Great video Don. I’ve been making leather products for over 40 years. Every time I watch your video I learn something new. I’ve never made a saddle, but I’ve repaired a lot of harness gear for the family ranch. I love your common sense approach to construction… I’m a huge fan! Thank you for helping the leather trade improve…. Jim’s Leatherworks, Prescott, Az…..

Happy Thanksgiving Don. Nice video. I've been doing a bunch of bags with zippers lately. I was gluing but switched to basting tape. I found a super sticky one that'll stick to both fabric and leather well as long as you don't re-position too much. For me it's easier to keep things a little cleaner. You can press it down very lightly and then when you're happy with the position go ahead and press it firmly. I haven't had any issues with the tape gumming up needles either.

+Rex Jerome man that sounds cool I️ will have to try some of that! Does Lowe’s carry it?
@rexjerome59317 жыл бұрын
I actually got mine from Springfield leather. It is super sticky. Just search for "basting tape" on their website. They have it in 1/4" and 1/2" width. Works well on cloth or leather.

Don, this was a really great video. As a hobbyist, it was really nice to see some of the mechanics involved with using the sewing machines. Thanks for that. There isn't nearly enough of that on KZbin. It's always people just sewing on scraps. Your presentation of the steps and materials was flawless. It was also nice to see how you just kind of jumped in and manhandled the material when needed. I'm always kind of shy about that. Your tooling is beautiful. The music is great. But it comes across very loud in this video. I found myself having to the volume up and down during the video. (Just production critique). Anywho, I hope to see many more videos from your new shop. You really did a great job. I hope this encourages you to make more videos. I would love to just see an assembly video of a saddle going together for curiosity's sake. With just music would be fine. I hope you make more tooling videos as well. Your mannerisms and style really come across well on camera. Be confident and please please continue.

A soft charcoal pencil or moistened chalk works well to mark leather. Chalk of different colors can be used to on similarly colored leather to prevent a very noticeable mark. They both can be removed with a moistened rag or horse hair brush.

Hey there. Quick question. I am looking to make a leather harness for my 70 lb dog. What weight would be preferable to do this? I am looking at 8/9 oz and wondering wether that’ll be strong enough. She’s not a puller but I don’t want to risk the leather snapping if she does pull. Most people would say to buy one but she has dwarfism and therefore is unusually shaped and nothing bought fits her right. Too tight here, too loose there... I’ve made several mock-ups with old scraps of handbag leather and such, which is obviously way too light and chrome tan, to find a design I like and that fits her right. If the 8/9 oz wouldn’t hold up to a 70 lb dog pulling, what would you recommend? Also, where would be a good place to get some woolskin? My dog has very sensitive skin and the leather would have to be lined with it. I scoured amazon but I’m having some issues finding regular old woolskin like saddlers use. I wouldn’t need much of it. Just enough to line the chest and belly pieces of the harness where there could be pressure and/or chafing. Thank you to anyone who can answer these questions!
