The text of the reflection: Not everything real is quantifiable. One may say otherwise. But that is not because it is such, but because it is claimed to be such. And it certainly does not follow from science. Empirical Science - that which people typically call “science” - has chosen methods and tools. These, for very good reasons, exclude some aspects of reality and limit themselves to the quantifiable. To then claim that there are only things that are quantifiable would be like choosing all green teddy bears from an array of colourful teddy bears and later go on claiming that green teddy bears are the only teddy bears that exist. This can be done, of course, but it is hardly reasonable. Even the underlying claim that only those truths that stem from the natural sciences are true is self- refuting. Because that claim is itself not demonstrable through the natural sciences. Materialism, Naturalism or Physicalism are positions that can be held, but we have to understand them for what they are: ideological propositions, i.e., they start with an idea of the world - with a story of the world. As all stories they paint images and draw on emotions. Take this for example from the philosopher and theorist Herbert Spencer. He was convinced that the sheer size of the solar system should overawe our understanding of man as a spiritual creature. Forget the solar system. Look at the Cosmos! The infinite vastness of space makes man and all his does insignificant. That is a story. It paints an image and seeks to evoke an emotion contrasting Largeness and insignificance. One of my favourite authors, G.K. Chesterton responded with his usual whit: “Why should a man surrender his dignity to the solar system any more than to a whale? If mere size proves that man is not the image of God, then a whale may be the image of God; a somewhat formless image; what one might call an impressionist portrait. It is quite futile to argue that man is small compared to the cosmos; for man was always small compared even to the nearest tree.” Chesterton goes on in the same chapter of his book Orthodoxy asking why we would even speak of the universe as particularly large: “There is nothing to compare it with. It would be just as sensible to call it small. A man may say, 'I like this vast cosmos, with its throng of stars and its crowd of varied creatures.' But if it comes to that why should not a man say, 'I like this cosy little cosmos, with its decent number of stars and as neat a provision of live stock as I wish to see'? One is as good as the other; they are both mere sentiments. It is mere sentiment to rejoice that the sun is larger than the earth; it is quite as sane a sentiment to rejoice that the sun is no larger than it is. A man chooses to have an emotion about the largeness of the world; why should he not choose to have an emotion about its smallness?” The fact that something is large or small has no bearing on its significance. The tablets of stone with the ten commandments were infinitely smaller than mount Horeb from which they were cut. Yet the ideas they contain were so large that they span the world. People have said, that not only the size of the cosmos but the randomness of where we are in the universe - this average galaxy with its average number or stars - proves that humanity is unimportant. But this is the same mistake. It is making an ideological assumption. It is just a framing of a story. Think of your favourite story. There might be things in it that are completely random - or at least random given the laws of the universe the story takes part in. That Phileas Fogg wore a particular tie on a particular day may have no bearing on the story of his journey around he world in 80 days - other than illustrating the general laws that governed dress in a particular culture and era making us sure he wore a tie. There may also be things that seem random and unimportant at the time, but that at a later point are revealed to “rule the fate of many” to cite the words of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings alluding to a gesture of pity that would come in the end to determine the fate of the protagonists. That is to say: stories neither loose their meaning because they include aspects that are random to the story itself - aspects that may be simply owed to the laws that govern their universe. Nor can they be reasonably claimed to have no meaning because maybe the vantage point of the reader on page 50 simply does not yet enable him to discern the meaning of a seeming random circumstance that will come to bear on page 300. If both of these things are true of human stories, why would it be absurd to venture that they are true of the story of humans. Again, you can tell yourself that size invalidates meaning, but you would not be “spitting facts” or presenting “hard truths”. You would simple be telling a story - a bleak and some would say unimaginative story. But a story none the less. So what is the story of the tiny creature that is man in this very large cosmos? And does it matter?

