Arcade Game: Donkey Kong Junior (1982 Nintendo)

A classic platform/run n jump game sequel to nintendo's all-time classic arcade game where Mario now cast as the villain (the only Mario game in which this occurred) and Donkey Kong the captured victim.
Donkey Kong's son, DK Junior, must rescue his captured father from Mario's clutches by climbing and jumping his way over vines, chains and platforms before he can reach his father. Junior has to race against time while avoiding the horrible Snap Jaws, Nitpickers, and Sparks released by Mario.
Like the original, Donkey Kong Junior features 4 different stages, but in the US version, one or both of the middle stages are omitted in the first 3 levels. In the Japanese versions, all 4 stages are played in their logical order.
Note: Both version were played. Japanese version - no cheats were used. The US version - cheats were used which starts at 8:51. The US version was longer and harder than the Japanese version. The game is pretty much endless. I killed myself afterwards.

The ONLY game Mario was bad. So ironic how they reversed the role from the first game. Seeing DK in a cage reminds me when he was captured in Donkey Kong Country 2. This here is the Japanese version, by the way.

Miyamoto wasn’t that much aware about what type of characters both Mario and Donkey Kong were going to be, that is until his games that feature Luigi became famous and of course when Rareware gave Donkey Kong a makeover.

My dad had the arcade game in our upstairs apartment when I was in a pretty tumultuous time of my life. I played the shit out of this game and only today just learned what game it was I was playing. I was about 5 or 6 I guess, I never made it past the second level with the spring

If you hold two vines, you climb up faster but down slower. If you hold one vine, you climb up slower but down faster. That’s subtly strategic. I prefer Junior to the original. There’s more nuanced scoring and gameplay for something so simple. I like how it does something completely different. The board is more fun. Mr Miyamoto’s young ambition still holds up.

Yes, I also prefer this to the original DK, and I LOVE the original. It really is a genius sequel to DK and takes me back to fun times in the arcade in my local mall, Barrel of Fun. Im hoping Nintendo will release a home cabinet ala Arcade 1Up or maybe Nintendo will work out a deal, but won't hold my breath, with A1Up to license it. It would be a HUGE seller, Im sure! The resurgence in retro home arcade sales is hard to ignore these days. You listening, Nintendo?!?!!

the kill screen in this game happens the same way the original does, where the timer becomes too short at a certain level, due to an integer overflow or something, and you can't pass the level. It happens on the first stage of level 22, or, according to the level indicator, level F, after 9 blank boxes. wrap your heads around that!

The only true good guy in this game is Donkey Kong Jr. Mario started out as a good guy in the original game but saved his reputation starting with Mario Bros. And later, Donkey Kong became good starting with Donkey Kong Country.

I remember the cut scene to Mario's hideout in the US during the 80's. Also, the version on this video has been hacked. This one starts out with 6 lives. The single vine upward movement has been sped up. As previously reported he is able to go through traps while sliding down vines.

This version has the screens in a different order then the US Nintendo version. The difficulty level is also easier in this version. This version has springs on the second level, the Nintendo version has "keys" on the second level. We called this version the "JR" version. While the US Nintendo version always read "Junior"

It was the same way with the original Donkey Kong. You had to be really good to get to the Pie Factory in the US version of Donkey Kong. In Japan the stages just went 1-2-3-4. In US I believe it went 1-4-1-2-4-1-2-3-4

That's because those other stages don't show up on the first run in the US version. They're there, but you have to beat the last stage, Keys, multiple times, because a new stage is added each round as long as you don't die. The same thing happened with Donkey Kong in the US.

@@megamoze The clone version read "Donkey Kong Jr." on the cabinet, while the Nintendo version read "Donkey Kong Junior" The "Jr" version was easier and I could get higher scores. I was the local champ at all my corner stores in the early 80's!

My five year old beat this game within ten minutes of being introduced to it. He had a bit of a harder time with the first Donkey Kong though. Hell, when I was a kid I thought DK Jr. was a lot easier than DK.
