The reason people are finding it hilarious isn't because he retracted his story. The reason people find it hilarious was that he first tried to cast shade at the competition by saying they're fabricating news to make Trump look bad and then immediately did a 180 and started to find justifications for why even if the shade was indeed cast rightfully, it really wasn't actually a bad thing and Trump had every right to do what he did. That's not "retracting", that's damage control.
