I think people underestimate how great your ears are. You cannot recreate songs with this much accuracy without being able to hear the intricacies of the original performances. As a music teacher, I am often more impressed with being able to hear what makes a performance sound the way it does. On top of that you can actually execute it to boot.. amazing job man, truly. Thanks for giving me so much to listen to.. over and over again.

To the 74 jerk-offs who gave a thumbs down: what is your freaking problem? Is it the song you do not like? Personally, I’m not crazy about the song either. I was tired of it in the 80s. But you cannot deny the snazzy of this version. One guy and an acoustic guitar did a whole lot better than all 74 of you put together ever could. Every nuance. Every breath taken. Captured the mood and atmosphere of that song and made it even more spiritual. Somehow.. I have recently been paying close attention to Mike’s videos here on KZbin. Years ago I was exposed to the Africa cover like everyone else but I put it aside for way too long, and only recently with Weezer’s version being so popular I stumbled back in to this page only to discover all these amazing covers that just leave me speechless every time I hear them. I don’t know how he gets them all so perfect. I don’t know how he remembers all the cords and all the lyrics so well. I like to consider myself a person who pays attention to those types of details, but I can’t even remember all the songs I actually like near as well as he does.

+TheBaronessIsAwesome Haha. With a crooked Billy Idol sneer to boot, eh. You know Billy Idol was approached about recording it before Simple Minds? Idol ended up recording it years later as filler on a Greatest Hits compilation or something like that. He did it well, but Jim Kerr and the 80s synth sounds of Simple Minds with Mel Gaynor rocking the drums owned it. Mike always nails his covers. No Billy Idol implications or parallels intended.

My wife and I traveled from Minneapolis to Evergreen to see Mike at the Little Bear. It was AWESOME. Mike's a gracious guy and hearing a good chunk of the KZbin video songs in person was beyond a treat. If you can make it to the Little Bear do it. You won't be disappointed. I love this song. I LOVE Mike's version (I won't say "cover"). I don't care for Simple Minds' version. Simply put, it sounds like it was performed by five guys who didn't want to be there that day. "Don't You" needs to be played with PASSION. Angst. Interest. Intensity. The person singing needs to care deeply. Mike does. It's a shame Jim Kerr was too young and immature to realize what he had in his hands when he walked into a recording studio in 1985.
