"The 8-bit title I'm reviewing next..." I wonder what that's going to be, inferior controls or otherwise. We shall stay tuned! Ah, the Donkey Kong Land trilogy ends on a moderately decent note. Not the best. Not bad. It's just another solid entry in the brilliant DKC series. I continue to be amazed at Rare's standards of consistency and attention to detail throughout the era. Boy do I miss the 90s. And yes, Kiddy Kong is a goofy character for sure, but the adorable big ape baby was never a problem with me, personally, either. I mean, Donkey Kong is just inherently goofy anyways, it's a series about monkeys fighting crocodiles. Kiddy doesn't look so out of place, although the absence of Donkey Kong himself, the series namesake, is indeed somewhat baffling in hindsight. I guess Rare just wanted to experiment a bit with the sequels, making them feel like spinoffs, in that way. But I say it's time to put this monkey business to rest. I always look forward to future reviews from one of the most honest and informative game review channels on KZbin.

I think what puts Land 3 and Land 1 above Land 2, is that Land 2 was more of a port of DKC2 (just rearranged layouts in each stage). But for Land 3, in addition to unique layouts, every stage is new, every world is new. We have new maps, new names, new order to stage types. Sure it still borrows heavily from DKC3 just as DKL2 did from DKC2, but it doesn't feel like a watered down port of the SNES game this time around, it feels more like its own thing. And for that, it gets more points in my book, and many others as well.

I absolutely ADORE Donkey Kong Land 3. Like the Super NES DKC3, it is one of my favorite games of all time. It plays so much better than DKL2, and the sound effects do not mute any other audio channels like they did in DKL2. Don't get me wrong. I love DKL2 as well, but I would rather play DKLIII than some of the newer DKC games released today. I even have the Japanese GBC cart of it, as well as the original yellow cart upon its release in 1997.

17:18 Weird how the OST talk wasn't that long. There's 2 versions per song in these stages. The 1st version plays when you play a stage AFTER loading a save file, or start a new game. The 2nd version will always play after that. Difference is usually at what point does the song start. However, that doesn't apply to songs like Big Boss Blues, where the difference between version 1 and 2 is the tempo. 1 is faster than 2, and 2 is slower than 1. I also noticed that most of these 8 bit songs were updated. As in, they have stuff that their SNES counterparts don't have. Nuts and Bolts, for example, has some extra melodies, and thanks to the new stuff (the bass' intro section), it feels less repetitive than the SNES version. There's more, Big Boss Blues has a intro and after loop intro that weren't present in the SNES game at all, making the song feel less repetitive, etc. Good review. Maybe the best for the game, but the OST part could have been more detailed if you ask me.

The DKL games and Killer Instinct on the Game Boy is honestly some of Rare's finest work. It's absolutely incredible how they managed to not only condense console games several times their size on the scrappy Game Boy, but also made them incredibly playable and fantastic. As an aside, I much prefer Kiddy Kong over DK in the DKC and DKL games as his small body and comparatively larger arms make platforming easier and he feels more weighty than Diddy who can at times feel quite slippery. If you want to see how good a Game Boy transition from consoles can really be, you should play the Game Boy version of Killer Instinct. You'd be impressed

DKL introduced some new backgrounds and gameplay elements (tornados, balloons and such). DKL2 was a straight-forward shoving the SNES game onto GB. DKL3 falls in-between: It duplicates the source material at a glance but little things matter - the new layouts make you rethink navigating the area and having the stages in a different order makes it feel different even if it really isn't. And the card game is cool. So this game is really good and doesn't suffer from the feeling of apathy that hammered DKL2.

@ragnell88854 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I didn't mind the treasure hunting segments (despite its glaring aforementioned luck issues) compared to most people, but Mad Space is easily the worst level in SA2 imo. The level is straight-up broken physics-wise and controls-wise. I still love SA2 and is still one of my all-time favorite games ever, but nostalgia can't blind me to the games flaws, especially in terms of how it has aged poorly in some areas.

Having played land 1 and 2, when I dropped a couple bucks to snag it off eshop for 3ds with the leftover from a different game I wasn't expecting to get into it. It is exceedingly good. The level reworks, new stage names, platforming, input response, all fantastic. I do miss using kiddy rolls to water bounce and speed through enemy lines, but it was a fun experience when I didn't need to be an animal buddy. Some levels do feel a little sparse, but having beat snes 3 a few dozen times, that's honestly true to game and I feel is exacerbated by needing to blank out the background layers for ease of visual reading.

I can't overstate my appreciation for your content! One question remains: Maybe I didn't listen close enough, but how do you save in this game? If I remember correctly, in DKL1 you could save after collecting the KONG letters, in DKL2 after certain levels. What about DKL3?
@implantgames4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lee! The saving in DKLIII is the same as DKL2, except you don't need two coins to save, it is always free. It suffers the same problem as most of the series, where a player can get stuck having to beat 3+ levels before getting the opportunity to save again. However, as the game is generally a lot easier, I never had any moments where this became an issue.

The enemies look like green army men and the purple and pink palettes are really strange. They clearly could have chosen more suitable palettes for the enemies because it wasn't a technical limitation, they just look like holiday candy. lol. The Super Game Boy files and assets were removed from this version and i have no idea why the game was released in japan as a CGB only version. Maybe Nintendo requested it from Rare for some obscure reason. The difficulty in this version is way more forgiving than the SNES counterpart by a longshot. The lightning stages in the SNEs game are almost impossible.

Despite feeling a little more barebones compared to it's console version or even DKL 2, I do feel this game is more balanced than DKL 2. It just has a better flow to it and combines a little bit of old and new. It is easier as you say but on Gameboy that's not really a bad thing. Once again the music is great and Eveline Fischer(Novakovic) did a great job porting it over to the handheld. Just like DKL 2 though there is an un-used track hidden in the game which was meant for a Rocket Run level.

Going straight from DKL2 to 3 one of the things that I noticed was that Engarde felt a bit less forgiving and flimsy in his attack and hit detection which I felt worked really well in the last game. I might remember this wrong but I think he would always auto-attack most enemies you made contact with while this sometimes would result in taking damage in DKL3. Kinda silly why this excellent Color version was never released in the West or translated for the 3DS' eShop release :/

When it comes to Kiddy Kong, I often felt as long as the game is designed well the design of him being a baby never really bothered me. Would the Arcade versions of Donkey Kong suffered when Donkey Kong Junior was released back in 1982? I often took that position that as long as the game is designed well, all that would suffer would be the first impressions of a game which I think it the most middle ground argument I could say.

DKL3 is a quite hard and i would say it's pretty much on par with DKL2. DKL1 is barely playable in that regard. You're missing a huge key point that on the original gameboy screen with it's barely visible visuals and shadowing it's very hard to play. Not only has he contributed nothing worthwhile in the entirety of his character's existence... but he features some of the WORST character design I've ever seen. Black and red fur? Tribal tattoos? Jet boots? A gun?! Shadow looks like he was designed to singularly appeal to 6th graders who ate their own boogers and found wrestling to be cool. He's a wholly unpleasant character whether in design, implementation or personality. Kiddy's just that-- a kid. At least they've had the decency to not shoehorn him into nearly every Donkey Kong title, unlike a certain other character.
