I remember this day as an 8 year old. The electrics were brand new to Doncater. They wheeled the 91 up before the event and this was the first time most people in the town had seen one. The 89 had been doing some time on the Leeds service prior to this. I remember the station being busier than this looking back. We jumped on a HST service to York straight after Mallard left and we overtook in on the approach to York station. I remember the shot with Mallard alongside the 91 was on the cover of the Doncaster phone book the year after.

gorgeous bit of film i love all i see mallard, executive livery, swallow livery too, and the avocet 89001 wow, like a dream for me this, wish the rails were still like this, should never have been privatised its a disaster what happend, also the disaster that the NRM i hear ruined mallards boiler leaving the water in to rott a V into it , i heard she will never steam again. sad, good to see this though

Thank you for this awesome upload! :) Is the Locomotive at the start a Class 89? I've never seen it in my life and it's great to finally have the oppurtunity! :D

Nice - remember it well - were on the top level of the car park north of the station

The Intercity Exec. livery was really nice. Much more tasteful than 99% of the eyeburners these days. I hope we can see some rakes kitted out with it soon.

Is that an observation car at the back of the train? Its interesting seeing Mk1s in the Intercity "executive" livery.

89001 was stabled in the north facing bay for the rest of the day along with 91003 which was hauled from the middle road.

In a way I think the 89 does kind of look a bit like the mallard. The front end kind of takes inspiration. I do think the 91s are better looking overall though. Nice bit of footage.

Hope to see you at the NRM tomorrow for the 75th anniversary! Failing that, watch the One Show tonight on BBC1. Cheers, Paul

@mysteriouskazakh All the BR liveries were pretty nice, even the original HST one! But the Exec was imo the best since the early two tone Green. Very few operators have decent liveries now

I thought they would have swapped 89001 at York

Cazkumali Mallard was built at Doncaster and it was the 50th anniversary. The class 89 and 91 on display were to compare old and new although the Class 91 is now old, well oldish!.

It would have made sense to change locos at York, but electrification of the ECML hadn't reached York at that point, so that's probably the most likely reason why Mallard took over from 89001 at Doncaster instead.
