Yamaha. Went from a JT2-MX right to a DT-1 250, at 14 YO. That was a great Saturday. The seller knew the exhaust was clogged and bought new pipes but then lost interest. He included a new(er) stock pipe (which I used when I got old enough to register the bike) and an expansion chamber. That was a great Saturday (for me, NOT my neighbors). The pipe on it was totally clogged. I was about 110 lbs. It was 1975. I put the chamber on first. Oh, how loud. And I was about flappin' in the Wind! I know. Nothing like a YZ250. Brass bar is always good for throttle, clutch and brake cables. If you’re making a new nipple in brass, chamfer the hole on both sides. The entry side allows for some movement in the cable without chafing and wearing. The chamfer on the other side allows for the cable end to be mushroomed out to get a better grip when soldered. The advantage is that brass is a better material for soldering to than steel. Also, all the classic bike cables had brass nipples. Thank you for sharing
@ProleDaddy10 ай бұрын
The melting point of bass is massively higher than lead and hard to achieve for most folks.
@randywl89255 ай бұрын
@@ProleDaddy I believe he was talking about using round brass stock with a hole drilled through it as the cable end. A large chamfer on one side of the hole would allow mushrooming the cable end before soldering. This would eliminate the need for the bolt and making a mold. I think that's what he was describing, but not sure.

I've had a similar home-made tool for at least 50 years - a gift from an old motorcycle mechanic and racer who went back to the the 1920s - he showed me his technique which included leaving the cable end a bit frayed rather than cutting it clean, but there are clearly merits to doing it either way. .

The whole system is based the same principal as the throttle cable. The part I received from ebay was the wrong bloody length of cable - apparently for a different version of my car (probably for one made on a Tuesday while the seagulls were flying inland but against a westerly wind …) - the only thing that was holding me back was how to make the securing lug - I was planning on using KNEEDIT but having seen your video I've realised that I can use that same principal to make up my own cable with some bicycle brake cable. Double-whammy! Thanks, Donn :)

I used those little lead dinners for fishing where you just crimp them onto the fishing line. Then put additional lead solder on for strength. That was on my cable for a self propelled lawnmower. Still working 3 years later. So I should be able to do something similar to my Harley so I can get it to the shop as both cables are old and need replaced. Thanks for jogging my memory. I love your mold. I've made brass ends and soldered them on but I'll try this. Some thoughts; I like to tin the cable before I cut it. This keeps it from unraveling, but you can still smash the very end open. Use tinning fluid (acid) when soldering steel to ensure adhesion. Be careful not to overheat the cable. If it gets to red heat it will destroy the temper and make the cable brittle.

The end broke off on my Seat Ibiza door handle cable during the first lock down last year which meant i couldn't open the door from the inside and couldn't get a new cable, so i found a strip of 6 amp terminal blocks, cut off one section, cut off the plastic insulating material leaving just the metal part. I threaded the cable through the inner door handle and put that onto the end of the cable. I pushed it onto the cable so i could tighten up both screws onto the cable. It works so well i haven't bothered buying a new cable

I wouldn't trust in lead- it might be too soft. Have you tried aluminium?
@randomeddie1858 жыл бұрын
i would try some sort of zinc die-casting alloy. i think that's what the factory uses.

i used terracotta..just jokin. some jb weld would be much batter.
@jusb10667 жыл бұрын
can use a bit of brass rod, you can use it in a drill with a file if you havea bit too large, drill a hole, and a countersink, put in cable, splay open so it lays in the countersink, solder with flux and as strong as factory
@Oldbmwr100rs7 жыл бұрын
Use silver based jeweler's solder and flux, very strong.
@Oldbmwr100rs7 жыл бұрын
Maybe that "aluminum weld" zinc based rod you can get at hardware stores. This is a good idea mentioning zinc.

GREAT SOLUTION!! I have no idea why this has so many dislikes, imo the only people to dislike this are the people who don’t have the mechanical know how to heat flux hahahah A++ for the tips, so many ways to accomplish this bit this is one of the cleanest solder ends I’ve seen with a homemade jig

+Donn DIY Try acid core solder for the clutch cable. Once acid core solder cools is becomes hard like steel.
@habiks8 жыл бұрын
acid core solder?.. you mean solder with flux core? it has the same general hardness as any other solder without the flux core. The flux is there to clean the surface when soldering.
@michaeldion87988 жыл бұрын
No I mean acid core. It's for repairing rads.
@habiks8 жыл бұрын
a link maybe? coz searchin for it only brings up rosin core (aka flux aka acid) solder
