Don - I’ve been watching your videos from Australia for months now - and have to say they are the best cab view vids on YT. Your added comments on the drivers’ skills and processes and meticulous historical research are what sets them apart. I love local hauled trains - I used to love the 50s and 47s that dragged the Hereford-London route which was my local line - and so this brought back happy memories. Thanks for all your efforts in making such quality experiences - like many I’m very impressed - and grateful.

@@doncoffey5820 There was a 68 stopped just short of Batley signal box at the new signal on the down line the other day. Quite a sound as she opened up. Think there may have been an axle counter failure in the tunnel so it was there a while.

Really nice to see the 68 in active service. That is one good looking machine. Your on-screen comments/information are as good as gold as always. Gives usa wider view of the work of a train driver, and he has the best view of any office in the world. Prove me wrong!

The acoustic insulation on the class 68 is amazing considering there is a V-16 CAT purring and sometimes growling away just a few feet behind the cab. Fantastic video.

Fantastic video on a mostly familiar line. Glad the Class 68/Mk5A sets are keeping the loco hauled action alive. Like the 125 HST's, what I consider 'proper trains', it makes the journey that bit more special in my humble opinion. Thanks for the informative videos. 👍

As usual, Don, another interesting and informative video. It is a privilege to be able to sit in the cab and see so much. It is good that people all over the world can see parts of my beautiful native county of Yorkshire. You mentioned the word “riding”, it simply means a third, hence the three tidings. Thank you Sir, for posting this awesome video. I come from Germany and therefore, being a country of mostly electric trains, we no longer have the pleasure to listen to diesel power on rails. Railways in England, for me that is mostly the Heathrow Express to London, a nice EMU but nothing to be compred with these trains. Keep on riding and filming and thanks again

Wow , nothing like a new train , the sound of that engine , music to the ears . One thing that seems to be forgotten is the signalling technology , without it ,no railway can run . I'm a loco driver in Hungary, and I've always dreamt of driving these British locos. My dream is halfway through because my company owns old BR Class 86 and Class 56 locos that I get to drive, however, I'm still wondering if I could get a job as a driver in England. Great video anyway, and very informative!

Put it this way, the train companies can’t get enough drivers. If you look at the local operating company at the area you like, you can register with them. Don’t bother with the national operators as they rarely start new intake drivers, they just cherry pick experienced drivers.

I've travelled on one of these 68s and the acceleration from a standing start is incredible, I'd no idea they were Cat Powered, I've driven 2 Cat Powered Foden 8 Wheeled lorries which were outstanding to drive and totally reliable, I did over 500,000 miles in those two trucks with no engine problems whatsoever so it's no wonder they use CAT engines in these.

Don Coffey. Hi Don, if you thought the Gardner 180s were slow you should have tried the 200 and 230 Turbo Gardners running at 30 tonne gross in the Buxton Hills. They were a joke and downright dangerous because other trucks were constantly trying to overtake me because of the slow progress I was making, the Rolls 280 Fodens were brilliant until CAT came on the scene and evened things up a little.

Thanks again Don. As an aside to our previous conversation regarding cruise control, I made two identical trips by car between Birkenhead and Cardiff using cruise control as much as possible one way and not at all next time. The cruise control cost around an 8% penalty in fuel consumption - it can't anticipate gradient and other conditions very well. Being all for a quiet life, I accept the fuel penalty most of the time!

Nice to see a TOC investing in loco hauled trains instead of infernal DMU’s. Malton station originally only had the one platform ( the remaining one ) but I believe the North Eastern Railway added one outside the overall roof on the up line which BR removed when the line to Pickering and on to Whitby was closed. I was always rather surprised that Railtrack were allowed to remove the overall roof at Malton, it rather detracts from its appearance. I believe only a few of these typical NE overall roofs survive, mainly I think on the line from Seamer to Hull. BTw, the clock tower on Scarborough station isn’t original but was added at a later date, I’ve always thought it detracted from the architecture of the original building.

I was intrigued to see that, apart from different trees and house shape, I could have been travelling through my home state of Victoria, Australia, especially with all the level-crossings.. A video to watch again!

