Acrylic yarn haters often completely forget about people like me who are horribly allergic to wool and other animal hairs. Everything can't be made from cotton, so acrylic it is!
@raynethescribe2772Ай бұрын
Or sensory issues! I'm not allergic to animal fibers, but I've touched many different kinds just to see if there can be one I actually like the feel of and there has been absolutely 0. Merino wool, alpaca, wool blends, absolutely nothing. The second I feel it, it feels like absolute crap to me! Sure not all acrylics are texture-ally fun either, but I know the ones I love that feel soft and drape well etc. And plant fibers too bc while cotton are usually in smaller skeins, they are cheap so I make little projects out of it. Bamboo is very nice, rayon is nice, but they are more expensive. But any animal fiber is an immediate no, i haven't found a single kind of wool yarn that I've liked the feel of.

Use the yarn you like and the yarn that's the best for you for your project. People judging others' crafting choices have personal issues. I've used baby alpaca silk blends for a sweater. I'm currently knitting a gorgeous colorwork blanket from acrylic. For this project, it was the right choice.

Almost choked on my lunch when you said: "a mini scarf pattern for $9.00". I felt that soo hard. In a way it's a tough line to walk: Designers really need to stake out their claim a lot more and say: This is how much work it was, this is how much time it took, you can't have this pattern for 1$ - especially if I'll have to chip off 50c of transaction fees. But while that is certainly valid, you are kinda undermining the whole thing, when you paste some seed stitch on a mini scarf design that was already unoriginal in the first place.
@alenac.3934Ай бұрын
I cannot agree more. I am planning to knit the Sophie scarf but I am refusing to pay for it (I forgot how much the pattern sells for), I find it totally overpriced. Especially because I live in Canada and just yesterday, I purchased a pattern (for something I am unable to just "eyeball" that was US$8.75. Well, in Canadian dollars it was almost $15. That is a lot of money and this time of relentless inflation, I would rather spend it on groceries. I completely understand that designers put time and effort into their work but the prices are often rather inappropriate.

Though I don't need the tutorials much anymore, I am very very appreciative of those who release tutorials. I know it is not always possible, but it is still so appreciated.
@nysaeaАй бұрын
Absolutely. There 's something to be said about the need for variety in pattern presentation in the crafting ecosystem because diversity is good for the community at large. Modern media platforms like youtube have really added value to the ways we share knowledge. We also have to accept that not every pattern will be 100% accessible for every individual and that's okay too, we can't expect designers to cater to everybody at once. I have ADHD and verbose patterns are the bane of my existence. I recently knitted one and it drove me bananas, will not knit again! :'D And now I know I probably need to reach more towards older patterns that fit on a single page lol but it's not lost on me that my specific needs are in direct conflict with other people's needs that require more specificity and guidance.

@bumbygrl and that depends upon climate. I live in Mississippi. In humid hotter climates without a long lasting winter, you might not easily find wool yarn. Wool is harder to use here because of bugs that can get into the yarn or an item and the danger is yearlong here. Moths.and fewer know how to wash wool here. And wool is different quality and different types.
@debitopiaАй бұрын
I lived in Europe for a decade and wool/natural fibers are inexpensive there and very high quality. They also list which specific animal it's from and from which farm and things like the elevation of the farm, etc., which greatly contributes to the type/quality of fiber. It's really fun if you want to get all nerdy about it. Here in the States as it's mass produced, it usually just says "wool" which is the first indicator that's it's low quality, itchy, and not anything I'm going to buy.

The commentary around monetizing your hobbies was so good! I feel like a big part of that came up around the time when hustle culture was big. Having my own creative business while also trying to manage my actual job and my life made it not a fun hobby for me anymore. And when I closed the business, it felt like a real failure even though it was a choice I was making for myself and my sanity, and even though I felt like I had been pushed into having to monetize by hustle culture. I think it’s important for people to remember that a job is a job and even if you like the work, it’s not always going to be fun and the more successful your business becomes, the less of the part you actually like you’re going to get to do. It’s okay for your hobby to just be yours and to only share it with the people around you or share it when it makes you happy!

@debitopia ive done two blankets in cotton, and although its washer friendly its still a little more delicate. I think knowing the mom and how she tends to clothes, has many kids, or just in general how they will treat the object is a big decider for what to use. My cousin has four kids under 10, and shes not the type to set a "display" a blanket. So an acrylic she can dump in the wash with the rest of the kids clothing is perfect. My second cousin's wife is a different story. She has that "pristine" vibes, so a lacy cotton blanket was a perfect fit. Something she can use sparingly, display, and keepsake.

