I was racing B sedan and GT 2 in Canada at the same time on the same track's Gilles was racing Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic , it was an honour to watch the greatest driver of all times . I saw him race at Mosport , the "Glen" and Hockenhiem in '79 . I met him at Watkins Glen and he was just as humble as he was when he raced Formula Ford , he took time to talk to me when he was racing for Ferrari and I will never forget that . Racing was was never the same for me after his death , that morning I was working on my car in my shop when I heard the tragic new's and I remembered him taking time to talk to an amateur racer and making me be a proud Canadian . Thank you Gilles ...R.I.P.

I just met him in the pits in 1979. took the time to talk to me and I was just a teenage fan. It was my first GP that I was able to attend. F1 was like a religion to me. Started watching on TV in 1971 and missed very few races from 1974-1982. But then a light went out and I lost all interest in F1 it never really came back until his son Jacques conquered the motoring world in the nineties.

Man your story almost makes me cry... You were lucky to have met the man. I hear he was "CRAZY" and other things. I refuse to believe it. he was ultra competitive of that I know. He died because he was betrayed and Gilles was a man of intense loyalty and dignity. He did not suffer fools lightly. OR people like Peroni or Enzo who betrayed him. His death was one of the biggest tragedies of all sports. I think to me it was the biggest tragedy. He was a great great racer and a fine man

Cara Ella, Gilles here in Bologna Italy is remembered from everybody. And me, a 52 years old Ferrari fan, was a teenager when Gilles was racing. He was the greatest talent ever. He was a pure man, fair, he was a hero for all of us, he had such courage and balls, Italians cannot resist to a man like this. Even Enzo Ferrari was so affectionated to him, like a real son. And like all heroes he died young and in a brutal way. I am cying even now, and not ashamed of it. He was our new Nuvolari, the crazy flying man form 30s. Gilles, we always remember you in Italy. I'm an old guy that has followed F1 from the mid 60's until now. Without a doubt Gilles was the most exciting driver ever. He tried to win every single lap that he ever raced even when he didn't have to. I always knew he would eventually die, but he was the most daring and dashing of them all. That is his legacy.

I too have watched F1 from the early 60's and I too always thought that one day he wouldn't make it. He pulled some great moves undoubtedly and many are shown on the video but there were many that were reckless to say the least. Most that comment here would have seen just his highlights but to have watched all his races for all his years you get a different prospective.

I am one of Gilles biggest fans. A talent never fully appreciated. One of F1 GREAT drivers bar none. Up there with Senna, Clark and Moss. I was very fortunate to see him win the 1979 South African GP at Kyalami. I had a photographer friend who gave me this beautiful black and white photograph he had taken of Gilles exiting Leeukop corner during the 1979 SAGP. In 1980, this photographer introduced me to Gilles after a Ferrari function prior to the 1980 SAGP which Gilles very kindly autographed the photograph for me. That photo now hangs in my study. Gilles and Jody were driving the diabolical 312 T5 that year which was one of the worst Ferraris ever raced by the Scuderia. But did Gilles ever give up? Hell no that was not in his nature. In the wet he was streets above his contemporaries. He won races in the turbo Ferrari which had power but handled like an ox cart. Gilles was great.

In that video, Villeneuve "flies" past Lauda, Prost, Piquet, Jones, Sheckter and Rosberg - people who massed no less than 3+4+3+1+1+1 = 13 (THIRTEEN !) championship driver titles altogether, between 1977 and 1993 ! Only Mansell and Senna are missing. This is completely mind-blowing. One has to recognize that when Villeneuve had strokes of genius, and when his car did not broke down, NOBODY on the track could resist him. He was such a daredevil and genius driver, much like Senna, really.

@@mulhamtaibani8157 Yes. They both got "out of this world" moments in qualifications. Senna at Monaco 1988 left Prost with his mouth agap. Least known: check "Villeneuve 1979 Watkin glens". He drove under torrential rains ten second faster than his team mate and world champion Jody Sheckter. Just like Prost ten years later, he was left aghast by Villeneuve driving.

The second best I think it is the battle between Senna and Mansell in Monaco 92, And in Monaco 88 race Senna was 55 seconds faster than Prost, and Prost was second! I remember I watched a video where Senna had an amazing qualifying time, Schumacher tried several and several times to break it but couldn’t! And Senna was in that Williams rubbish car! And Villenueve’s semi-drifting driving style was far beyond beautiful, this proves that greatness is not about records who mostly achieved by calculated driving style drivers like Prost and Hamilton, but it’s about what you do on the track.

