I don't know if you picked up on it but this is being sung by a ghost named Cathy. She is asking her lover to let her into his bedroom window. She wrote this over a weekend because she thought her first album needed a hit single. The record company thought she was nut's and fought her but she won. The single came out and shot straight to #1 in UK and Europe. I think she was 19. And thats her on piano too.

That's correct, sung in one single take!

She sings in this strained pitch to emphasise she is playing a ghost who has come back to haunt her lover. She does have a very soft feminine voice but she has excellent range and was a pioneers in the way she used it to create different moods.

I guess it's not her on piano here but it is on the record.

She's just having a good time with her voice and range. It's the upper range of her soprano voice here and she has put a ghostly effect to it. It's more a type of theatrical performance vocally whereby she is inhabiting the character. That character being Cathy's ghost from the book Wuthering Heights. So, while other artists might use their voice to emote only. She is using her voice to inhabit a character and emote. Most female voices are soprano, mezzo, and alto. So, yes she's mostly using her soprano voice here. Most all females have feminine voices. Going lower than alto is an anomaly. Yet, there are some who can venture into that tenor range. You might hear females using vocal distortion in that kind of demon voice prevalent with some metal rock groups.

Not her typical vocals....she's playing a character. Don't sleep on Kate Bush. She's like a Joni Mitchell, Sade, Enya, --- just her own thing/sound/evolution/control throughout their careers.

Let's not forget, she's opened the path for female solo artists that came later. Artists like Adele (just one example) wouldn't be a thing without this effort...
