Bio
Donald McCullin is a British photojournalist widely recognized for his impactful images capturing war, conflict, and poverty around the world. Born on October 9, 1935, in Finsbury Park, London, McCullin grew up in poverty and joined the Royal Air Force as a photographic assistant in 1953.
After leaving the RAF, McCullin began working as a photographer for The Observer in 1961 and later became a regular contributor to The Sunday Times. He covered some of the most significant conflicts of the 20th century, including the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, the Northern Ireland Conflict, and the Falklands War.
In addition to his war photography, McCullin is known for his documentary work, capturing the lives of people living in poverty and deprivation in places such as India, Africa, and the UK. His images are often dark, gritty, and emotive, conveying the harsh realities of the world in which we live.
McCullin has won numerous awards for his photography, including the World Press Photo award and the CBE. He has also published several books, including "Don McCullin: The Impossible Peace," "In England," and "Shaped by War."
McCullin retired from war photography in the 1980s but continued to work as a documentary photographer. He is also a keen landscape photographer, and in recent years has focused more on this genre of photography.
