A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 platformer arcade port for the NES, Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong Jr. does not have an ending, so I played until I got a game over on Round 7, board 4.
Donkey Kong Jr. might not have end up in quite as emblematic of a classic of a bygone era as his father did, but he wasn't too far off, either. As you'd expect from a title with Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi headlining the production credits, DK Jr. is a thoroughly enjoyable action title in the vein of Popeye or Mario Bros. for anyone that can appreciate the old-school, pattern recognition based gameplay that propelled Nintendo into the arcade big leagues in the early 80s.
It contains all of the original arcade stages, and was one of the few NES titles two receive two different NA releases - one as a "black box" standalone title, and the other as half of the Donkey Kong Classics package released in 1988.
It was also only of the three Japanese Famicom launch titles back in the summer of 1983, appearing on shelves alongside Donkey Kong and Popeye.

Donkey Kong Jr. is one of the granddaddies of the NES library as a 1983 Famicom-launch title, and while it's not quite as potent as the original DK was, it's still a damn fine port of an early 80s arcade classic.

I think DK Jr. Is a better game than the original, at least on the NES. It's a much harder game. If you can get to level 6, you are a great player. The sounds on this game are better too.

For the Coleco Adam: has full version, and is in the same tone as the arcade version (C minor), but until the last notes the tune is one octave higher. ColecoVision and Adam: Board 1 (Vines): pitched one half-tone lower than arcade version (from E-flat major to D major), but the end-of-level jingle is in the exact same tone and pitch as the arcade version (B flat major) Board 2 (Springboard): CV cartridge port uses same end-of-level jingle as board 1, but for Adam the original end-of-level jingle is kept but is pitched down three tones (from B flat major to G major) Board 3 (Hideout) (Adam only): Original end-of-level jingle is replaced by something else entirely. Board 4 (Chains): main level theme same tone/pitch as arcade version, as is the end-of-level jingle (the CV cartridge release is shorter, just like the NES port) Time Running Out: same tone as the arcade release (B flat major) but is pitched down one octave. The tempo for the BGM for boards 1 and 4, and also the end-of-level jingle, is at a slower BPM of 130, compared to the original's 150. The victory jingle keeps the original 150 BPM tempo.

In the U.S. arcade release, it was stage 2's music in the 3rd level cycle and, as you said, stage 3's from the 4th level cycle on. Cycle 1: Vines, Chains Cycle 2: Vines, Springboard, Chains Cycle 3: Vines, Hideout, Chains Cycle 4+: Vines, Springboard, Hideout, Chains

You could glitch this game into oblivion with an imperfect cartridge insert. Whacky music, strange start locations, hilarious "wrong sprite" stuff. I once glitched it to where it started me sitting on the goal line, which instantly triggered a level complete. I sat and watched for a while, my "best game ever" until one stage where it dumped me into the water every time.

Paid way less for the DK compilation on NES over the original black box versions, which sell for far too much. I wanted both games, well that is how I got them several years back.

Plot is the same as the arcade version. There are a few programming changes to make it work for a NES such as shortened cutscenes.

You got over 222000 points. Then I think I can do 100000. Levels 1 and 2 are so frustrating, though... 1 is very boring, having to wait for the Snapjaws to get onto the right vines to be able to kill them, and the beginning of 2 is ridiculous, with the spring. Edit: I see that you choose to skip the spring! I might do that too, then, to reduce frustration. Well, you don't skip the spring, of course, but I mean you don't get onto the platform with it. Edit 2: I see you also don't bother killing the Snapjaws on level 1. I am going to follow your example, it will make it a lot more fun, hopefully. :)
