I literally learned how to drift on a sim. Also VR is an utter game changer nowadays, cheaper and better than multi screens.

There's pros and cons with VR (we have VR on our work sim so we're in a pretty good place to compare). We started out with an oculus Rift and it was ok but the resolution is nowhere near as good as triple 32" 2k monitors. We've just upgraded the Oculus to an HP VR 3000 and it's a huge step forward from the old oculus. My personal take is that VR is still perhaps 1-2 generations away from being a clear winner - Andre

while VR is pretty cool, most of the lads doing enduros have gone back to trips as the is a fair bit of button pushing.

VR would need motion gloves or something similar so you can see your hand motion to press buttons, twist knobs or just actual hand position in general, or a AR headset with a green screen overlay would be a good alternative

This is timely for me. I've just got into the world of sim racing. I'm only one step up from the bottom though, I've got a specific chair and monitor setup but not a decent wheel. Once I get a decent wheel/pedal/shifter I think I'll stop there for a while and practice.
@hpa1013 жыл бұрын
There's always a fine line between spending more money on the gear you're using and just getting more seat time. From my own perspective upgrading from a logitech pedal setup to the Simworx load cell pedals was the biggest single improvement. We went from a logitech wheel to a simucube which was a big step forward but not as big as the pedals - Andre
@skippy29873 жыл бұрын
@@hpa101 I'll be upgrading to a G27 (yup...) to maintain ps3 compatibility initially, and also because my sim setup was specifically designed to take one of those and roof-hinge the pedals. I've just seen a pedal spring/sensor replacement that mimics load cell, so that will be my first upgrade. Once I ween myself off the PS3 and get really into the PC sims I'll move on to a better wheel setup, but I imagine that will take a while. All I really want for the moment is to be able to race my Aussie competitors in iRacing and keep my car handling sharp for when I inevitably get back on the racetrack here in NZ. I saw briefly in your video "highlands" displayed on a track-side item. Was that Highlands Park in Cromwell? If it was, what sim was it in? I could definitely stand to get some practice in on my most local track (I'm in Dunedin).

@@hpa101 I also have the Simworx pro pedals, hoping for a better experience than I was currently having, I was looking forward to installing them. But, after a short while, I started to feel a resistance in the throttle pedal like it was stuck, that was present when coming off the rest position as it is pushed with my foot. Do yours feel nice and smooth?

Interestingly when we visited Jota Sport in the UK (LMP2 team) they purposely chose a non-motion sim. Their reasoning is that a motion sim actually requires the motion to be dialled in to the individual driver so they can sense what the car is doing. It's not as cut and dried as it may seem. One of McLaren's F1 simulator drivers was at Jota at the time for a seat fitting and echoed these statements, even with McLaren's budget - Andre

@@hpa101 That's interesting, I have experienced impressive detail in a flight sim where you could feel the plane drop and lift as it went through air pockets. The same sort of detail in sim racing is possible, even down to feeling when the tyres are on the curbs, and when the curbs are wet, it slides, the trick is being able to respond quick enough with the steering wheel lol

I know theres two different models on the web for highlands and the one made by tech consulting for rf2 seems to be alot closer than the one available for assetto as well!

Do you think there's anything to be said about using sims to get over the "seat of the pants" limit? Newer drivers (and me still after 18 years in a kart where you move around a lot with no belt haha) feeling the G force of a turn and saying "thats fast enough", even though there's more to be had in the car? Obviously in a motionless sim you won't have that feeling and you can focus on pushing your braking points deeper. I have yet to use a good sim let alone put the hours into it to get a feel for them.
@hpa1013 жыл бұрын
That's a real hard one to answer, I think if you're having issues with that you really want to start getting some data and looking at your traction circle and driving techniques etc The sim can only help with so many things and confidence in your personal vehicle is something it would only get you so far with. I would even recommend going as far as getting a professional driver to spend a bit of time in your car setting some reference laps that you can use the data from. For karting it might be easier to just grab data off a faster driver since comparatively they are going to be similar. Learning a specific track and where to late or early apex and consistency around that etc is something it will help you with much easier for example - Taz.
