I found your channel last night and learned a few things. I went up into my attic today and found active knob and tube surrounded by blown in fiberglass insulation, romex feeding hidden cloth wires that run down to switches and a hidden flying junction for knob and tube. I also found an old black wire that was live and the cut end was sticking up out of the insulation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep the videos coming.

Sandy Kirk A knob and tube Rewire replaces all cloth wires with new Romex wire. No splicing into old.....that’s a dangerous situation you want no part of.

I love when tradesmen know enough about the underlying principles that "up to code" is the minimum, and they're thinking more about the difference between code and quality.
@DonaldMillerElectric
@DonaldMillerElectric 3 жыл бұрын
For tradesmen code is the minimum threshold to meet. Morals and ethics can carry you far above just code. Enough above to have the ability and talent to sniff out a hack by how he places his wires in a box, or cross gauges for no reason, or not tighten his locknuts, or not hammer his staples in correctly, or stab an outlet, or tap onto knob and tube. Etc etc
@ncooty
@ncooty 3 жыл бұрын
@@DonaldMillerElectric: Exactly, you seem like the kind of tradesman who can tell a homeowner, "Well, it meets code, BUT... " and then explain the value of doing a better job. As opposed to the guys who say, "It meets code," as if that's the end-all be-all. And then, of course, there are all the guys who think the code is stupid and they're just trying to make it look good enough to pass a quick inspection. Homeowners are often screwed, because although you always pay for what you get, you don't always get what you pay for... and they can't tell the difference.

@@ncooty It’s the homeowners responsibility to find an electrician they can trust, if they choose wrong it’s on them. We educate our clients and they end up a repeat customer. Our job is to inform them, but not force or scare them.

12 to a 14, is not good, a 14 is good for 15 amps and if the 12 rated for 20 is at full load, it means the 14 gage is overloaded by 5 amps. modern wire for homes is good for 192 degrees F. If twice its rated current flows through it, it will reach 768 degrees. And if by chance an old fuse panel was replaced by an FPE panel with stab-lock breakers, now you have an overheated wire that is protected by a breaker that has a good chance of NOT tripping. Frankly, the old-style fusebox was pretty safe if not overfused or double lugging, two ckts off one screw. Old term pulling the mains, The mains were two large cartridge fuse in a porcelain or bakelite brick with a handle, pulling the mains or range was a total disconnection, whereas a circuit breaker, tho not likely could have power on the load side when its handle was in OFF pos.

A 12 and a 14 under a wire nut isn't illegal by itself.
@DonaldMillerElectric
@DonaldMillerElectric 4 жыл бұрын
Brock Werner The only way a 12 and 14 can be under one nut is if the 12 is downsized at the breaker to 15 amps. I have yet to experience a code compliant wire connection with two different sized wires in a knob and tube house. When inspecting existing work, I inspect based on the law of averages and the quality of installation. A mechanic willing to connect two different sizes under a nut will also do other unethical practices exposing the character of said mechanic.

Holee crap a 12 to a 14? if fused for a 15 amp, to me its not bad, would've been nice if gage was consistent throughout but if fused for 20 amps, yeah that is bad.

Yeah a good 'lectrician would clean up after his work and not have wire that was butchered. it seems that wire when in place for 40 years has a chance of breaking when wires are pushed and pulled in and out of boxes.I'd rather take the time to wrap the wire around the screw.

This is exactly what the electricians are going to do at my house. they're removing the knob and tube and their splicing it in boxes to the walls they're not removing the knob and tube in the walls.

Safe means to install electric to code, if it is to code then it is safe. If we go by what you think is safe then we are relying on your knowledge of only what you know, that is dangerous especially if your a dumb jackass.