Fantastic - and so very informative. Thank you. I saw this loco being trialled out as I waited on my bicycle at Howsham crossing, I think it was last summer? The signalman told me all about it. I cycle around the area a lot, but today I followed your video on my indoor bike.

What a great video, thanks. You pass Scarborough Terrace on the approach to York where we had our first house. Our cat used to walk up and down the line there, and sometimes go to sleep between the tracks! The trees have grown enormously since the mid 1990s too.

Lovely signalboxes at Kirkham Abbey and Howsham Gates. Did you know the reason for the detour around the hills at Kirkham Abbey and Huttons Ambo was to save the expense of tunnelling and also to get the line open in the shortest time possible? Also just north of Malton a line went over the top, (with a connection from the Scarborough line), from Pilmoor on the ECML to Market Weighton. This line was used extensively for holiday traffic to Scarborough and Whitby, mainly to avoid York. It involved a very complex reversal and shunt to gain access to the Scarborough line and vice versa. At Rillington, a few miles east of Malton, what is now the North Yorkshire Moors railway used to branch off towards Pickering. Malton is a strange town, for one side of the River Derwent stands Malton and on the other side stands the town of Norton! Another interesting thing about Malton station was that it once had a sliding platform which was put out when a York train was due. There was also a bay platform at the east end, (where the supermarket now stands), for Whitby trains.

@@doncoffey5820 Its a fascinating route Don, really underrated. Still a magnet for traditional signalling too. Also I forgot to mention just north of York, at Burton Lane there was a former junction to the right with a line that served Foss Islands. There was also a halt on the branch, at the Rowntree Sweet factory where BR used to run a timetabled service to and from for the workers. A bit further on at Bootham Level crossing the line to Hull via Market Weighton and Pocklington used to branch off to the right. This line joined the Hull to Scarborough line just to the north at Driffield.

Excellent as always. I gather that the Class 68 is not an easy engine to drive. (I have it on my train simulator and I have not yet mastered the brakes, usually ending up in an embarrassing stop with my virtual passengers' virtual coffee ending up in their laps.) Like you and all your colleagues, Steve is a top-rate engineman.

I started learning 68s before taking the job share so never actually drove one coupled to a set of Mk 5s. I’m told that getting used to them is “challenging”. For many of the stops they make, the train has to be positioned precisely due to limited platform lengths.

I have travelled the York Leeds section behind steam many times and have always wondered what a drivers eye view of the route would be like. Thank you very much for posting such a fantastic video. What did surprise me was the time from York to Leeds. Unless I worked it out incorrectly it was 31 mins. The best run I ever had was behind Leander in 31 mins and that had 11 coaches. I would have thought a 68 with 5 coaches would have been much faster.

Many thanks Don and Steve for putting me back in the cab...it's been a few years (I used to drive down here in New Zealand when we still used the DFT (turbo) amoungst other Locomotives for freight services. Is that a turbo I can hear whistling away when Steve notches up? The sound of that lovely CAT grinding away under load makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end!... And I must say Don what a beautiful looking Loco! ...And Steve probably thinks everybody is looking at him...!!!! I note the Engineering on those points as well Don...can you imagine the asymmetric and vertical loads put on those points every time a rail vehicle crosses them at speed... fantastic stuff. Please thank Steve as I know you would not be allowed to do this here for the possibility of distraction. All the very best Gentlemen - please keep them coming! Kind Regards, Dennis (Whangerei, New Zealand).

Thanks Dennis - I’ll tell Steve but I think he will see this. I must say I was kind of surprised by being allowed to film but actually TransPennine Express and the other companies have been fantastic with other companies that we haven’t filmed with yet also being supportive. The 68 does have a huge turbo on it and yes that is what you heard. There is no doubt those points are an amazing feat of engineering.

These new ones are really asthonishing. A very good construction as ist seems. But nothing can ever compare to a Class 55 "Deltic". This was the all time peak of British diesel-locos. Here in Germany we had nothing that could match them. Yes, one single V320 and one single V300, that was all....
