it is mostly the skill of the artist that speaks, not the software people like to say: "this software is better" to make themselves feel better, but in reality most important features are included in all of those softwares, and the only REAL feature you need is your skill at drawing
@jjstarrprod

Same. I was more impressed by his consistency than any of the softwares features. In terms of just purely drawing, they look very similar, but as a user of TVPaint for more than 18 years, I can confidently say that the best of TVPaint lies in its near infinite amount of customization of its custom brushes and a lot of its animation targeted features and FX (the almost automatic color layer in the pro version is particularly impressive). It also have a storyboard and camera function (albeit a bit clunky, and not very intuitive to use), and a sound layers timeline for lip synch or animating on music beats, so it's basically a all-in-one 2D animation software. Although I've heard that Clip Studio Paint is catching up real fast for a fraction of the price.

I used a lot Krita for doing mainly Key animation scenes as an original drawing format, i recomend to use the SK1 and SK2 Ramon pencil brush bundle that they are officially released by Krita team dev channel, it was the most closely brushes they used for traditional animation for lineart, sketch and color pencils they used most for that type of work, its similar to the Stadlers ones i hope with the time Krita brush engine would improve a lot for turned the best animation 2D program.

@DongChang I think the reason why the brush in OpenToonz feels like it's lagging It's because of the "Smooth" slider is at 26.91 (here 6:22) That slider is only shown with the default brush, but it still affects the other brushes.

@lofwyr5063

yes and no, the smoothing will delay it a bit, but there's an actual hack in the codebase whose aim is to not overload OT with raster selection transformation calculations...and is implemented with a QTimer that only allows drawing every time the timer runs out, which is many times per second, but still laggy. Removing this timer makes raster drawing extremely smooth, but will terribly lag OT with selection operations and some other things. Source: I'm a tiny bit involved in OT and maintain my own badly hacked (I am not that good a programmer) version that has the timer hack removed..since I don't use the selection tool really... If you can read C++ source code then you can actually look for the QTimer yourself and confirm that I am writing the truth... The timer hack is trying to band aid an underlying problem that noone has yet fixed...but once that happens, it will be super snappy and smooth. If you can edit source code, you can remove the timer yourself too, perhaps and also confirm my statement as truth that way. I'd post the patch diff in here if I could but youtube does not like 'weird texts' like that.

That, and he might've used other presets that uses "mypaint" brush engine, which has its own set of setting sliders, and quite a many of basic mypaint presets opentoonz/tahoma2d offers as the 1st options in the preset list have smoothing on, which you have to adjust manually so that wouldn't be the case, and that's just another smoothing on top of that smooth slider you see above the canvas. So yea, put the smoothing to 0, and make the mypaint brush have 0 smoothing in its own settings. MyPaint setting for smoothing (at least one of them) is "slow position tracking"
@lofwyr5063
@lofwyr5063 6 күн бұрын
I don't know why my comments got deleted but tl;dr: the smoothing is one thing, but there's also an artificial delay in the source code at line 375 or something in the "toonz sceneviewerevents" cplusplus source file that only allows a maximum of 20 drawing updates a second. Without this the drawing is smooth but raster selection scaling and rotating becomes ultra laggy... so yeah.

You can also do the opentoonz color in the same layer thing in Krita. if you change the brush blending mode (next to the icon on the toolbar) to "behind" it will draw only behind the already drawn lines. You can also select by color using the similar color selection tool to delete or recolor. It's probably better to just use layers though. You can also use folders in krita which let you have a cleaner looking timeline, but also apply a lot of non-destructive effects, blurs, maps, even clone layers (for reflections for example). You can apply these effects to specific folders and it'll apply to the whole animation, you can even animate masks for the effects!

Im surprised you found the harmony brushes comfortable on your first time, i remember a lot of us in class feeling awkward using a vector drawing program for the first time. Even more surprising to me is you figuring out how the sub layers work since i have had coworkers that did not understand it when i passed roughs where i drew the shadow lines on them. Imo the software really opens up when you take the time to learn how nodes work but they’re locked behind the premium version. My take is that for just cel animation advanced is all you need mostly because shift and trace/tap-wari isnt on essentials. Would love a part 2 about clean-up and coloring and how you approach it in harmony like if youd find the setting to turn off a layers antialiasing and whatnot

Great overview and spot on advice: you can do good stuff with pretty much any software if you develop your skills. That said, one of my favorites is Rough Animator. It's inexpensive and you can get versions that work on tablets and desktop, so you can practice or work on your project across multiple devices in the same software. It's especially good for, as the name implies, rough animation, which can be finished in Rough Animator itself, or brought into other software for finishing.