The observation of the scale or greatness of things, and our place in relation to them, is exemplified for me in a film: The Power of Ten, 1977, which can be viewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpeuc5usec-or5I The film begins with a man and woman having a picnic, then zooms out into the cosmos and then back in again to the subatomic world in the hand of the man at the picnic. Both the macro and micro worlds look the same. To me it shows visually and poetically that we are not separate, greater or smaller, but rather intrinsically connected always to the totality of Being. This understanding is, I believe, why some of us look up upon the stars and a seemingly endless cosmos, and still feel at peace. It can of course be a bit disconcerting if we plunge too far into the infinite, because we are also subjects bound by our biological needs to this time and place. For as G.K. Chesterton also writes: "Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere." Perhaps humanity is the line drawn here. The art work. But unlike most mediums, such as paint, film, or marble, humans also get involved in the creative process by way of their knowledge and choices. Such as between good and evil. Thank you Fr. Johannes for sharing your philosophy and faith and enabling this comment section. - Christopher

I expected that you would know The Word ( bible) good enough, but I have to disagree and tell you the truth. It days, " the earth is flat, sits onnpillars and does not move". There is no space, planets etc. Praise YAHUAH.

You are a true Renaissance Man. Is there anything you can’t do? You are a skilled handyman, gardener, videographer and story teller. You can cook, you are an incredible painter and very organized and efficient. Most of all you are a remarkable, wise, generous, kind, intelligent and very humble man. Your videos are such a joy to watch. They bring so much peace to my soul. As a passionate gardener I enjoy your gardening content very much.

Much as I love the larger picture, small or large makes no difference. What really matters is, for example, the partnership you are designing on your mountain side. Not random, not unimportant, but a true and meaningful endeavor. Thank you to you and our partner for all the gifts and hard work that leads to the beauty you shared. I will admit that my heart swelled at the brief view of the lilac buds. The temps in Illinois are below zero so that moment was greatly appreciated. I do enjoy your videos but my brain feels like it's running a marathon to keep up with your reflections at the end of each video. Ah, it's ok. It's good for us!

Thank you for your closing reflection. The marriage of philosophy, theology and science living in harmony. There is a quote from an early Star Trek episode: "Intelligence does not require bulk." Part of the purpose for being created is to co-create and to wonder. I think less thinking and more observation helps with both.

"Stolzes Grasfrosch-Elternteil"... Thank you so very much for the compiling of these wonderful videos. Seeing you work physically on the land as you do opens up pathways in me of my connection to Life/Tao/God. The huge benefits of physical labour, to ‘play’ on the land, to create such abundance I find incredibly inspiring. Please do, when time allows continue with these beauty filled videos of your life. 💜🙏💜

That's a very useful tip about SolaWrap thanks. I need to repair my small home made greenhouse but have been put off by not wanting to use material that would end up in landfill in a few years.

Thank you for sharing with me the vastness and the minuscule of your world. To hear the birdsong, the rain, the wind is at once exhilarating and calming. To see the earth slumbering and reawakening is humbling and profound. Your closing reflection (or sermon) is thought provoking, challenging and so wonderfully basic. In the end, to me, the story of the tiny creature called man is truly meaningful only to that man who tells the story, for each of us has only our personal lens through which to perceive that in which we exist. It is the miracle of being human when a story of another resonates within me and forms a connection. And when that connection is such that the emotion of love results, oh, what an unsurpassed joy that is.

Thank you for this lovely film. I really enjoy seeing you build things and interspersing that with amazing views of the surroundings. you bring moments of peace and serenity with a realization that beauty is important to everybody. Your afterthoughts are interesting and definitely food for the mind.

High-quality content. You can tell that Johannes is as much a craftman in building his chapel, in starting a new pond or in making this awesome video series. Thank you.

Thank you for your videos, I particularly appreciate your reflections at the end. I’m not a religious man, but I do think there is much to be learned from religion.

Really enjoyed seeing the pond and construction of the green house. I live on a hill and this is very inspiring as to what I can do with it. Very nicely paced video. Thank you.

This episode is a sheer delight. Thank you again for identifying flora and fauna (especially the proud parent frog). And as always, thank you for your thoughts at the conclusion, that will tickle my thoughts to wonder as well.

Herzlichen Dank

Such a great channel. You have broadened my horizons in so many ways, I am so intrigued in the walipini. We just bought 70 acres and I feel I need to build one. I have never seen an electric wood chipped, that’s so neat. I was going to buy a gas one next year,,,,but now I need to see if I can find one 8n Canada. Thank you Johannes, great content. 🇨🇦🌷
