Just to clarify: there's nothing wrong with swimming in itself, but the local custom at that time was to swim in the nude, which is disgusting. It was becoming a major problem in Turin because during the summer, every creek or muddy roadside ditch was a near occasion of sin for passersby: there were immoral people swimming everywhere. At the Oratory, swimming was synonymous with lewd behavior and so was forbidden. I'm sure they were allowed to swim while appropriately covered and under supervision, but the Biographical Memoirs of Saint John Bosco doesn't address this difficult subject very much, respecting the reader's innocence of mind. Purity was Don Bosco's #1 concern.

Good explanation. People always interpret according to modern beliefs and irrelevant to the background of that time

I subscribed to too many channels. And after few years, I'm discarding the ones that are just noise and sink and bait. This chanel is a keeper. Too many so called " Catholic Faith" but it's all to make money, they may have good intentions, but most of them is using Religion to sale something! I was disgusted when I visit the St. Patrick Church in NYC, there's a store inside of the church. I visited, it, but didn't give in for the bait.

I recently discovered this channel, it has been a wonderous experience watching some of these! I have learned so much! Don Bosco is my Confirmation Saint, so he is very close to me, however I admit i did not choose my Confirmaton Saint with much care, so I can only assume the Lord guided my decision. I am thankful he did! The words of Saint John Bosco truly speak to my soul, and have greatly helped me in my journey with Christ! God bless you, Mr. Miller, and Saint John Bosco, pray for us!

@@donboscostories , Thank you for correcting me. I somehow had it in my mind that there were KZbin commercials proceedings your videos. I remain pleased that there are no advertisements as I’m sure you have to pay extra monies to KZbin for that feature. Blessings to you tomorrow on the feast of Dominic Savio, and one of my favorites, Saint Francis of Rome.

Fantastic work, Matthew! Your recounting of the beautiful dreams and events from the life of the Saint is truly inspiring. May God continue to guide you in your mission to spread the message of faith through the lives, dreams, and events of the Saints, and may you remain steadfast in the face of various temptations that might hinder you in this endeavour. Ave Maria!

Nude swimming or “skinny dipping” wasn’t just a local custom, but pretty much the commonly accepted universal practice until sometime in the early to mid 1900s. Look at paintings from the 1800s by artists like Eakins, etc. It could possibly be an immoral practice, but not necessarily automatically one. Even up to the 1970s, males swimming naked at the YMCA was the rule, even sometimes in the presence of female swimmers who were required to wear swimsuits (there are vintage photos for those who don’t believe it). It’s still a common custom in rural swimming holes back in the woods. If anyone is shocked by this, there’s a lot of swimming holes in Vermont they shouldn’t go near.

Makes you wonder what those boys did DURING swimming that made Dominic stop swimming the second time. EDIT: Okay now I know. Skinny-dipping. Yeah gross
