In the first game Donkey Kong is a baddie but in this Super Mario is the baddie and I know why, Mario was angry at Donkey Kong for kidnapping Princess Peach so he kidnapped Donkey Kong.

Actually it was Pauline DK kidnapped. And apparently back then DK was Mario's pet.
