, my back was terrible too and walking with a cane was too hard on my hands and the wheelchair was not any fun either. I decided that what could I stand to lose if I did and elimination diet. I chose to eliminate all dairy foods as they had constipated me so much as a child. BINGO! I began to get relief in a couple of weeks I did not need the wheelchair and my signature was recognizable again. By a month, I could lift a frying pan with one hand again, and in two months fully loaded with both hands. At that point I still needed some rehabilitation for my fingers were stiff still. So I decided to learn as many knitting styles as I could find and then to also knit backwards as I figured the opposite movements might also help. It worked. After that I could knit what I wanted and also crochet which I have found more difficult. Ten years later I am still going strong as a crafter but never re-introduced dairy. I drink soy milk instead and usually only on my oatmeal. I did eventually go vegan as I thought it might help me with my weight and it did. I had taken all kinds of arthritis pills and pain killers and MoveFree by Schiff, which had been my go-to, stopped working. I had been eating yogurt for lunch daily. Way to much dairy for me to handle. These days I take no meds at all and I will be 70 in 3 months.

That is wonderful!!! Earlier this year I started doing the AIP diet (autoimmune protocol diet). In it you can eat all meat, fruits and vegetables, but you eliminate all dairy and grains. It has made a tremendous difference for me as well. In addition to inflammation in my joints I had a lot of inflammation in my eyes. I'm a work in progress but I have found the change in my diet to have made a tremendous difference like you have. Thank you so much for sharing!!! 🧶🧶🧶

Congratulations on your recovery! I have heard that dairy can agitate arthritis. It is interesting to know. I have had multiple sports injuries over my life and thought I was headed for arthritis. I am 73 and just had a bone scan showing NO arthritis, which is interesting because I have always eaten dairy daily....cheeses, yogurt, whole milk, butter, but little meat. Relying more on nuts and dried fruits. Now they tell me my cholesterol is edging toward high, so I cut out eggs, cheese, yogurt and butter, but still drink my glass of whole milk before bed. Every body I'd different.

that light up resin crochet hook, my aunt bought it for me for Christmas 2022. i’ve been using it as my ONLY HOOK since then. it is honestly my favorite. it is so comfortable for my hand size and shape. i just crocheted 336 extended half double crochets in the pitch black and i was able to see it just fine (the yarn was black as well). i can understand your dislike for it, it is made cheaply. but my experience has been amazing with it. also none of my changeable hooks have worn down with it as well. i crochet almost every single day for at least a few hours a day and they still work perfectly fine for me :)

I use a paper towel holder, coffee can & put a small hole in the lid, my favorite thing I use is a large guinea pig ball!. I took the lid off & drilled a hole in it. Put yarn in ball, string it up through the whole I put in the lid & then put the lid back on.. I absolutely love it.. To cover my hooks "I use Susan Bates! They're my fav bc I like the more pointed tip vs rounded" I bought the hair curlers that are long & rubber. I take the metal wire out of them & cut the rubber curler to my desired size & slip it over my hook. I also use polly clay.. put it on my hook, put in oven & after it cools down just a little, I set it in cold water.. Then it's ready to use

Hi! I’m a Brit living (retired ) in northern Portugal 🇵🇹! My husband made me a granny square blocking board. It’s great : but at 68 years old I think it’s likely that I will be making fewer as they are difficult to handle with sore hands. And no, those types of gloves feel lovely but don’t help. In fact they hindered me as some yarns caught on the edges on your fingers …and going to the loo became a whole new art form! Heck was it difficult to pull them off and then on again - especially once your hands are clean but damp! 🤨 The neck light…hmm. If you are flatter chested this might work. I’ve tried everything, twisting the bendy bits this way and that but the light never lands on my work! Perhaps I’m too well endowed! 😂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these products. It’s always helpful to hear others ideas on why a product is good..or not! And some of the prices are crazy! 😮

DIY fix for the yarn holder. If you have a small silicone bracelet of hair band, or a small rubber band. You can even get clear ones so they aren’t very noticeable. Wrap one of those on each side, and slide them close to the side supports. Then put the little stoppers on. The bands will keep the dowels from sliding and the stoppers in place. 🙏🏻 Thank you for the neck light idea, I found a very bendable one that is comfortable on my neck. Love it! And I may have to find that yarn tote.

I have bought from Joann fabrics several of much better quality lighted hooks. They are sold individually and cost like $7 each. They have fatter handles which I really like that my hands hurt way less with that. The lights are so bright , I used them as flashlights while I was crocheting at night so I didn't need to turn on any lights and wake up my husband. I lost them and all of my crafting and sewing etc in a storage unit. I have been slowly replacing items and I bought that exact set of lighted hooks from eBay. I think I got it for $12 and it was free shipping. I got it because it was/ is a lot of hooks and I liked that they are lighted. For me they work pretty well. I have night blindness so the light on the brighter setting for dark yarns works. The lighter setting works for the light color yarns. The handle is a bit thinner than the other hooks I had so I can't crochet as long before the pain comes. I do like the zippered case they come in. I am a person that likes everything to be in its own place and I am a sucker for things with lots of color and designs on them. That is one reason my home is becoming full of lug brand totes and duffles and trolley bags. So all of my crocheting and sewing and all my other things like files and important papers are all in their own very colorful and beautiful lug. Have you heard of Nelsonwood crochet hooks? I first heard of them on Bag-O-Day crochet. They are hand lathed wood and other materials, hooks that are so comfortable to use. They put Furl's to shame, for me . And I have around twenty Furl's that are fabulous. The resin streamlined. But back to Bryan Nelson's hand crafted hooks. He makes them in premade colors and woods etc but he also makes them totally customized. I have a purple swirled handle with purple wood ends that he customized for me. I am going to have him make me a customized hook with tiny trolls in the handle and another one with tiny unicorns I have. I don't know how to add a picture or I would add a picture of my Nelsonwood hook. He is in Texas and he makes yarn bowls and many other wooden items. Go to Nelsonwood.com