I think Enzo Ferrari loved Gilles like a son. But I can't forgive him for cheating on him! After wonderful years as 2nd driver in the service of his team mate. When it was up to him to be the 1st pilot, everyone betrayed him, infamously! Excuse the outburst, but after 41 years I still haven't forgiven Ferrari.

I cant help but smile every time I see Villeneuve race. The way he tamed the infamous ferocious Ferrari finding gaps on the track that didn't exist. Not only was he an extremely gifted driver who was always on the limit but a true gentleman on and off the race track. The fact that his opponents spoke well of him says it all. They respected and admired him. Senna might have been the ultimate competitor but Gilles to me is and will always be the ultimate racing driver

xedor2003 Its a very touching thing that you kept the ticket, I wasn't alive when Villeneuve was racing and was only a kid when Senna died, but I feel like I missed out on something spectacular. When I watch F1 today and see people like Alonso and Vettel complain about horsepower defecits and team mates being unhelpful I feel like there is no love or heart in the racing anymore and when I come to watch videos of Villeneuve I see a man with such passion, how the world has changed.

Alex Drake Dear Alex, I hope that every era will have it's heroes, but I must admit that I feel lucky to have seen Senna & Prost battle it out at Suzuka, seen Senna's first win in the rain in Estoril, seen Mansell & Senna battle it out for the win in the last laps both in Monaco and Estoril, have seen Villeneuve drag his back wheel section for 4/5 of the Zandvoort circuit towards the pits and leave a blaze of firy sparks behind him 3 meters long, have seen Villeneuve in Spain keep 5 cars behind him and they all finish within 2 seconds, have seen Andretti & Peterson showing what loyalty looks like and I've seen Villeneuve and Pironi in Italy showing how an end to a friendship looks like. Formula One is better now because it is safer and safer is better. But we already heard these words in the 80's... If Max Verstappen has only half of the fighting spirit that his father Jos had and if he survives his first year in F1 than things might become interesting again. Mark.

Yes I know exactly what your talking about, everyone has been building him up to be the next Senna, I personally don't think he'll be on that level, but I certainly hope he proves to be a fighter. For me the only two things that I have found interesting in the past several seasons of F1 were the fact that Mercedes allowed Hamilton and Rosberg to fight each other, even though Rosberg cheated on two occasions, neither of which he was penalized for and seeing Ricciardo bitch-slap Vettel all over the place and forcing him out of Red Bull and even when Ricciardo was penalized and given sheet bad luck he just got back up without complaining and continued racing. I just wish all the drivers had such heart

I said that in that era making an overtake required more skills and there was, as an attacker, no button to press to have a moving rear wing that the defender is not allowed to use. There was less management and more full throttle racing. And since it was far more dangerous, it required more bravery. Is the modern safety wrong? No. Is it sad? In a way. That's all I'm saying. I watched the WWOS broadcast of the Arnoux vs Villeneuve race, and you just have to watch the whole race to get the perspective. The camera skipped the leader for what, 20 laps while it went on, and it was one of the finest examples of all out - yet trusting - driving I've seen outside a sprint car race. Truly fantastic. And after the race smiles and no rancor in celebration of an almost superhuman effort. There was no way Gilles could, on paper, keep up on the straightaways, yet he did, and attacked on EVERY corner at 100%. Legendary stuff. And afterwards, when he was interviewed, he was "What,me worry?" Like it was no big deal...

As a canadian myself, Gilles Villeneuve was my hero. But I wish that nobody forget that René Arnoux was quite a driver too. It takes two dancers to dance the tango, and that unforgetable show was possible because Gilles and René respected each other and were trusting the skills of each other. He said his days snowmobile racing forever prepared him to drive in the rain. On snow, he was absolutely blinded if anyone was in front of him so he said this experience helped him for rain driving.

I knew a guy who was racing agains Gilles when he was in snowmobile races. One day, he said to Gilles that his machine is way overpowered and thats why he wins. Gilles said "ok than, just take mine and i take yours and lets do couples of laps and we'll see". Gilles was way ahead and when they comeback from the track, Gilles just said "it's not the machine i guess" but in the funny way, not the cocky way. The guy tell me that it was his last season. He said to me "it's then i realize that i just cant compete with the top drivers so i just sell my snowmobile. I knew that i probly kill myself just to try to catch up with him. I just dont have the talent to perform at this level". Gilles was just above others. In snowmobile and in F1.