I tried explaining and showing and it still doesn't sink in. So I say you do it your way and I will make one the way I do and then let's compare. Agreed! I just taught myself how to crochet a couple of years ago. I find it much easier to read a crochet chart than a written pattern! I've been knitting for over 50 years and only learned the very basics of crochet when I was young. HOWEVER, having had a career in adult education as an Instructional Designer, I recognize that people learn best in different ways and pattern reading is not in everyone's wheelhouse. We all need to understand that and stop shaming those who can't read patterns.
@debitopiaАй бұрын
@@EsmereldaPea I disagree. Pattern reading CAN "be in everyone's wheelhouse", they just need to modify how they're learning it to their own learning style/disability. Anyone can be taught anything. Even if it doesn't come easy to them, naturally to them or they have a learning disability. If you can read words, you can read a pattern. My DiL with dyslexia will often get the abbreviations wrong in a written pattern so I taught her to translate it into a chart which is easier for her to follow along. It's just knowing what is actually tripping you up and then coming up with a workaround. (I have a learning (and physical) disability myself and I've taught many, many with people with different learning disabilities how to read, read charts, read patterns, knit, crochet, felt, loom, weave, etc. I've found most people that "can't read patterns" just can't be bothered to learn the abbreviations. It can be overwhelming, so writing it out in full words usually does the trick if that's the issue. 🥰

Very intelligent persons would have something like a verbal stammer and not be able to understand simple things because the panic blocked their thinking. I would say-- you added an x and a y, you can not do that. Can you add cows and goats? If you add cows and goats, are you going to call them coats or gows? Of course the persons I was tutoring were smart enough to understand ypu can not add the x s and y s together on an equation because you can only add like things. The concept and rile was dead simple, easy to understand. Intelligent people can dail to get it from impatience or anxiety or a lack of confidence. Some will catastrophize a mistake into i am too stupid to do this.

I love both of the tops you are wearing. I enjoy watching you and have learned new tunisian stitches. Also I'm a pattern reader. I can't grasp people not knowing how to read one. I've been crocheting 51 yrs and sometimes a pattern will throw me off. I just walk away and look again later and it usually hits me. Have a great new yr Toni and Gwen!

If Mama Gwen made that shirt, I NEED that pattern 😍 Currently waiting for my interchangeable knitting needles to take on knitting (my first try 6 years ago was all passion and not enough skill, so was swiftly abandoned) - my Tunisian crochet this last year has wildly increased my confidence that I can take on knitting again, but with a more informed background and patience in my own learning experience. ❤

Oh, I'm so happy to see Gwen! This idea next time to be an interviewer is so cool! *Mini scarfs are european thing (primary France and Italy) and will stay trendy because they are just a staple piece in our wardrobe. Since Beethoven made the scarf a fashion statement, mini scarves are a symbol of artistic mindset and rejection of oppression of the popular fashion. Ironically they have become some of the most popular projects this year. *Combine knitting and crochet in one garment is widely spread in vintage magazine patterns. *In 2025 I would love to do more second socks 😅🙄.

So glad I watched.... hope to see you two again, soon! 🥰

Advent means something like “the coming” from Latin, it’s the run-up to Christmas. In German, it denotes the 4 week running up to Christmas. Advent calenders are a traditional German thing. Children get a tiny surprise every day fro 12/1 to 12/24 inclusive. It could be a piece of chocolate or pretty hair clips or a tiny toy and thing like that. It’s a nice mini present every day!

I LOVE your views on separation of the yarn crafts! I am bistitcheral myself and I love both crafts so much that I could never choose one over the other. I also LOVE you two gorgeous ladies! I wish I wish my relationship with my own mother was half as beautiful as the one you share. I love printed patterns and grew up using them. I always encourage new yarn crafters to learn to read the "secret code" and use the videos as a visual aid. I'm also quick to explain/help them in the "deciphering". AI? Definitely pitch it. ✌️💜🧶

As soon as I saw Mama Gwen I had to click, not that I miss many of your posts. I'm always so excited to hear what you lovely ladies have to say. And I will be keeping my hexicardigans and will be continuing to stitch them. I have gotten some of my biggest compliments from how beautiful it is. It is the first cradigan that made me geel confident. Up next is my hexi coatigan because I love a cardi that makes it down to my knees and sleeves that sit at 3/4ths. I've had soo much fun making them for me and my daughters. My son even got in on it and had me make one for him. I'm over the whole acrylic haters and the knitting versus crochet drama. My mother, daughter, and I work in yarn and fabric. It's so much fun to combine or add to a project with crochet, knitting, embrodery, or fabric. It speaks to how our ancestors survived. You take what you have and make it into something more/else. We love combining and crafting something new out of whatever we have.

