I wish I had realized it wasn't me 20 years ago when I gave up. But hey, I came back to it and this video honestly heals this little tiny deep emotional wound that I didn't realize was still kind of festering. It's one thing to come to that conclusion on my own, but having you one of the people I have been learning from on KZbin say it and say you've gone through it. Honestly, you have no idea how much that makes me feel better.
@Vite_Roy6 күн бұрын
I have a 3D printer and use the figure “dummy 13” by Soozafone for drawing. It’s anatomically fairly correct (I think) but mainly it has a lot of articulation so it’s great for posing. It has a wide community making mods for it too for example wings, extra arms,… you can easily print them at home or buy them online from retailers, and they’re just great to play with in general.
@LowQualityCoding6 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's a way better model for references. And if you already have a printer, it costs you almost nothing to print

One of the most validating videos I've seen. My mom tried to get me to use this when I was a kid and I pretty much straight up refused. Limited posing was my main concern but I definitely knew the proportions were not right, even at that young age.
@jamesthomas11236 күн бұрын
It can be used for learning to draw basic shapes in perspective. 3-D perspective is the thing that gives most beginners trouble. And it gives experienced Artist trouble also. The mannequin breaks down the most basic shapes, and then you can pose it and draw it in perspective Then, when you do learn the actual human form, you could put it in perspective from your imagination because that’s a separate skill. You’re welcome lol
@happypercussionist16 күн бұрын
Damn u right 🤔
@veryberry1006 күн бұрын
Yeah I was just going to comment this. It's for understanding shape and form it's clearly not a human model replacement. I have one and it's good practice for shading and perspective drawing.

I think the problem is the mannequin has the wrongest proportions for the basic shapes.
@SaHaRaSquad5 күн бұрын
Sure but you can also do that with a correctly proportioned model
@veryberry1005 күн бұрын
@@Abhishekisntreal The wooden art doll is not for teaching human anatomy or proportion. It's an inexpensive teaching tool for basic shapes. An expensive art doll can have "correct" proportions and shapes and better posing but it will never compare to studying a real human anyway.

I worked for an architect once who was also a really good artist, he used to draw his projects to show clients what the finished building would look like. Anyhow, he had one of those super-expensive hyper-articulated Japanese Spider-Man action figures to pose and it was fantastic. The toy makers engineered those action figures so that you can make almost any pose and it’ll limit you to what the human body can actually do. What’s more, Spider-Man is in a leotard so you can see the anatomy, and the web pattern actually helped with form and perspective. EDIT: oh, he covered it in the video

i've seen these around since i was really little and i've always wanted one. i mostly just have an issue with coming up with ideas for poses, and i find that fiddling with physical objects like dolls really helps me get a feel for that. sometimes i also just like sitting down with mannequins/dolls and messing with their joints, just to see what they can do.

4:40 something similar was told to me when I went to truck school regarding learning how to shift. It's easier to teach someone to shift a semi when they don't know how to shift a car because the transmissions types are different, so they require different shifting habits. For detail, a heavy duty diesel has 8-18 gears (10 is "typical" with higher gears for specialized trucks, i.e. heavy haul) with a splitter half way through. A car might have 6 gears, but it doesn't have a splitter. Biggest learning curve between them is clutching though. A transmission with a splitter is using an unsynchronized trans requiring double clutching (clutch-neutral--clutch-gear), while one without uses a synchronized trans, needing only a single clutch motion (clutch-neutral-gear)

if you need a reference model, stickybones for the most poseable figures you can get but proportions might not be what you are looking for, tbleague for models with better anatomy and body types, that can help you with light too as you can play with how you light them using smaller lights that what you would need for a lifezise model(it can teach you a LOT about source placement, cast shadows and consistency on multi light set ups), for hands, artist support tool hand model by kotobukiya(get the original if your budget allows, but if, not get the aliexpress bootleg, its good enough), Nothing replaces real people, but in case you neet to do things that you can't record yourself doing properly (flips and acrobatics for example, or things outside of your range of motion or poses that might be dangerous to attempt by yourself), these alternatives work wonders!

Went to a drawing course with a blank slate guy years ago, and can confirm he improved way more than anyone else, relatively speaking. He did have a great attitude towards learning though. My biggest issue with the mannequin (if you fixed the proportions and definition) is how the shoulders lack an articulation point, lots of people struggle with the shoulder motion and that aint helping. Someone else here mentioned Dummy13, I made one for fun but never used it for drawing, maybe cause i'm more obsessed with making my own version of it.

I do fashion in college and we use the mannequins to make miniature outfits or clothing pieces out of fabric. It helps show us how fabric falls when around a figure, it’s especially great for skirts and dresses. But overall, outside of a sketchbook page with a few mannequin pictures and draping experiments, it is quite useless. It’s only really useful if you wanna sew something with a limited amount of fabric but you don’t know how it will look and don’t wanna waste the fabric on a human sized mannequin if it goes wrong.

I have them as well. And they’re all right, I don’t use them for their intended purpose. I used to just decoration for my desks, and the hand model was set in a middle finger or a peace sign, depending on my mood. Now they’re in storage since I need space.

I have the body-kun/chan at 8:02 on my cart lol. But Clip Studio's 3D models are also hella useful -- and much better when you already have a good grasp of movement! The best teacher to me has always been watching real-life people.

I had one will ball joints that could move pretty well for poses, from very natural to some horror contortions! Didn't have the 'block hips' either so that the legs could move a bit easier and not be blocked. Sadly the thing broke, haven't found a replacement yet :(

Just wanted to note that there is a good hand model for drawing if you want one, its just not going to be cheap. The kotobukiya Artist support item hand model is actually meant for drawing, so the motion and proportions are a lot better than on the wooden ones. They do cost 150 dollars+.

If you want a good reference to use instead of those wooden mannaquins, then the best I found is Stickybones. They are fairly expensive, but well worth every penny.
