When Donkey Kong was released in the arcades, Universal Studios filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Nintendo of America. Universal Studios claimed that the storyline of Donkey Kong infringed on the same storyline as King Kong. The basic story of a gorilla capturing a woman and taking her to the top of a building. At the time Nintendo of America was a relatively small company and Universal Studios knew this and thought the lawsuit was a slamdunk win. When the lawsuit was filed, anything related to DK was forced to cease production. This included production of the cabinets, the Saturday morning cartoon was pulled, stragety books, etc. Well, NOA's lawyer, John Kirby, made the discovery that Universal's copyright of King Kong expired in the late 70s. Obviously, when this information was presented in court, NOA won the lawsuit and it cost Universal big time. Regarding the lawyer, John Kirby, NOA decided to show him gratitude for what he did by naming a new character after him. You know who I am talking about. That pink puffball that likes to inhale things like a vacuum cleaner. As soon as it was shrinkwrapped, Mr. Kirby was presented with the very first copy of Kirby's Adventure for the NES. To end this story, just think where NOA would be today if it were not for Mr. Kirby making that discovery. The characters, DK and Kirby, would not even exist. Meaning all of the excellent games starring these two beloved characters would have never been enjoyed by millions worldwide.

Amazing how much talent the people who did these "homebrew" games did to coax this much from 30-40 year old hardware that had lesser games running on them then.
