DISCO was a double edged sword for Donna. She was crowned the Queen of DISCO and I feel because of that she wasn’t taken seriously by some. However, her talent is undeniable! People are still amazed by her voice. She truly is one of the greatest of all time.

Great opening remarks on Donna's talent. Truly the best cover of this song. Next to Streisand only Donna Summer could catch the spirit of this song. I honestly don't think there is another singer that has the ability to sing so many genres of music and Donna has the Grammy's to prove it. She is the only singer to have Grammy awards in 5 different categories of music from Rock to Dance.

This song is from the Barbra Streisand film "Yentl". Barbra Streisand was supposed to sing this on the Oscar show because it was nominated for best song. She was unable or unavailable, and she personally asked Donna Summer to sing the song for her because she knew it was the only person who could do it justice, and boy was she right. There is nothing Donna Summer could not sing. She is so underrated and underecognized. It's a sin.

Actually Barbra was in Europe promoting the international release of Yentl. Her first directorial effort. She never had any plans to sing this song on the Oscars, especially after not being nominated in any major categories including best director.

@@jareddavidhirsh4948 That could be true. Maybe she told them she was Illl? That's what everyone said at the time.

@@jareddavidhirsh4948 Barbra was scheduled to perform the song at the ceremony, both this song and The Way He Makes Me Feel were nominated. Jennifer Holiday was selected to perform the later. Barbra came down with the flu (although she was notorious for having stage fright, so their were some who thought that was the real reason she couldn't perform). Donna and Barbra were friends, and Donna got the call the day before the show from Barbra asking her to step in, so had little time to prepare with the band.

Donna Summer was in a word..AMAZING!!! Could sing any genre of music so well!! As Dick Clark once stated...'The most underapreciated female vocalist I've ever met'. She had it all. Beauty. Talent. Grace. And a voice that was out of this world. It's too bad she kinda got pigeonholed into the Disco Queen status and wasn't fully appreciated for the breadth of her talent. That's the industry for ya'. But for those who dig deeper like you and I, she was indeed the personification of BLACK EXCELLENCE!!! Thank you for recognizing this, and her.

The late great Donna Summer. My own favourite by her is a duet with my favourite male voice, the great Contemporary Christian singer Matthew Ward. Love Has A Mind Of Its Own, from 1983. There's no video, but there are several postings of the audio track on KZbin. Check it out...

Not generally known but Donna Summer began her career in Germany, and predominantly in the gay clubs. In fact I met her at a concert of hers on New Years 1975 at a massive WW2 aircraft hangar just outside Nuremberg. There were over a thousand of us there at that concert and she was amazing. Then her career took off at the gay nightclubs in London where I lived. She only became huge in the US after “we” had already discovered her! True 😊

By the way, Barbra had actually asked Donna to sing the song. She also asked Jennifer Holliday to sing the other song nominated called, The Way He Makes Me Feel, and if you have not reacted to it, might I suggest you do because Jennifer "sang that song"...

honestly you should have first check Barbra's original version written by the incredible michel legrand (oscar winner for best music that year).. taylo rmade for her voice and her jewish roots and relating to her father early death, that takes a all different aspect.. donna summer voice is amazing and made a great tribute to the song.. but in your journey of discovering Babs Yentl is an absolute must .. the movie the album the story... Wish i could be like you and hear Barbra achievment for the fisrt time all over again

Hello. I am not sure if you have already reacted to Donna Summer’s song, dim all the lights. It is one of my favorites and I would appreciate it if you reacted to it. The best video version of it I think is an earlier performance in her career where she is wearing a purple gown. Thank you.

No, Barbra was not supposed to sing this that night. She was in Europe promoting Yentl's release there. I'm sure she was glad NOT to be there. A) She doesn't like singing in public (B) She was snubbed by the Academy. No major noms for Yentl. She had the last laugh anyway. Yentl made (in today's dollars) $140 million which was a (again, in today's $$) a $100 million profit. The critics mostly LOVED Yentl.

The fact that the movie was so profitable after Barbra had to struggle to get it made because the powerful folks in Hollywood thought nobody would watch it makes me so happy. It proved all the studios and naysayers wrong and was yet another proof that Barbra is a genius! Call me petty but I live for it haha

Treat yourself to the MacArthur Park Suite - the DJ 12" Single, rather than the album version. Not to boast, but I have remixed it slightly to extend Heaven Knows in a way that does not detract from the original. Or, stick to the released version - but mind, One Of A Kind is shorter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmrco5qZbamEaNU

You're comparing a recording, to a last minute live performance. Barbra called Donna the day before the Awards went to air, and asked her friend to fill in for her... LOL