" Listen Betty Sue Jo...mm-hmm Quisha"😂😂 I snorted. My grandma taught me to crochet, and the first thing she told me was to learn to read a pattern!I'm a musician and teacher,and it's the same as someone not learning to read music. You'll miss out on most of your potential to create without that skill. And yes, the Woobles are a rip off. 😂
@mynameisnotgirl8184Ай бұрын
I’m curious as to what was the point for the “Quisha” comment? It wasn’t funny and it’s giving micro-aggression. If it’s in relation to a black girl, it’s typically not even spelled that way.
@teem7030Ай бұрын
@mynameisnotgirl8184 you really could've made your own comment instead of coming under mine with unnecessary nonsense. 🤷🏽♀️ Literally, that's what you got out of their entire video? Smh
@valerieconrad1005Ай бұрын
I feel ya with learning to read music! I'm in a community choir, and several people can't read music. I think it really holds them back. Any skill or craft where you aren't learning a major component is really a disservice to yourself and your personal growth.
@Michelle_MayoАй бұрын
@@mynameisnotgirl8184wow. Not knowing how to spell a name so using a different spelling that still gets the name across is that big of a deal to you? Keisha/Kiesha, Kesha/Kēsha, Keesha, Kiysha, Keyshia, Kiesza... there's a LOT of different spellings, plus adding Qs instead is fairly common too. Get a grip! And wth does it matter "in relation to a black girl"?? In case you hadn't noticed, the lady you're responding to is a lovely POC. There's no "white" way (or "black" way) of spelling a name! 😂

Definitely pitch it on the Acrylic Haters! Some of us can’t afford to do every single project out of luxury fibers, as much as we want to. Sometimes acrylic yarn is the only thing keeping my hobby accessible to me, and that’s okay!

I laughed! Thank you! I want to PITCH the "I don't wanna swatch" and the twin, "you don't need to block". Those Sisters gotta GO! I love swatching, measuring, washing and blocking my small practice squares. That is how I fell in LOVE with Happy Place OG. I kept putting my washed and dried swatch over my arm, and pushing my friends to feel How Soft and drapey it was. And remember the time my husband put my finished sweater in the washer? I freaked, but knew that it would be fine. Just lay it back out, and when nearly dry, warm it up in the drier. My favorite spring and fall sweater, for sure. I am not sure about hexi sweaters. I have one I purchased from a friend and when I wear it, the sleeves catch. I have your pattern of the Hexi and hope to make it in 2025 with the mods I want. I am inspired by the two of you, always. Thank you, KC

I agree that the wooble kits are overpriced. However, when I was a beginner, I really appreciated the obnoxiously detailed video tutorials that they included, and it gave me a lot of confidence when I actually created a thing. I also felt like I came away from it with an understanding of how to read patterns and construct amigurumi. But my God I would not pay $13 for a skein of that yarn 🤣 you guys have the loveliest voices and I loved listening to you chat!

My mother was dyslexic; but, it didn't stop her from reading patterns, to stitch up beautiful pieces of love. Since, my mother passed away, in January 2019, you are one of my favorites, who helped me learn how to crochet, in 2019; but, you (and other KZbin makers) also helped me learn how to read a pattern, on my own. If my dyslexic Momma could read patterns, to stitch up beautiful gifts, so could this visual learner. It just took practice; and, I cranked out so much in those first two years, after my mother passed. Thank you, both, for being wonderfully real. 🥰

On scratchy natural fibers… I recently found a vintage skein of grey “lambs pride” wool in my grandmas old things and it was so rough. I decided to make it into a little bag and just ended up blending it with a softer yarn. My other idea was a pencil cup. 🤣

I’m so happy you highlighted the use of acrylic yarn. I love to knit and crochet but don’t have the budget for ‘natural fibres’. I was thrilled to join a knitting group only to be ostracized for using acrylic yarn. 😂

I loved it when Mama Gwen said AI has no soul. Pitch Woobles and Ai paterns.patterns. I made a bandana in Christmas colors for my head because we are not allowed to wear hats. I made it from Peaches and Cream cotton, and I get so many compliments. I followed a tutorial on KZbin I don't remember who it what the pattern is. I love it. Crochet and Knitting are a stress reliever for me. The few times that someone asked me to make something for them that they would pay me to make it made it so stressful and took the joy out of it. I want to do more this year is things for charity. I want to make less UFOs.

When my mom was dying of leukemia, I was making hats for her and other patients and my sister, a nurse, told me specifically to use acrylic on some b/c there are always folks who can't tolerate the wool and cotton isn't warm enough for hats for cancer patients. I'm a yarn snob, but only when it comes to stuff I wear. If someone wants acrylic, I'm down. People need to lighten up. It's not anyone's place to judge anyone else's yarn choice. P.S., you and Mama Gwen are so fun to watch.

I made the Kima cardi when it was part of the Crochet Academy- I felt guilty for not following your pattern exactly- but now I feel like you two have validated what I did. I left off the pockets & lower ribbing! I’m a shortie- 5-0. I thought it would be overwhelming for me if I put the lower ribbing & pockets on it. I get compliments on it every time I wear it, such a great pattern! 😊