I have something very similar to the Olikraft, I’ve used it to put my spinning wheel bobbins on to ply yarn on the spinning wheel Mine looks almost exactly the same! But I’ve never seen it used for storing yarn for knitting/crochet! The difference is the metal pins in mine have wooden knobs on the end to hold it in place & you can tighten them so they don’t shift or pop out Also, since my yarn is on a wooden bobbin, that gives it weight & helps it turn smoothly around the pin without much force from me pulling

I have the Big Sully and I fully appreciate it. It is not “ unnecessary “ as you claim. And the lighted crochet hook have 2 settings and both help with seeing your stitches. Yeah the wooden one is a problem though, and I currently have 4 cakes inside of my Big Sully 🤷🏽‍♀️

My way to keep yarn fir projects is Ziploc bags. I manually make my center pull yarn balls, then take whichever size bag I need for the skeins (gallon, quart, sandwich, snack), I then cut a small piece on the bottom corner and pull yarn through. They are reusable, keep the yarn clean, and are easier to pack up because they are squishy. I also will tape the yarn label to th outside so I have it for washing instructions, skein info, etc. This works for me, and I love it! I also have a nice set of lighted hooks, i like mine, but there are separate complete hooks and not chargeable, and are a better plastic hook. I love these but dont want to charge them like the ones you showed.

I wind my yarn onto toilet paper tubes using my yarn winder and then put the tubes onto a paper towel holder by doing that it eliminates the issue of the yarn getting tangled on the rod. This only works on the smaller Yan balls 50g’s and less. It also means I can add a cardboard spacer between the tubes to stop them turn the other one at the same time, I am looking at making my own yarn winder so that I can use the paper towel tubes for the larger yarn skins 100g’s and up. I like having them on the tubes as it makes storing them easy by adding a notch to the end of the tube to hitch up the yarn it won’t unravel when placed into a closed box. It also means I can keep the yarns label inside the tube while storing the yarn. I received a light up yarn hook for free just after they showed up on the internet and I hate it the only thing going for it is the handle fits in my hand and it helps when working the yarn. As for the silicon handles it is easy to make your own all you need is a plastic tube to hold the silicon into the shape and size that you wand and a tube of silicon or why not buy polymer clay and make the handle grip that fits in your hand with the imprint of how you hold the hook and then the hook and the handle become one once the clay has been baked, best part is you can use your own colour combo on each hook and that way you can colour code the hook sizes at a glance. I love seeing what is out there and then if it looks useful making my own rather than spending cash on the as that takes away from buying yet more yummy yars😹😹😹

I have a lighted crochet hook kit that my wife got me for my birthday. It's the only thing I use now. I have very bad eyesight from decades of fighting cataracts, glaucoma, and now Fuch's Dystrophy (having yet another surgery in less than 2 weeks). The light does help me see better. Especially on cloudy days or in rooms with low light. I also have arthritis, so the grip on the base helps my hands a lot. I feel like a neck light would just be annoying for me.

I use heavy mixing bowls with oldor separating yarns, and I usually rewind into balls or nostes before starting, so I find knots before I start

I use a neck light and I think it’s the best invention ever! One tip I would give is to pay a little more for one that can be recharged. It’s wonderful.

I have a Carson Interchangeable Light from Hobby Lobby. It comes with 3 different magnifiers, and a stand. You hang it around your neck with the string. The stand helps with larger bewbs or tummies. It still doesn't stay constantly in place for me, and it was frustrating if I moved wrong. The LED light is movable and is great for seeing dark yarn. I don't like the rectangular magnifier, because it has wavy lines that are a huge distraction. The round 2.5x did great for black yarn work. 3.5 to 4 stars is my reccomend. I hope you try it out, too.

I have that tote! It holds two of the huge anniversary cakes from Caron. I feed the yarn out the top and cinch it closed and it acts like a yarn bowl too. It was a Christmas present a few years ago and it holds up really well.

The chunky boy handles i bought 2 of them in different sizes and there soft like you would think and its supposed to help with if you crochet too tight. So far what i can tell i think it will help me not make my stitches so tight.

Hi, Elise! Thank you for your tips because, as much as I love my gadgets, there's only so much I'm willing to shell out for them. My yarn bowl is actually my great-grandmother's glass mixing bowl - clear glass, high sides, thick, and weighs a TON. It's perfect! As for the Chunky Boy grip, I was actually gifted one recently and... well... I don't like that it's so large for my hand. If I had longer crochet hooks, it might be better suited. But I fumble my stitches way too much with it. Perhaps it's a case of getting used to something new, but it's not for me at the moment. (If you want it, please let me know and I'll send it your way!!)

A neck light! Thank you! I have avoided dark yarns for years -- even when I want to make something in a darker color -- simply because it's so hard to get enough light. I never thought of a neck light. Honestly, I never knew they existed. Thank you.

You can make a form of the big sully using bowls from $ tree and gluing a scrap piece of fabric on for the hinges. Then making holes for the yarn to come through and a wooden dowel also from $ tree to hold the yarn ball if you want one all for less than $5
