That's what I was thinking too as I was watching this, this really would've benefitted so much more as a television series, it's not terrible, but it's not the best and left a lot more questions than answers. It honestly would've made a really great thriller. I don't know why some directors don't think psychological horror/thrillers won't make it as a television series. My main problem with the movie wasn’t even the acting of everybody but Pugh but rather how Olivia didn’t really seem to understand how mysteries work in a movie. The movie basically from minute 1 on rubs it into your face that there’s something wrong which kinda defeats the purpose of being mysterious when you already know that something‘s wrong. They should’ve kept the movie more ambiguous and use the final act as a resolve for the mystery instead of basically telling you from the start that there’s something wrong but then keep it ambiguous in a pretentious way to add length to the movie.

I just saw it for the first time. It’s not a bad movie, not by any stretch of the imagination. But when you break it down, there’s really nothing special about it. This movie is an excellent example of style over substance. You can have the best DP, the best costume designers, and the best actors in the business. But that means nothing if you don’t have a strong story to balance all that out. It felt like Wilde was trying to create her own modernized take on “The Stepford Wives”, but neither her, nor anyone involved stopped to think about what it was that made that movie so great.

The whole "die in the simulation, die for real" thing is the most confusing aspect of this. Why is that even a feature? The part about him dying in Victory equating to him dying in the real world is an interesting bit. I didn't even catch that plot hole when I watched the movie myself. However, I think the concept of dying in the simulation which causes you to die in the real world, in this movie reminds me of what happened in the first season of Sword Art Online. Essentially, the use of nerve gear (think really fancy and advanced VR headset) allowed them to fully dive into the games and move around seamlessly (like in this movie). However, they end up trapped in the game and if you died in the game you died irl. This was possible because (and don't quote me on this it's been a while since I've watched SAO) the nerve gear was able to connect to their nervous system as it put them in a temporary paralysis to keep their in-game movements from happening outside which could cause injury. So when they died in the game the gear essentially fried their brain resulting in their death in the real world. So long story short, I wonder if that's what they were playing at here but because we were rounding up to the end of the movie they just sort of glossed over how their death in Victory would translate into the real world. But using this logic, you don't have to replicate what killed them in the simulaiton. So even though the dude gets stabbed in the simulation, his physical wounds don't necessarily have to mimic that. He's just dead.
@MyLittlecat1

The nerve gear would shock them to death basically. The electricity wasn't properly adjusted so the headset would kill them through static.

YESSSS! THANK YOU FELLOW SAO WATCHER! ALSO, it makes sense for u to die in real life if u die in VR. It's like when u die in ur dreams ur likely to die in ur sleep. That's why the brain wakes u up before u die (like when ur falling but wake up before u hit the ground) if the mind believes ur dead, then it will stop transmitting signals to the heart. This would’ve been a great episode of Black Mirror. But as it being a Hollywood movie it fell flat. I think this movie had too big of a budget than what it deserved and that messed with the writing and directing. The car chase scenes were silly, the plane crash was left unexplained, the characters didn’t have much development and it was hard to feel a connection with them. A great thriller makes the audience feel uncomfortable but intrigued, the lines of discomfort could’ve been pushed so much more to make this film better. Focus more on deep hypnosis and the reality of women and children being put in here against their will.

Honestly, this movie had the potential to be really amazing, like someone said, probably would've made good for TV series rather than a movie. There were just little touches and nuances I wished they touched on more. Like Margaret's son being 'taken away to punish her', like I want to know why she flew off the handle and ran off with her kid. Yes, I know they said it's because she saw something in the desert, but why did she go with her son? I hate it's just brushed aside and we don't hear or see Margaret again after the party scene--she and her entire story is just swept off as some ominous and literal housewives tale. The other wives too, like Peg who starts to question exactly WHAT their husbands do at work and what that rumbling is about, why are the children treated like stowaways? It's little nuances and incidences like that that are just swept aside and never really explained.