Villeneuve had a slow Ferrari, middle of the pack type... Somehow he managed to sneak to the top many times, and drive way closer to the edge than any other driver would. He was fast an spectacular, he was a natural. I admire his talent and his devotion..

The Ferrari flat-12 and transversale gearbox were almost indestructible (and quick). The problem was that the combination was too wide to fit a ground-effect car and make GE effective. Hence the 312T4 (and even worse, the 312T5) being mobile chicanes for the narrow 'V' engined full ground-effects cars.

Gilles was one of my favorite drivers back in my days of enjoying F1. Super competitive guy that showed lots of poise, talent and humility. As an young Argentinean, my driver was Reutemann, but it didn't upset me seeing Gilles win races; what a great driver!

How I miss the good old days of F1...!!! Just when my father and I thought they'd been gone with Fangio, one day there was Gilles to be grateful for. So so sad when he passed...! And then there was Ayrton. Whenever I watch him driving I think of Gilles; whenever I see Gilles, I remember Ayrton. There have been many excellent drivers, but it always seemed to me that Gilles and Ayrton were vibrating in a very different frequency from most of those ones'... May you both R.I.P.

Gilles Villeneuve was to F1 what Dale Earnhardt Sr. was to NASCAR... Absolute total dedication and focus on winning, honing their skills to a degree that few, if any have equaled and certainly none have surpassed since. I can only imagine what an IROC race featuring Gilles and Dale Sr. in equally prepared cars would have been like... RIP to both of them and sympathies to their families.

Dijon 1979 was a display of some of the greatest racing anyone has ever seen! Most of the race seemed uneventful to the casual observer, but Gilles and René were on fire that day. Arnoux had the better car, but Villeneuve was able to get more from the Ferrari than even his team thought possible. The back and forth battle for 2nd place was gripping!

Thank you Donfrak for that video. I'm french canadian and I will always remember his fatal accident, the news and the emptiness after is passing. He was a great driver, a little crazy sometimes but always spectacular ! I heard about him in Montreal, not far from his village. He was already crazy driving pickup trucks (on 2 wheels...) when he was young. Every one from that area knew him. French canadians journalists visited him in Italy and they were in for a huge ride in a Ferrari between the airport and home... Scary ride ! Of course, his "street" Ferrari was deeply modified and had a shit load of additional bHP... Have a great day !

I was in Zolder when he had his accident. Later that night we heard he pssed away. I didn't feel much to go racing the next day. Gilles was the man we all waited for to see at any race. he probably was the fastest natural driver of all times. Alltough i like Senna alot, i think Gilles was faster, but he didn't use his head enough. I hope in heaven there is a racetrack. Some great drivers are having great fun there right now.

The good old days of F1, they don't have drivers like Villeneuve, Senna, Mansell, anymore. F1 today is a complete bore, I use to love F1 , not anymore, it died for me when Senna died.. Thanks for posting that great tribute to a real driver, who had great talent, and most of all had balls !!

Nah, sorry but that doesn't compute. At all. I don't see how you can put Senna on that group. My all time favorite driver was Piquet, not just because of his driving, but also because of his (bad) temper, his funny mood, his mechanic abilities, etc. But he wasn't the best. The best will always be Gilles and Schumacher will always come out very close. I can add a second group with Jean Alesi, Mansell, Alonso (his last 4 or 5 seasons) and topping a third group I can put Hunt, Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Andretti, Prost, Jones, Stewart, Fittipaldi, etc. Notice how even in the 3rd group I put Piquet's name in front of Senna's. ROFL All I'm saying is that Senna thought he had god controlling his hands/feet when he was driving, and that's just plain stupid. All his talking about god at the end of the races made people start a kind of a cult, that's what it was. Punchline: Senna was more of a cult than a driver. He was good at it, he was fast, he had the best car whenever he won with the exception made to Estoril 86 or 87 (I'm Portuguese but I can't recall lol) and Monaco 85 or 86 when he didn't win but he would had won if J. Yckx hadn't waved Prost the chequered flag prematurely, Yckx himself having been a hell of a driver and never winning a championship. Senna's premature death, the fact that it happened at the wheels of an F1, and the fact that it happened during a GP, all that added to the fact that F1 entered a dark era in terms of circuit safety, car safety, blah blah blah, all that have contributed to a line of thought that Senna was the best driver ever, in front of GV and MS when in fact that's pure rubbish. End of rant. :-D