Ive used both clip studio and TV paint pro and personally tv paint is just such a comfortable software to animate in - even if I prefer csp's brush engine. Just small touches like being able to manipulate the light table in non destructive ways (you can rotate/move previous frames to place and trace, so you can better keep track of some volumes) make it very smooth to use. Maybe I havent given csp a fair shot yet but it always feels a bit clunky and cumbersome to use imo. And I usually only draw in cps when it comes to illustration or drawing in general, just not animation. If you havent used tv paint more extensively yet, give it another shot I think its quite powerful imo
@Rarururu__
@Rarururu__ 8 күн бұрын
You can do exactly that in csp as well, just drag and drop a cel into the bottom of the cel tab (you might need to check it to appear first) and you’ll have a non-destructive way of using light table and it’s very versatile The biggest issue with CSP imo is the playback time

They need some serious usability improvements for animation, as their timeline and graphs can be a bit confusing compared to other animation software. Another thing that is missing is proper interpolation tools, as right now it's only supported for fading. Krita is very good for raster illustration work tho, just rather mediocre in the vector and animation departments. I wish they worked more closely with professionals to add necessary features for it to become industry standard.

Having used CSP for years, I agree that the folder system (and light scripting via Action Script) is a big plus. But you didn't mention the rather horrendous playback system. Once you get to a certain number of layers, "rendering" takes a very long time. When you add in some camera work, I found that I started to do a lot less playback (which actually turned out to help me pay more attention to the way I was working. But that's not the point lol). I am curious to know how the other software handle playback. I still love CSP, and with a bit of action scripting and proper folder organisation you can have an extremely efficient workflow.

Harmony, Animate and Krita have a very smooth playback system but like any other software, when your files gets too clogged up with drawings, colours and textures (and 2D riggings in some cases), there will be some lags going on when you try to render the playback. The only solution is to upgrade your graphics card or processor chip

as a beginner, its better to use the available brushes you have, get used to them and if you are serious, look up artists who use that same program and as you are doing now, ask them what brushes they like to use or recommend. I bought brushes, well too many, for procreate and i thought it was making me a better artist, but when I was in the learning phase, I used the brushes that came with procreate. Same with Clip Studio and Affinity designer and I realized that you shouldn't worry too much about brushes. Learn your engine as reasonably as you can and if you are not into making brushes, like me, then go out and buy some brushes if you can afford it. Also, depending on the artist, like Nadia Axle or even Marc Brunet, they have free versions of their brushes and I think Marc might have some brushes for you to buy. Hope this makes sense.

@@lemied23 What's wrong with Blender's Onionskin (light table) features that you had to develop your own plugin? Did you use it before onionskin was implemented or something? Btw I agree blender GP shouldn't be used for 2D-only animation, but then again blender never said you should. The whole point of it is mixing 2D and 3D
@lemied23

Onion skin is good for straight ahead animation like fx and simulations. But actually Character animation needs the ability to move the onion skin. To scale and rotate it as well. It's so important for keeping forms constant.

Hi Dong, Not too sure if anyone else asked but I figured I'd give it a go. Have you tried Blender's Grease Pencil animation software? I'm curious to hear about your thoughts on it if you have not explored it yet.

Krita is decent as long as the file doesn't get heavy and crashes the software.

I found the animation tools a bit unintuitive. It's especially difficult if you are importing image files (because I like to draw on paper and then import the scanned drawings into an animation software).

How heavy is "heavy"? I've done shots with a hundred or so frames of multiple raster layers. Takes up a few gigs in RAM but I can't say I've had big ssues yet.

That's a nice cover of these programs thank you. I agree with your view that the animator is more important than the software or tools they choose to use. Personally I am using Blender and trying to apply lessons that I learn from experts like yourself in the software of my choice. I wonder what your opinion is where in so many applications I see them asking that you be proficient in certain software that you may not use, even though you would still end up submitting work in common formats?

I use to ink my animation drawings, scan into the computer, and use Adobe Illustrator to convert them as ESP files for Flash. However, the lines would look kinda jaggy, and I'm straighten them out with the pen tool. It was kinda primitive, but that was how I use to do animation in Flash. Later, I got Clip Studio Paint, and A Wacom tablet, but I rarely used it because drawing with it doesn't feel as good as drawing with A pencil. Am I using the wrong pen nib, or should I use the Apple Pen with an Apple Tablet? Please let me know because I'm still not quite as ready to draw with A tablet yet.
